1. Utopiamania in Hollywood
The first teaser of Thomas Morus has been published tonight. After last year's Utopia
we are getting the first glimpse of another movie based on Thomas Morus'
masterpiece Utopia.
Thomas Morus is going to be a political thriller about building up the system of Utopia
in modern times. The main character, Thomas Morus, is a politician with a vision and
he is doing anything to realise his goals. Director Peter Dental promises excitement
simular to House of Cards. After his work on season 5 of the successfull series the
chance is high that the expectation for this movie are met.
Acadamy award winner Harry Lonpos said to IGN:
" It was a pleasure to work on this project. Peter (Dental) knows exactly what he's
doing. With his different and new approach he breathes new life into the genre.
(...)Working on the set was quite fun. Me and John Bumprick were interested in the
mythology of Utopia before."
With a budget of just $3 mio the movie had some production issues. The filming
ended one month later than expected and in that way got some negative press.
Utopia, the movie of last summer, could convince neither spectators nor critics. The
reasons for the bad rating were a lack of story, which was adressed neither to
children nor to adults, and bad special and visual effects. Apart from the title Utopia,
there was no common ground with the famous renaissance novel written by Thomas
Morus. In the movie Utopia was one big city with a glass dome over it. In the book
there are many more cities.
Most of the storylines were rather confusing than intelligent. Main example is the
"drone scene". At this scene the main character, Jerry, is surprised by a military
drone. The drone is trying to "exterminate" him, but is failing. At the end of the movie,
Jerry is hanging under the dron, which ascends into the sky.
The movies Utopia and Thomas Morus have some similarities. Both movies are
about Utopia and the story is settled in our modern time. Thomas Morus is more
about the creating and the politics of Utopia, and in Utopia we found criticism about a
new kind of slavery in our time.
In the offical synopsis of Thomas Morus the problems of building up Utopia in modern
time is mentioned:
"What does the perfect state need? That's the question for buisnessman Thomas Morus. He is
ready to do anything to create his vision of Utopia. And he is not afraid off breaking the law."
If the film is a must watch or a letdown you can decide on November 5th 2017.
