INITIAL IDEAS -
QUESTIONNAIRE AND
FEEDBACK
A2 Media Studies
PARTICIPANTS
I had four participants in my survey, aged 17-18, all of which were
female. Although this age range is slightly younger than the age of
our target audience, they would still make up a large proportion of
our audience, so I believed it to be ok to question them. Our target
audience is 18-25as we believed they would be more mature and able
to understand the relevant intimacy and therefore have a wider
interest in the film, than those of a younger age. Millie and I thought
it would also be appropriate to question only females due the target
audience being predominantly female.
QUESTION 1
Which genre, out of the three we have, are you most
likely to enjoy?
Film Genre
Horror Chick Flick Social Realism
Unsurprisingly the Social Realism
genre was the least popular,
however I believe this is due to a
lack of knowledge in what it is
and this is proven in the follow up
questions. Horror and Chick Flick
had equal amounts of votes.
QUESTION 2
Out of our three initial ideas which is your
favourite?
Horror Chick Flick Socail Realism
Again, unfortunately Social
Realism wasn’t chosen, however
I in the follow up questions half
stated they didn’t know what it
was. Horror and Chick Flick were
again joint.
QUESTION 3
Why do you favour this
idea/genre?
Response 1 (Chick Flick) = Its funny and typical. The genre makes you feel good, you also
don’t have to concentrate too much, so it’s easy to watch.
Response 2 (Chick Flick) = Makes me happy when I watch them, and I can relate to this
genre because I’m a female.
Response 3 (Horror) = It would keep me watching. Its seems jumping and I like things that
catch me off guard.
Response 4 (Horror) = I like to be scared and this seems scary, the suspense waiting for
her to appear would be great.
The reasoning behind all these decision is very
predictable. Chick Flicks are almost comforting
to watch due to the fact, as stated below, they
require little attention. The response for Horror
was also unsurprising as the plot had a good plot
twist which would excite the audience, just like
Horror watchers like.
QUESTION 4
Why didn’t you like the Social Realism
genre?
Response 1 (Chick Flick) = I don’t know what Social Realism is?
Response 2 (Chick Flick) = Because its to similar to real life, and I like to have more of a
fantasy.
Response 3 (Horror) = I also don’t know what Social Realism is?
Response 4 (Horror) = I just generally prefer Horrors.
QUESTION 5
What would you change about the Social Realism
plot line?
Response 1 (Chick Flick) = Maybe make the two main characters males, this might be
more intriguing to an audience.
Response 2 (Chick Flick) = I would need something more exciting to happen.
Response 3 (Horror) = I like to relate to films, so maybe a more typical storyline?
Response 4 (Horror) = Have more of an engaging storyline.
It was a shame that Social Realism wasn’t a
favourite of any of my participants, however
we managed to gain an insight to what we
could improve on in order to make it more
appealing. As well as considering these ideas
we have to remember that this age wasn’t
specifically our target audience, so we
shouldn’t be disheartened as our target
audience may feel differently.
