Roland Barthes
Roland Barthes was a French literary theorist; he explored a diverse range of
fields, and he influenced the development of schools of theory.
Barthes suggested there will be more than one of five codes that describe the
meaning of a text.
The Enigma code, Action code, Semantic code, Symbolic code and
Referential code.
3. z
SYMBOLIC CODES
Symbolic codes include the language, dress or actions of characters, or iconic
symbols that are easily understood.
For example......
The Heart symbol represents love and romance.
The small green cross represents health, a pharmacy or a hospital
4. z
SEMANTIC CODES
The semantic code points to any element in a text that suggests a particular,
often additional meaning by way of connotation.
For example...
James bond wears tuxedos and drinks martinis to connote his sophistication.
The train to Hogwarts departs from Platform 9 ¾ connotating the world of magic
Harry Potter enters .

ENIGMA CODES
An enigma code is a mystery within a text that is not immediately
answered or an editing technique in which that camera shows only some
of the narrative, leaving the audience with a sense of mystery as to where
the narrative will go next.
For example....
A murder mystery will not reveal the murderer.

PROAIRETIC CODES
Action codes are actions in the narrative that tip off the viewer about what to
expect as the narrative progresses.
Actions early in an episode often foreshadows what's to come.
For example, a loud noise happening in a horror film.
7. z
REFERENTIAL CODE
The Referential code indicates anything in the text which refers to an external
body of knowledge such as scientific, historical and cultural knowledge. It also
relies on the audience having existing knowledge.
For example..... smoke could indicate a fire or a film set in New York would
use well known landmarks.
