4. • On December 1, 1955, 42-year
old Rosa Parks boarded bus
2857 in Montgomery, Alabama.
• She was told to give up her seat
to a white man. She refused
and was arrested for violating a
racial segregation law.
• Her act of civil disobedience
started a 13-month boycott of
the Montgomery bus system .
The boycott was led by Martin
Luther King, Jr.
• African Americans walked, rode
bicycles and shared cars instead
of riding city buses.
