• Social group usually very
intelligent, sensible but extremely
unpopular.
• Usually made fun of and bullied.
• Poor dress sense, usually including high
pants, briefcase, glasses.
• Popular in American films and TV
programmes.
• Typically socially inept
• Enjoy more academic activities and
often are out of touch with other
people.
3. Jocks
• Usually represented as a group of male
athletes often playing basketball or
football in American films and TV shows.
• Very popular in schools especially with
girls, other social groups are intimidated
by them.
• Characteristics include being
handsome, muscular, aggressive, woma
niser, homophobic, attractive girlfriend.
• Main jock is usually the captain of their
particular sports team.
4. Bully
• Can sometimes be the jock who
doubles up as the bully.
• Often with a large group who are
scared to speak out and go
against him (usually male).
• Often has background problems
such as family issues, poor home
life.
• Insecure and short tempered.
• Disregard for school rules and
uniform.
5. Popular Girl
• Often very attractive.
• Rules the school.
• Everyone wants to be her friend.
• High opinion of herself.
• Often involved in activities such as
cheerleading, sports teams, drama.
• A lot of the time has high profile
boyfriend.
• Blond hair seems to be common trait as
all characters playing the most popular
girl in school seem to be blond.
6. Goth
• Very distinct social group
• Many subgroups: Mosher, EMO
e.c.t.
• Often frowned upon by others
who think they’re strange and
weird.
• Dress scruffily and wear bags very
low.
• Often have long messy hair.
• Specific taste in music and fond of
the colour black.
7. Rebel
• Seen as a bad boy and a trouble maker
• Often ultra macho and likes big group
of friends
• Usually very high up in social ladder.
• Rebel is seen as Indie and very cool.
• Dresses in stylish clothes
• Sometimes seen smoking
• Gets into trouble/Lots of detentions.
8. Cronies
• In the background of other much more main characters –
Part of their “Crew”
• Can be male or female following their leader.
• Often will back up their leader and become very loyal
• Make their leader more intimidating as they have back-up
• E.g.:
• Members of sports team may follow lead Jock.
• Friends of Popular Girl will seek her attention.
9. Misfits
• Don't fit into any social group.
• Often very mismatched people who don’t really excel at
anything.
• Low down in social pecking order
• Often Ignored group of people on T.V and Film due to them
being a weak group compared to Jocks, geeks and bullies.
• This was until the phenomenal success of “The Inbetweeners”
in which the entire show was dedicated to this group.
• Glee is also quite similar in the fact it deals with people with a
poor social standard.
