2. The colour scheme that is chosen for my brand identity and products is
especially important, and there are many factors that have to be
considered when deciding on the choices, including:
I have carefully considered each of these areas when coming up with my
colour scheme. I already have decided that I will not be having too many
choices, as the mood of Twenty One Pilots can be quite dark and ominous,
and I don’t feel that having a wide range of colour choices is necessary
because of this.
-The target audience
-The specific genre the music is categorized under
-Already existing products/releases from the band
-The mood of the chosen track
3. Target Audience
I am aiming to create a product that will appeal to people who are around a
similar age to me, and more specifically, who fall under the age range of about
14-21. I decided this based on the fact I am very familiar with this age group,
and most of the people who I either know as acquaintances or friends, are
between this age range. As well as this specific age range, I would also like my
products to appeal to former fans of the band Twenty One Pilots, as it is one of
their tracks I will be creating a video and ancillary texts around.
I have decided to quiz people I know who are fans of the band, to work out
factors that I need to potentially include in order for my work to appeal to them.
I have also focused on myself, and certain things that I like. I thought of six
questions to ask each person, in an effort to hopefully find out what I needed to
know that would benefit my creation process and ultimately, help me come up
with my colour palette.
4. I asked fans of the band the six following questions, and the next few slides
show the answers I received from the fan, as well as a photograph of
themselves:
1) How long have you liked the band?
2) What is your favourite album and why?
3) What colours would you associate with the band based on their released
material?
4) What would you say is most iconic, or the first thing that comes into your
head when you hear the words ‘Twenty one Pilots’?
5) In your opinion, what kind of mood or tone would you say the band give off
through their music?

would you say the band give off through their
music? – A sort of cheery tone even though the
lyrics are about quite negative things??
6) What music genre would you rank Twenty one
Pilots as? – I really don’t know wow
Fan – Britney (Age 15)
10. 1)How long have you liked the band? I've been a fan for round about 3
years; since Vessel came out
2)What is your favourite album and why? Even though I love them all, I
would say that Vessel beats the others by a small amount. I would say that
Vessel is my favourite because it has more of my favourite songs on that
aren't repeated on other albums such as Screen and Semi-Automatic.
3)What colours would you associate with the band based on their released
material? I would associate the colours red and blue for most of their albums
and red and black for the most recent release.
4)What would you say is most iconic, or the first thing that comes into your
head when you hear the words ‘Twenty one Pilots’? I would say it's the fact
there are only two people yet they still manage to create a wide variety of
music and provoke such a broad response from an large audience that
bands of four and five+ struggle to do, as how they manage to captivate and
entertain a whole crowd easily with only two people- one of which is almost
always behind the drums.
5)In your opinion, what kind of mood or tone would you say the band give off
through their music? In my opinion twenty one pilots do have quite a large
amount of pretty sad songs, but quite a lot of them have happy beats and
quite amazing subliminal messages. They do however also have some
happy, empowering, sassy and generally cheery songs.
6)What music genre would you rank Twenty one Pilots as? I would say that
twenty one pilots are in their own section of alternative music, not because
they sound like other 'alternative' bands, simply because they don't fit into a
single category and they can be classed as an 'alternative option' of other
genres. Since they have bits and pieces of pretty much every genre from
classical piano, to somewhat reggae beats up to the heavy vocals of
hardcore bands, if it was possible I wouldn't have them genre'd at all really,
unless it was a self-titled genre.
