Pyramids

  1. 1.  Ancient Egyptians constructed pyramids to serve as tombs forkings and queens. The pyramids at Giza, Egypt, are some of the best- known monuments in the world. Their massive size and simple shape fascinate people.
  2. 2.  Some of the pharaohs had pyramidsconstructed for them when they die and go to the afterlife. A pyramid was anenormous stone tomb. Building a pyramid was a huge project. Thousands of people worked for many years to build one. The stones that are to build the pyramid are made of mud from the Nile and some of the stone blocks that make up thepyramids weigh more than two elephants!
  3. 3.  Pyramids were tombs built only for royalty and other high-ranking people.The ancient Egyptians believed that thespirits of dead people could live on only if their bodies survived. So theypreserved dead bodies by making them into mummies. The ancient Egyptians buried the mummies carefully inside pyramids.
  4. 4. Ancient people in the America and the Middle East also builtpyramids. But the largest and bestknown were constructed in Egyptmore than 3,500 years ago. Around 100 pyramids still stand on the west bank of the Nile river.
  5. 5. Many treasures were buried with royal mummies. The ancient Egyptians believed that all of the items a personused in life would also be needed afterdeath. They buried thousands of items with pharaohs and other importantpeople. These items were made of the richest materials, such as gold and jewels. Some mummies even had coffins made from solid gold!
  6. 6. Pyramids were holy places, where spirits passed into the afterlife.Hieroglyphs were carved inside to guide each spirit on its journey. Priests made offerings at nearby temples to help the spirits.
  7. 7.  Building a pyramid was an huge project. The largest, the GreatPyramid of King Khufu, measured an amazing 147 meters high!
  8. 8. How did the Ancient Egyptians get the bigstone blocks up to the top of the pyramids?They built ramps up the sides of thepyramids, they destroyed them when thepyramid was finished.The pyramid is made from over 2 millionblocks of stone.Each stone weighs between 2 and 15 tons.
