I love public relations. Creative, challenging and holistic 40%
in its approach, PR gets to have its hand in every cookie
jar. Some cookie jars I’ve recently had my hands in:
Helped craft a communications campaign for Guild Wars 2 that spanned across
influencer outreach, traditional media pitches, Reddit AMAs and TwitchTV.
Resulted in more 1 million beta sign-ups in 50 hours and hitting more than
2 million units sold within two weeks of launch.
Re-launched D&D brand, catapulting it to No. 4 spot on Amazon’s
overall best-seller list and back into my list of weekly hobbies.
Launch of PlayStation Home with more than 200 million impressions
from top-tier national and international press.

17. FAQ
Where did you go to school?
I received a BA in Journalism (with a PR focus) and a minor in Graphic Design from Humboldt State University in
northern California.
Who have you worked for?
Most recently, NCsoft for the launch of Guild Wars 2. Previously, I worked at the PR agency Porter
Novelli with clients like PlayStation, Dungeons & Dragons, Hewlett-Packard and others. Before that I did
eight years of computer drafting (the expensive software I mentioned earlier).
Where have you traveled?
In order: Mexico, Morocco, Spain, South Korea, England and Germany.
What’s with your name Emil?
It’s a variation of Emilio. It’s pronounced /Em-eel/. It means “eager” or “laborious” depending on the Latin translation.
Although fairly popular in the United States prior to the 1920s, its usage has plummeted since. It remains very popular
outside the US.
What was your first communications success?
In high school, while working as a computer drafting technician, I created a set of blueprints detailing how to have a
happy holiday. Our company sent it to a few friends as a holiday card, and we were soon getting phone calls from
across the country and from London. It was my first “viral” marketing success, before I knew what that meant.
