3. Ancient Greeks would use solar
energy to keep their homes warm.
They would design them in such a
way so the sunlight could enter
the house from all sides. During
winter seasons the house would
be kept fairly warm by the
sunbeams.

5. In ancient civilizations the sun had
also been used to determine time.
The solar clock was the first one
to be built and with its help, time
could be determined. Time would
be estimated based on a shadow
of an indicator, called
“gnomonas”.

8. The ancient Egyptian Pharaohs,
solar heated their palaces by
capturing solar energy in black
pools of water by day and draining
the hot water into pipes in the
floor of the palaces at night. This
kind of architecture heated homes
at night while keeping the
temperature low during the day.

to use glass windows to trap the
warmth of the sun in their homes.
They were so serious about the
preservation of this solar energy
that they erected glass houses to
create the right conditions to grow
plants and seeds.
11. The sun and the Greek mythology.
It was believed that the
sun was a god.
According to Greek
mythology, Sun with his
chariot and 4 white horses
would traverse the dome of the sky from the East
scattering the light and when he would sink into the West
darkness would follow.
12. One myth says that Rhodes
was one of Poseidon’s
daughters and the spouse of
Sun.
Colossus of Rhodes is
dedicated to the latter. Its a
statue with bronze skin that
reflects the sun rays and
stands 32 meters long.
Its intimidating posture and
massive frame make it
impressive to the visitors,

Sun was used in war activities too. Archimedes set the
Roman navy on fire with the use of reflectors made of
glass, which gathered the sun rays and directed them
towards the ships.
