Rizal Being a Novelist
• As we all know, Jose Rizal is known in many aspects. One of the talents that made him famous
not just to the Filipinos but even with the enemies was him being the novelist. His Noli Me
Tangere (Social Cancer) and even the sequel novel El Filibusterismo (The Reign of the Greed)
had tremendous effects to the people of 19th century.
• These two novels criticized and exposed the social life of that time included the abuses of the
friars and the government officials in the Philippines. These two works of fiction are now
considered two of the greatest social documents of all times. Maybe to some of you, you feel
bored as we go along with this chapter because you have taken this as one of your subjects in
high school. But this time, let us try to focus on the important characters and who or what are
they representing in real life in the society especially during the 19th century.
Dr. Jose Rizal
Rizal wrote the novels not just for enterta
but for noble purpose of redeeming the Filipinos
from their miserable condition.
He had two objectives in mind as he wrote them.
1. to expose the social malady affecting our country.
2. to awaken and develop the national consciousness
the people. It is no doubt why, Jose Rizal is consid
as the Father of Nationalism.
The Dedication of the Novel
Rizal dedicated his novel entitled “Noli Me Tangere” to his
fatherland. Rizal sacrificed his personal needs in order for him
to make a difference for our country. He made the novel to
expose all the doings of the Spaniards in order to reawaken our
senses.
He was inspired by “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” to write about the inequ
in Filipino society. With a Latin title (“Touch Me Not”) that allude
passage in the Bible, the work, published in 1887, explores the
oppression of the local people by priests and the government du
the era of Spanish colonization.
The Dedication of the Novel
Jose Rizal wrote the first sections of his novel Noli Me
Tangere in 1884 in Madrid, Spain when he was still
studying medicine. Rizal drew his inspiration in writing No
Me Tangere from a book entitled Uncle Tom’s Cabin which
was authored by Harriet Beacher Stowe.
Noli was originally written in Spanish, so the likelihood th
Spanish authorities would read it first was very high;which
is what Rizal wanted to happen. This led to his decision to
write the sequel of Noli Me Tangere, the El filibusterismo.
The plot of the Novel
Noli Me Tangere, a book by José Rizal that was written in Spanish and released in 1887, was very important to the
political development of the Philippines. Rizal provided a devastating analysis of a society under Spanish colonial
power by drawing on personal experience, novelistic patterns from the nineteenth century, and ideals of European
liberty.
After spending seven years in Europe, Crisostomo Ibarra, the mixed-race heir to a powerful clan, returns home with
plans to improve the situation of his fellow people. While attempting changes, he is met with an oppressive religious
hierarchy and a governmental administration in Spain that is both brutal and apathetic. Through story events, the
book implies that significant change in this situation is extremely difficult, if not impossible.
Ibarra is excommunicated for assaulting the parish priest because Don Rafael, his father, passed away just before
he returned home, and Padre Damaso refused to perform a Catholic funeral. But when the governor general steps
in, the decree is overturned. The friar and Padre Salvi, his successor, represent the corrupt status of the clergy. Their
conflicted feelings—one paternal, the other carnal—for Maria Clara, Ibarra’s beloved and the stunning daughter of
wealthy Capitan Tiago, strengthen their resolve to thwart Ibarra’s intentions for a school. Tasio, the town
philosopher, humorously observes that previous attempts to achieve the same goal have failed, and his wise remark
makes it evident that all colonial rulers are afraid that a civilized people will cast off the yoke of oppression.
The plot of the Novel
The main issue in the book is how to do this specifically, which Ibarra discusses with the enigmatic Elias, whose life is entwine
his. While Elias, who has experienced injustice at the hands of the authorities, prefers violence, the affluent Ibarra favors nonv
methods.Salvi in particular, Ibarra's adversaries, accuse him of leading a phony revolt, albeit the case against him is tenuous.
