Why are parents afraid of vaccines?
3. Possible allergic reaction/adverse drug reaction
Too many vaccines at once can overload a child’s
immune system
What are the actual risks of vaccines?
4. Since the early 1900s, vaccines have prevented 40
million cases of diphtheria, 35 million cases of measles,
and 103 million cases of childhood diseases. In today’s
world, according to the World Health Organization, 2.5
million deaths are prevented each year because of
vaccines. With emerging technology, new vaccines are
now being implemented to prevent not only
communicable diseases, but also non-communicable
diseases such as cancer (HPV vaccine can prevent
cervical cancer) (Rappuoli, 2014).
Benefits of Vaccines
5. From a study on the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, it
was concluded that there was a 21% reduction in
invasive pneumococcal disease in the total population,
with a 71% reduction in children under age two. This
study even discovered that there was a nearly 30%
reduction of the disease in non-vaccinated people
because the people who had been vaccinated were no
longer a risk to those who had not been (Harboe, 2014).
More Evidence for Vaccine Benefits
6. Because of the Vaccines for Children program, first
implemented in 1994, that allowed for
uninsured/underprivileged children to be vaccinated, it
is estimated that among children born from 1994-2013,
322 million illnesses will be prevented, 21 million
hospitalizations will be prevented, 732,000 deaths will
be prevented, and there will be a net savings of $295
billion in direct costs and $1.38 trillion in total societal
costs (Whitney, 2014).
