Cooperative Learning in Kindergarten
POINTS OF DISCUSSION:
A. Description
Children are gregarious in nature. They love
to be with others and have fun. Their attention
span also is very short. For learning to take
place effectively, they have to be placed in an
environment where they can act naturally and
move freely. With this in mind, Cooperative
Learning came into being.
A. Description
Cooperative learning is a successful teaching
strategy in which small teams, each with
students of different levels of ability, use a
variety of learning activities to improve their
understanding of a particular subject or a
lesson.
A. Description
Cooperative learning differs from traditional
teaching approaches because learners work
together rather than compete with each other
individually.
A. Description
Each member of a team is responsible not only
for learning what is taught but also helping
team mates learn, thus creating an atmosphere
of achievement, students work through the
assignment until all group members
successfully understand and complete the task.
Cooperative Learning in the class
Cooperative Learning
is a way of teaching
pupils in a cooperative
way. Learning and doing
things in a small group.
This is applicable in
teaching all learning
areas.
B. Benefits of Cooperative Learning
1. Teach students
how to work with
others.
B. Benefits of Cooperative Learning
2. Facilitate social
interaction among
students.
B. Benefits of Cooperative Learning
3. Motivate
Students
B. Benefits of Cooperative Learning
4. Improve students’
self esteem and
attitudes towards
school.
B. Benefits of Cooperative Learning
5. Teach students how to learn a
variety of ways.
C. Basic Elements of Cooperative
Learning:
1. Individual Accountability
All students are expected to master the
material presented to them in a lesson. This ensures
that the learning of each group member is
maximized through group interaction, as individuals
are accountable for learning the materials and
helping other members to learn it also.
C. Basic Elements of Cooperative
Learning:
2. Positive Interdependence
Students must perceive that they are positively
interdependent with the other members of the small
group.
C. Basic Elements of Cooperative
Learning:
3. Use of Interpersonal and Small
Group Skills
It is essential that interpersonal and small
group skills be taught when necessary so that the
group can function effectively.
C. Basic Elements of Cooperative
Learning:
4. Processing
Time and procedures must be set in place so
that students can determine how well the group is
functioning in terms of assisting individuals to learn.
D. Group Rules
1. Every member of the group must
make a serious effort to do the
assigned task.
D. Group Rules
2. No member dominates or
withdraws from the group.
D. Group Rules
3. Each member participates in the
discussion or problem solving
process.
D. Group Rules
4. Each member displays a positive
and encouraging attitude towards
every other group
members.
D. Group Rules
5. A member who disagrees with an
answer or suggestion defends their
point of view by giving specific
reasons based on personal
knowledge and experience.
D. Group Rules
6. If roles are assigned by the
teacher or leader, then all group
members will attempt to carry out
their role until a satisfactory
solution is reached.
E. The Teacher’s Role in Cooperative
Learning
1. Clearly specify the academic and
cooperative objectives for the
lesson/activity.
E. The Teacher’s Role in Cooperative
Learning
2. Make decisions about placing
students in learning group prior to
lesson/activity taking place.
E. The Teacher’s Role in Cooperative
Learning
3. Clearly explain the task and goal
structure to the students.
E. The Teacher’s Role in Cooperative
Learning
4. Monitor the effectiveness of the
group and provide assistance or to
increase students
interpersonal/group skills.
E. The Teacher’s Role in Cooperative
Learning
5. Evaluate the students’ achievement and
help the students evaluate themselves as
cooperative learners by focusing on:
the quality and quantity of students’ learning.
how well the group functioned.
F. Summary of Roles that could be
assigned to Group Members

Editor's Notes

  1. Good and blessed afternoon everyone attending this 3-day division seminar in kindergarten and sped! Special thanks to our ever supportive leaders, SDS Dr. Wilfreda D. Bongalos, our ASDS Dr. Cartesa M. Perico also to our CID Chief Dr. Oliver M. Tuburan and SGOD Chief Dr. Reynolds Velos and to our ever dynamic EPS In Kindergarten Maam Imelda G. Naveo thank you for this opportunity to once again sharpen our skills in teaching and molding our young kids at school as we continue to nurture them with the new normal ways of teaching.
  2. Attention span in every kindergarten learner is limited thus this is the perfect time to help teachers aide the new normal teaching strategies that are age-appropriate and enjoyable, catching their attention.
  3. Most of you might be searching for this particular topic now in google, right…When we are asked about How will this Cooperative Teaching works inside each Kindergarten classrooms, would anyone asked can share some ways?
  4. As we go along the discussion with this particular topic, we will appreciate the importance and benefits of a particular teaching strategy which is Cooperative Learning.
  5. The beauty of being kids and learning is all natural, since we were under a certain pandemic for almost 3 years now, we teachers were struggling to find ways on how we can be of help to the teach.ing and learning process for these little learners we have (Kinder and SPED) right? The best way we can,the best way our department can
  6. Take a closer look at this picture, can anyone share a thought about this?
  7. Later part of this particular topic we will be making an accommodation plan tailored fit to our kinder and sped learners.
  8. In addition to the cooperative learning description
  9. Lets all look closely to the pictures presented here, do we have any idea or thoughts about this? How would you include cooperative learning in your classroom?
  10. You may ask, how is cooperative learning used in Kindergarten? Kindergartners practice their communication skills in many ways (in their MTB like in Binisaya or Tagalog ,or English) harmonious interactions or not so with peer groups, the teacher ask a question and kids are into group and they represent different responses
  11. See how happy they are doing some task in cooperative way
  12. The teacher knows based on her assessment/ prior knowledge on her learner’s profile so as what to incorporate (Cooperative Learning Strategy) for a particular topic, and block of time when inside the class.
  13. Teachers will always be reminding the classroom rules so as to work well and harmoniously with peer groups, right?
  14. Surely kids social interaction will be confident enough with they associate and work in cooperation with classmates to get things/task done
  15. Kindergarten learners, needs good motivation much more than graders, now comes the role of a teacher to stimulate constructive interactions between learners
  16. Youll be surprised soon, they will be friendly as you think
  17. Being resourceful comes from a very young age if a child is taught to become one by parents or teacher, this is the right opportunity to them
  19. Here are some of the examples of CL that you can choose and know about
  20. Group efforts matters the most, to accomplish a given task like “ Dayunganay Game” so ,there must be a rule that tells every member to cooperate well to win
  21. Walay hawod2, walay daug-dauganay as they say..
  22. Tabang tanan to solve and discuss
  23. Encourage kids to be such kay importante kaau ang positive attitude towards other kids among peer groups
  24. And if they disagree, they will surely have their reasons about it, that is why it is very important to share their knowledge and personal experience with other kids for the other kids to learn from them also
  25. Group efforts matters, everyone is having their roles assigned and they carry it out ,guided by the classroom teacher
  26. The Teacher must be clear of her objectives in each activity she or he would want to do when teaching cooperative learning and it should be based to his/her assessment in class or student’s performance so as to give focus to a particular activity and fully achieve the output needed
  27. Place groups according to how a teacher may see a good result like heterogeneous groupings so kids can openly share each ideas when doing cooperative learning task
  28. After all, teamwork is the best way around
  29. Site the task on what is it all about like if they will be doing puzzle tell them the goal that it has time limit and it has an outcome or result leading to what the teacher is telling or giving instruction with
  30. Always monitor learners in each group in a given activity
  31. See for the result if learners or students achieved it and how each group performed
  32. Here are the list of the summary of roles that could help a teacher