Maria Clara turns against him in order to conceal a terrible family secret whose revelation would be disastrous. With Elias'
assistance, Ibarra breaks out of jail and confronts her. Ibarra is absolved after hearing her justification, and he and Elias take o
towards the lake. One, however, perishes as the other is pursued by the Guardia Civil. Maria Clara enters the nunnery believing
is dead and rejecting a marriage that Padre Damaso has arranged for her. Her unfortunate ending and that of the more legend
Sisa, who was driven insane by the fate of her sons, serve as a metaphor for the country's mixed-up state of beauty and misery
satire brilliantly, Rizal creates other memorable characters whose lives manifest the poisonous effects of religious and colonia
oppression. Capitan Tiago; the social climber Doña Victorina de Espadaña and her toothless Spanish husband; the Guardia Ci
head and his harridan of a wife; the sorority of devout women; the disaffected peasants forced to become outlaws: in sum, a
microcosm of Philippine society. In the afflictions that plague them, Rizal paints a harrowing picture of his beloved but sufferin
country in a work that speaks eloquently not just to Filipinos but to all who have endured or witnessed oppression.

Summary
The young and idealistic Juan Crisostomo Ibarra returns home a
years in Europe. The wealthy meztizo, like his father Don Rafael
for reform primarily in the area of education in order to eliminate po
improve the lives of his countrymen. Upon learning about his father’s demise
and the denial of a Catholic burial for his father Ibarra was provoked to hit
Padre Damaso which eventually lead to his excommunication. The
excommunication was later rescinded upon the intervention of the Governor
General.
Padre Salvi, Ibarra’s mortal enemy accused Ibarra of insurrection. Ibarra’
letter to his beloved Maria Clara was used against him. Later in the story
Maria Clara will tell Ibarra that she did not conspire to indict him. She wa
compelled to give Ibarra’s letter in exchange for the letters of her mothe
before she was born. Maria Clara found out that the letters of her mothe
were addressed to Padre Damaso about their unborn child which means tha
she is the biological daughter of the priest and not of her father, Capita
Tiago.
Summary
Meanwhile, Ibarra was able to escape the prison with Elias,
experienced injustice with the authorities. Ibarra was able to sp
Maria Clara about the letters and thereafter forgave her. Ibarra and

dead; she entered the nunnery instead of marrying Alfonso Linares.
The fatally wounded Elias found the child Basilio and his dead mother Sis
The latter was driven to insanity when she learned that her children were
implicated for theft by the sacristan mayor. Elias instructed Basilio to dig
his and Sisa’s graves and there is a buried treasure which he can use for h
education. Noli Me Tangere brilliantly described Philippine society with its
memorable characters. The melancholic fate of Maria Clara and the insan
of Sisa characterized the country’s pitiful state, which was once beautiful
turned miserable. Reading Noli Me Tangere will open one’s mind about
oppression and tyranny.

• He characterized the vision of Rizal for the Philippines during t
Spanish Colonial Time, and it was to not use violence as means
seeking freedom from the colonizers but instead to become an a

  • 4. Dr. Jose Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonzo Realonda Born on June 19, 1861 in Calamba Died, December 30, 1896 Manila Founder of La Liga Filipina Notable Works: Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo
  • 5. Rizal Being a Novelist • As we all know, Jose Rizal is known in many aspects. One of the talents that made him famous not just to the Filipinos but even with the enemies was him being the novelist. His Noli Me Tangere (Social Cancer) and even the sequel novel El Filibusterismo (The Reign of the Greed) had tremendous effects to the people of 19th century. • These two novels criticized and exposed the social life of that time included the abuses of the friars and the government officials in the Philippines. These two works of fiction are now considered two of the greatest social documents of all times. Maybe to some of you, you feel bored as we go along with this chapter because you have taken this as one of your subjects in high school. But this time, let us try to focus on the important characters and who or what are they representing in real life in the society especially during the 19th century.
  • 6. Dr. Jose Rizal Rizal wrote the novels not just for enterta but for noble purpose of redeeming the Filipinos from their miserable condition. He had two objectives in mind as he wrote them. 1. to expose the social malady affecting our country. 2. to awaken and develop the national consciousness the people. It is no doubt why, Jose Rizal is consid as the Father of Nationalism.
