2. Information/language
Conan’s Youtube profile picture is
there on the screen at the end for
you to click on and view his
account. There are also links to his
newest music video and other
videos related to his genre of
songs.
At the bottom of the screen is the
record label he is signed with, and
the recording studio used.
3. Narrative
The storyline follows Conan (a barista), observing the
customers that come into his café. In the first verse,
narrating in lyrics their story. The first couple are
students (or met when they were) and are potentially
engaged. He seems intrigued by them, but also slightly
spiteful out of jealousy. In the chorus, he admits he
hasn’t ever had a real love, which explains why he is
singing about other people’s relationships. Then at the
end everyone is staring at him, like the roles are
reversed.
4. Camera shots/angles
Two shot: this is used at the end
and is the first proper
interaction Conan has with
another person in the video. The
use of this shot helps set in the
reality, which is that he can't live
through other people and that she
expects him to be working.
Dolly-zoom: the use of the dolly
zoom in this scene helps to convey a
dissociative feeling, which is
emphasised by the slow-mo effect and
smoke in the background. Whilst
everyone else is panicking because of
the smoke/fire, Conan remains still.
This reflects the lyrics and build up in
the bridge of the song.
Tracking shot: this shot is at the
beginning of the video and
establishes right away who the
focus of the video is. It helps
establish the scene to the viewer
and allows them to immerse
themselves into the video and
relate to the character.
5. Mise-en-scene
The main costume in the video is
the barista uniform. The apron is
a dull colour which adds to
mundane the job is. Being a
barista means you work with
customers all day, and with that
comes a lot of people watching
(title of the song).
There is only really one main
location in the music video, the
coffee shop, however he does go
outside the building for a few
scenes. The outside of the café,
provides a space where Conan
can be by himself and not have
to see all the happy couples that
enter the shop.
The coffee shop is typical of
what you would expect and has
relatively neutral tones
(wood/brown, white and cream).
The various plants that decorate
it are what add the colour and
make the place look pleasing to
the eye. A coffee shop is a
very typical place for dates, so
as we see in the video, would be
a humbling place to work for
him.
6. Lighting The lighting In this clip is a yellowy green and plays at
the beginning of the video. Its visually quite murky
and created a moody tone, right off the bat, which
reflects the pettiness of the lyrics. Although yellow
typically has positive connotations, it also can convey
negative ones such as anxiety because it can be quite
an overwhelming colour. This feeling links to the
theme of living your life through other people and
being scared you're not going to experience it yourself.
The lighting in this scene is quite
prominent throughout the video. Its
high-key, white lighting and It provides
a good establishing environment for
the video to take place. The lighting
creates grey tones and gives a
melancholy atmosphere.
7. Colouring
Throughout the video are mostly
neutral/nude tones, so the colour
of the tiling marries up with that
well. It keeps a consistent theme
to the video, whilst also adding a
bit more saturation.
The yellowy brown of the tea that’s splashed on the
floor not only represents the café setting, but adds
a new colour to the video.
