Intel was established in 1972 and was a market leader in DRAM chips, but lost some market share to competitors in 2010. In 2018, Intel explored expanding beyond semiconductors into artificial intelligence (AI) as new industry trends like Industry 4.0, smart manufacturing, and interconnected devices emerged. Intel saw opportunities to enable and accelerate AI development in manufacturing, healthcare, agriculture, and other industries by developing AI use cases and technology like its Neural Network Processor to improve AI performance by 100 times. However, implementing large-scale AI presented challenges around data insights, record keeping, equipment complexity, food safety, and more that Intel aimed to address through its AI focus.