  • 7. The Dedication of the Novel Rizal dedicated his novel entitled “Noli Me Tangere” to his fatherland. Rizal sacrificed his personal needs in order for him to make a difference for our country. He made the novel to expose all the doings of the Spaniards in order to reawaken our senses. He was inspired by “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” to write about the inequ in Filipino society. With a Latin title (“Touch Me Not”) that allude passage in the Bible, the work, published in 1887, explores the oppression of the local people by priests and the government du the era of Spanish colonization.
  • 8. The Dedication of the Novel Jose Rizal wrote the first sections of his novel Noli Me Tangere in 1884 in Madrid, Spain when he was still studying medicine. Rizal drew his inspiration in writing No Me Tangere from a book entitled Uncle Tom’s Cabin which was authored by Harriet Beacher Stowe. Noli was originally written in Spanish, so the likelihood th Spanish authorities would read it first was very high;which is what Rizal wanted to happen. This led to his decision to write the sequel of Noli Me Tangere, the El filibusterismo.
  • 9. The plot of the Novel Noli Me Tangere, a book by José Rizal that was written in Spanish and released in 1887, was very important to the political development of the Philippines. Rizal provided a devastating analysis of a society under Spanish colonial power by drawing on personal experience, novelistic patterns from the nineteenth century, and ideals of European liberty. After spending seven years in Europe, Crisostomo Ibarra, the mixed-race heir to a powerful clan, returns home with plans to improve the situation of his fellow people. While attempting changes, he is met with an oppressive religious hierarchy and a governmental administration in Spain that is both brutal and apathetic. Through story events, the book implies that significant change in this situation is extremely difficult, if not impossible. Ibarra is excommunicated for assaulting the parish priest because Don Rafael, his father, passed away just before he returned home, and Padre Damaso refused to perform a Catholic funeral. But when the governor general steps in, the decree is overturned. The friar and Padre Salvi, his successor, represent the corrupt status of the clergy. Their conflicted feelings—one paternal, the other carnal—for Maria Clara, Ibarra’s beloved and the stunning daughter of wealthy Capitan Tiago, strengthen their resolve to thwart Ibarra’s intentions for a school. Tasio, the town philosopher, humorously observes that previous attempts to achieve the same goal have failed, and his wise remark makes it evident that all colonial rulers are afraid that a civilized people will cast off the yoke of oppression.
  • 10. The plot of the Novel The main issue in the book is how to do this specifically, which Ibarra discusses with the enigmatic Elias, whose life is entwine his. While Elias, who has experienced injustice at the hands of the authorities, prefers violence, the affluent Ibarra favors nonv methods.Salvi in particular, Ibarra's adversaries, accuse him of leading a phony revolt, albeit the case against him is tenuous. Maria Clara turns against him in order to conceal a terrible family secret whose revelation would be disastrous. With Elias' assistance, Ibarra breaks out of jail and confronts her. Ibarra is absolved after hearing her justification, and he and Elias take o towards the lake. One, however, perishes as the other is pursued by the Guardia Civil. Maria Clara enters the nunnery believing is dead and rejecting a marriage that Padre Damaso has arranged for her. Her unfortunate ending and that of the more legend Sisa, who was driven insane by the fate of her sons, serve as a metaphor for the country's mixed-up state of beauty and misery satire brilliantly, Rizal creates other memorable characters whose lives manifest the poisonous effects of religious and colonia oppression. Capitan Tiago; the social climber Doña Victorina de Espadaña and her toothless Spanish husband; the Guardia Ci head and his harridan of a wife; the sorority of devout women; the disaffected peasants forced to become outlaws: in sum, a microcosm of Philippine society. In the afflictions that plague them, Rizal paints a harrowing picture of his beloved but sufferin country in a work that speaks eloquently not just to Filipinos but to all who have endured or witnessed oppression.