Fan – Ely (Age 16)
11. Fan – Grace (Age 15) 1) How long have you liked the band? – I've liked the band for just over 2
years, a few months after vessel was released
2) What is your favourite album and why? – My favourite album is probably
self titled because the whole idea and concept of the album is just mind
blowing and I can really relate to that album specifically but regional at
best is tied as its like a trial run of vessel and I really like the idea that it's
a rough sketch?? And I really love the sound of regional at best as well
but if I had to pick one it would be self titled
3) What colours would you associate with the band based on their released
material?– Mainly monochromatic colours with red because of
blurryface
4) What would you say is most iconic, or the first thing that comes into your
head when you hear the words ‘Twenty one Pilots’? – When I hear
twenty one pilots the first thing is see is Josh and Tyler's makeup for
blurryface (red eyes and black paint on neck and hands)
5) In your opinion, what kind of mood or tone would you say the band give
off through their music? – The overall mood which they give off would
definitely be upbeat and happy, you could play most of their songs at a
party and it still be enjoyable but you can also listen to them with
headphones and really enjoy the music yourself by actually listening to
the music
6) What music genre would you rank Twenty one Pilots as? - I'd say they
were more indie rock?? But not rock as they're quite pop as well, they've
changed the music scene drastically so it's hard to say what they'd come
under as they fit into so many genres but mainly indie rock? Idk
12. Fan – Hannah (Age 18) 1)How long have you liked the band? - Just under
two years
2)What is your favourite album and why? -
Vessel/Self titled, both just such good all round
albums, prefer the style to the newer more
electronic style.
3)What colours would you associate with the
band based on their released material? - Green
from self titled, red with newer stuff. Greys as
well.
4)What would you say is most iconic, or the first
thing that comes into your head when you hear
the words ‘Twenty one Pilots’? - Probably my
favourite songs - fall away and can't help falling in
love cover, ukulele playing in the car
5)In your opinion, what kind of mood or tone
would you say the band give off through their
music? sad/reminiscent
6)What music genre would you rank Twenty one
Pilots as? - Legit no idea
13. Genre of Twenty One Pilots
This was a very hard judgement to make. However, based on how I heard of them and who
they associate with, I have collectively decided that Twenty One Pilots fall under the ‘Rock’
category. I haven’t quite pin pointed an exact sub genre, but I would definitely say that they
are a Rock band.
Connotations/associations with Rock music -
Like every genre, typical presumptions are made towards people who prefer a certain style of music, and with Rock, the
standard stereotypes include:
- Black clothing, and lots of it
- Eye liner
- Not very many friends
- Alcohol and drugs
- Depression/Mental Illness
- Mosh Pits
- Heavy guitar/bass/drum work
- Loads of tours/shows
- The devil
- Screaming
- Skeletons/skulls
- Death
- Merchandise
- Detailed artwork
- Metal chains, spikes, platform shoes
- Black ripped skinny jeans
- Piercings
- Tattoos
- Converse/vans
- Skateboarding
15. Mood of the chosen track
Implicit Demand for Proof
As I have not yet came to the conclusion on the track I will be using for my final video, I have
explored my three choices that I currently have:
A Car, A Torch, A Death Addict with a Pen
I feel that the lyrics are very faith
related, and I get that Tyler is
agitated because not everybody
believes in the same person that
he does. The musicality provides
the track with quite a peaceful and
calming tone at the beginning, and
it gradually builds up and
intensifies. For this reason, I would
associate pastel colours like lilac,
peach, light pink and mint with this
track, as well as darker colours
such as purple and red, to portray
jealousy and anger/frustration.
This track is very different to implicit
based on the mood and tone given
off by the music. Both lyrically and
musically, I find this track soul
destroying. For this reason, I mainly
associate black and white with this
track, as they both contrast each
other, and are the typical shades that
are related with feeling sad and
down. I would also associate the
colour blue with this track, linking in
with the sadness factor, as well as
the colour red, as I sense fear in the
lyrics.
Whenever I think of this track, the
line ‘my trial was filed as a crazy
suicidal head case’ comes to mind
straight away, and this is why I
associate the colours black and white
also with this choice. There is also
reference to water often in the lyrics,
and this links in the colour blue, as
well as sand colour, as sand is also
mentioned. I feel that the track is
very sinister and emotional, which
explains the limited colour palette.
The title ‘addict with a pen’ also
brings me to associate red with the
track.
16. Conclusion
Based on the fact I have not yet decided on my final track, I can’t confirm my colour scheme.
However, I have collated three palettes based on each track, and these are:
Implicit Demand
for Proof
A Car, A Torch,
A Death
Addict with a
Pen
