3. Introduction
Castor Oil Ethoxylates are most widely used as non-ionic detergent.
Obtained by reacting castor oil with ethylene oxide.
German firm BASF prepared it in the name "Cremophor EL" by responding 35 moles of
ethylene oxide with 1 mole of castor oil.
Supply is over 50,000 tonnes each year.
Cremophor EL vehicle is used in administration of potential medications particularly
Miconazole, Paclitaxel, Sand immune, Teniposide as well as Digoxin.
5. Synthesis
1. Laboratory Synthesis of Ethoxylates5
A 1-litre four necked flask, fitted with a water cooled stirrer, condenser, thermometer and
gas-dispersion thimble is connected two 500 ml safety bottles to a graduate containing white
oil and a manifold connected to low-pressure nitrogen and a tank of ethylene oxide.
A weighed amount of Castor oil is charged to the flask followed by 0.1-0.2% alkaline catalyst
such as sodium hydroxide.
A slow stream of nitrogen is started through the castor oil and the temperature raised to
150-160 ℃ by means of a glass insulated heating mantle.
For trial purposes between 8.5 and 10 moles of ethylene oxide per mole of castor oil is
suitable.

7. 2. Continuous Process for Synthesis of Ethoxylates
A measured amount of material to be reacted with ethylene oxide by RP
programming system together with the catalyst is fed into the process unit.
The operation is carried out in very short period of time.
Reaction temperature is 170-240 ℃ & Pressure is 5 to 10 MPa.
Catalyst is 0.1 to 1.5% by weight of castor oil.
Low residual moisture is essential.
8. An automatic control system regulates the flow of ethylene oxide in relation to
the temperature of the reaction mixture.
The end product is cooled down by the cooling system and by the optional
additional cooling vessel.
No bleaching of the end product is required.
