3. Types of child abuse
• Psychological maltreatment
Psychological abuse, often called emotional abuse, is a form of abuse, characterized
by a person subjecting or exposing another person to behavior that may result in
psychological trauma, including anxiety, chronic depression, or post-traumatic stress
disorder.
• Physical abuse
Physical abuse is any intentional act causing injury or trauma to another person or animal by
way of bodily contact.
• Sexual abuse
Child sexual abuse, also called child molestation, is a form of child abuse in which an
adult or older adolescent uses a child for sexual stimulation.
5. Justice for child abuse
The legal system was originally put into place in order to identify children who had
been abused or severely neglected by their parents or caretakers, remove those
children at risk of future abuse or neglect and place them in protective custody, and
bring perpetrators of child abuse and criminal neglect before the bar of justice
