3. OUTLINE SYNOPSIS
Boy named Felix at bus stop, waiting for bus to take him to work, usual day,
usual crowd at the bus stop.
He looks around and sees everyone on their phones, he is only one who
isn’t.
He gets on the bus and goes on with his day.
Next day, walking to the bus stop everyone around him is on their phones, a
women trips and drops her stuff, everyone else walks past and doesn’t even
notice, bar him he steps in and helps (this is used to gain a likable status for
the main character)
He continues on his way to the bus stop, he looks and sees the same faces
again, sits down and waits with a huff of disappointment.
He looks up and sees a beautiful girl, a new face at the bus stop, she is on
her phone also, and he sighs again.
Next day gets to the bus stop and sees the girl again, he sees she has a
name badge with her name on it, remembers the name and goes on his way,
when he gets home he goes on his phone, adds her and tires to pop up, he
hasn’t got a profile like the rest, posing and what not but he still adds her
and messages her saying hey. He sits eagerly waiting for a reply. Many
hours pass yet still no reply, he checks his phone and see’s she has read
and ignored, he is sad.
4. OUTLINE SYNOPSIS
next day he goes again to the stop, she of course is sitting there staring
down at her screen, he looks and sighs once again, sits down next to her
and doesn’t get noticed, later that night he throws away his phone,
frustrated with what it has done.
Next day begins the same as any other walking to the bus stop looking at
the world while everyone to glued to their phone, he sits once again in the
same stop, surrounded by the same people doing the same things, yet this
time someone stands out, a girl who too is looking at the world, he smiles
with glee and continues his day.
Next day at the same stop, the girl on her phone sits next to him, he sums
up courage and attempts to speak to her, she looks up blankly, puts her
headphones in and walks away, he is devastated, he stays at the stop and
puts his head in his hands, when without him realising the girl without a
phone sits next to him, she looks at him, confused on why he is so sad yet
realises he doesn’t have a phone, she taps him on the shoulder and says
“hey, are you okay?” he looks up and realises who it is, shocked by the
moment of communication he gets nervous and stutters nonsense, she
laughs, so does he, he introduces himself, so does she, the camera now
starts to slowly zoom further and further away while music plays over the
dialogue, the dialogue is not needed but the expressions show them
laughing and having conversation, that is all that is needed to express the
message.
Black screen….. LOOK UP.
5. MARKET FIT
How does your film fit within it’s market/genre?
Consider your research and justify your position
Through research into similar products I found that my short film fits
into the drama genre, I delved further into the genre and found that the
message movie subgenre is exactly what kind of short film genre I am
going to make. Message movies are a subgenre of melodrama that aims
to teach a lesson, be it moral, political or social. Often these films play
to the lowest emotional common denominator, reducing complex issues
like racism, sexism, sexuality, war, poverty, insanity, abuse and
addiction into simplistic plot conventions and clichés. In relation to my
film in this subgenre, I will be making a film that expresses a message
and aims to teach a lessons, in my film issues will be express upon the
current age of technology and how it is effecting our social lives with
other people, specifically smartphones and how they are disconnecting
us from the real world. I will also be featuring a love interest in my short
so the film can also go under the genre of romance however it is not the
key theme expressed my film although it is a big part of the narrative
and will be the end result of the main characters character arc as we
see him develop from a lonely young male to someone who finds
happiness with another.
6. RIP-O-MATIC
Create a 15-25 second rip-o-matic trailer for your film from
existing footage/sound/photos
This should provide a look and feel for the film
7. CHARACTERS
Details on characters, their motivations, backstory, etc.
Felix (main character) – Felix is a young male aged 19, he has left
education and now works full time in an office. He lives with just his
single mum as his father left when he was young. Felix has never
known true love and finds it one of his biggest goals to find the right
person to be happy with. He isn’t like most of the people his age as he
doesn’t have any social media accounts and hardly uses his phone like
most, he is disappointed with his generation and how technology has
changed how people treat each other, he is a strong believer in treating
everyone as equals and that polite acts go along way, however he feels
that he is left out short when he conduct kind acts for strangers and
doesn’t receive any back. He feels that he is at the age now where he
wants to find love as he hasn’t ever truly known it.
Girl 1 – a pretty girl who knows it, doesn’t have much empathy for
others and is obsessed with her own self and her social media site
along with her phone.
Girl 2 – nice girl who cares for others, is in love with the beauty of the
world, the outdoors and nature, isn’t like most her age either, doesn’t
own a phone.
