DIGITAL GALLERY “WALK”

2. WHAT IS THE INDUSTRIALIZATION?
• A change in the way things are made- instead of things made
by hand at home, they are made by MACHINES in factories.
• When this change in production is widespread across the
country, it also drastically changes the way people live- know
as INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION.
• Discussion: What do you know about the Industrial Revolution?

4. TRANSPORTATION
• During the Early part of
industrialization, Americans saw the
start of railroads, trains, and
steamboats. By the end of the 19th
century, cars started becoming
prominent.
• Trains changed the way Americans
viewed space and time.
• Discussion: How far away are we
from Disneyland? (“5 min. away vs 5
miles away”).
• Trains also caused a need for the
creation of “Time Zones”. Americans

6. CITY PLANNING
• With more and more Americans
moving away from small farms, cities
became larger and more complicated.
• Discuss: Why would Americans want
to move into cities? What are the
benefits? Negatives?
• With more people moving into cities,
Americans began to see more stores
open up and sell a wide variety of
goods (made possible thanks to
manufacturing).

8. FACTORIES & MANUFACTURING
• Before industrialization, making
items, such as chairs, took a lot of
time and skill. Once machines are
involved, the amount of time and skill
needed drastically decreases.
• Working conditions in factories were
harsh. No central heat/air and 14
hour work days.
• Items are now made in identical
fashion. Invention of removable parts
also makes repairing these new goods
cheaper.

10. LABOR UNIONS
• In order to protest for healthier
working conditions, better
wages, and shorter work days,
workers formed unions to
combat factory owners as a
united group.
• Strikes and protests were often
dangerous. The police always
sided with the companies and
attacked union demonstrators.
• Discuss: How do early unions’
demands compare to demands
of today’s workforce?

12. CHILD LABOR
• One of the biggest negative effects of
industrialization is child labor.
• The need for cheap workers led many
companies and factory owner to turn
to hiring children.
• Children were payed roughly 25% the
wages of an adult man (women
received about 50% the wages of
men).
• Discuss: Can you imagine if you were
working in a factory instead of being

13. IDEAS TO KEEP IN MIND!
• In the last 15 years, your life-time, there has been more
technological development than the entirety of time before you
were born!
• Inventions, such as steam power and telegrams, allowed
Americans to become more connected across the entire
country.
• Despite a lot of positive changes that emerged our of the
Industrial Revolution, there were also a lot of negative effects.
• Keep these two phrases in mind, “positive changes” and
“negative effects” of inventions/technology