8. TARGET AUDIENCE
Who is you film aimed at? You could summarise your research and
use this to justify your choice of audience. How does you film
fit/target this audience?
Age – 16-24
gender neutral however the main character will be male so this could attract a
more male audience due to have relatable traits.
The main focus of my target audience will be smartphone users so this relates to a
large audience as smartphone are one of the biggest sellers in technology as to
date so my short will cover a large audience coverage. My film will also feature
aspects from the romance drama genre and the more specific subgenre of drama,
message movies. These genre tags attract a certain type of audience, romance
dramas attract an age range of around 13-50 year olds and most romantic movies
will preference towards a more female audiences as stereotypes suggest.
However this doesn’t mean that a male audience will be attracted to film as the
film focuses mainly around the subgenre of movie message, which intrigue both
genders neutrally as it expresses important issues on current affairs which effects
both male and female equally.
9. LOCATIONS
Details on proposed shooting locations and images from recces and research. For extra detail explain
how you intend to use the environment, where are you going to put the camera, consider time fo day
for shooting and practical considerations [is it busy? Do you need to book it? Are there any legal
restrictions/permissions to consider?].
This is where I plan to film the majority of my short film, it is a bus
station in Ripon where I am from. I like this place for my film
because it has seats as to where the characters can sit, there is
enough space to set up cameras to get the best shots possible
both close up and long shot. The bus station can be busy
depending on the time, if I chose to film on a school day mid week
in the morning the station would be at its least busy so filming
would be ideal. I have ideas of including both close ups and long
shots in this location, establishing long shots to set the scene and
then close ups for when I want to express the characters actions
and his emotions. Most of my film will take place here so as to use
my time effectively I will plan a date and time for everyone to meet,
have a shot list and strong idea of what shots need doing and an
added bonus is if any filming is incomplete or missing it is only a 5
minute walk from my house so accessing it is easy. The other
locations featured in my film will be my own home and also one
scene on the street, for this I plan to use the street jus outside my
house, the road is busy which helps to create the realism of an
actual street location.
Here is a back up location for the bus stop
scenes, for if filming at the bus station is not
a possibility then this place is only round the
corner and is much less busy.
10. RESOURCES
What resources do you need/intend to use for you
production? How do you intend to obtain these
Most of the resources I will be needing will be filming
equipment, this includes a tripod to ensure stable shots, a
camera with SD card and battery, possibly a SteadiCam and a
microphone for recording any dialogue. To obtain these
items I can go on to the York College website, go on to
Blackboard and select the booking hire page, select what
equipment I need, what day I need it, how long for and what
day I will be returning. Other resources I will be needing,
clothes/outfits, it is important that I plan the outfits of my
characters so they correctly reflect the type of character I am
going for. Props may also be needed in the filming process,
as of yet I am ensure whether I will be needing any however if
I do then depending on the prop I can either obtain them from
my own belongings or at home, if not then I can easily
purchase what I need online or in a shop.
11. CREW
REQUIREMENTS
Details on requirements for production team and any specific
skills needed. Who are you going to use?
I will be playing most of the roles as crew in the production
of my short film. The direction of the film will be done by me,
this means I will be instructing my cast, informing them on
my vision and what I want from them. I will also be operating
the camera so that my vision is correctly formatted through
the use of a lens, the angle and shot types will be decided
and executed by myself. After the filming process is
completed I will then conduct the editing process of my short
film, this means I will be uploading the footage to my college
Mac and running the Premiere Pro software to complete the
final aspects of my film.
12. CAST REQUIREMENTS
Who are going to play the characters in your film? Explain
you decisions, how have you overcome issues with getting
them? Do you have a backup?
My film will consist of 3 characters in total, one main
character called Felix who I plan to use my fellow student
Harvey to play as I can rely on him to turn up on time and be
ready to film with a professional attitude. For the other 2
female characters I will be using my 2 sisters to play the
roles. I am doing so because I can rely on them, I know that
they are up to the task because I have asked them to play
roles in pervious work which work effectively, they both also
live close to me so travel to film is not an issue. I have
planned back up with other friends to play roles if anyone
cannot make it.
13. BUDGET
A breakdown of how much intend to spend making the film, this should consider travel,
consumables, equipment booking, fees, etc. Your total should also have a 10% contingency for
problems, etc. Your main currency for equipment from college and facilities [green screen, lighting,
studio, etc] is our cryptocurrency [G-Units?].

15. SCHEDULE
You have a rough schedule already in place due to the college calendar. How
do you intend to use this time? How are you going to keep track of this?
