Supporting Today’s Digital Bank
Twinkle Brahmbhatt, Director Enterprise
Architecture, UBS
Enterprise Technology Management aims to
position financial technologies in-line with

Differentiating your business from the
competition is no longer just a matter of
product price, customer centricity, and ser-
vice on demand. You must be an agile, digital
organization. And while technology is fun-
damental to success, it is no longer enough
simply to implement good systems.
Instead—in a world where the cloud, so-
cial media, the Internet of Things, and mo-
bile technology are the major forces driving
demand and customer expectations—a total
digital transformation is required.
“A business today can no more compete
without digital transformation than an elite
athlete can compete without the highest
levels of fitness,” says Dr. Wolfram Jost, chief
technology officer at Software AG. “Digital
transformation introduces an entirely fresh
way to interact with customers and brings
them on innovative ‘digital’ journeys, to pro-
mote unique value propositions, and to go to
market in diverse and exciting ways.”
Digital transformation is more than an
IT upgrade or add-on. It requires a com-
pletely different set of disciplines to ap-
proach and achieve your goals. And these
disciplines create the bridge between goals
and accomplishment.
To engage the new world order requires a
brand new approach to technology; one that
is not constrained by previous IT depart-
ment decisions and allows you the flexibility
and independence to move forward as times
change. And yet, one which does not require
a wholesale “rip and replace” approach.
Although it may seem like an impos-
sible challenge, there is a way forward.
From extensive research and experience
with customers, Dr. Jost has concluded that
successful pioneers of digital transformation
are guided by seven critical enablers.
These are the seven guiding disciplines of
digital transformation:
1. Transformation: Streamlined process-
es orchestrated across multiple systems.
2. Integration: Consistent connectivity
across all IT operations.
3. Data: Accounting for expanding data
models across myriad systems.
4. Visibility: A real-time understand-
ing of the entire business that enables
quick response to challenges and
opportunities.
5. Applications: Controlling and auto-
mating processes that span multiple
applications and systems.
6. Scale: Leveraging big data for business
benefits with processes that are driven
by sophisticated analytics.
7. Connectivity: Easily sharing data both
internally and externally in order to im-
prove overall efficiency.
To stay relevant, every enterprise must be
data-driven, customer-obsessed, hypercon-
nected, and super agile. The seven disci-
plines of digital transformation illuminate
the path. But along with these crucial aids to
navigation, the right tools are also essential
for a successful journey.
Software AG pioneered the development
of the world’s first Digital Business Platform
with the seven disciplines at its core. The plat-
form enables seamless connectivity among
systems, processes, customers, and suppliers
in order to optimize efficiency and agility. It
is independent of existing technology invest-
ments and offers unrivalled flexibility. ■

Global competition is intense, and it’s chang-
ing the business landscape like never before.
Studies estimate that 40% of today’s Fortune
500 companies will not exist in 10 years. To re-
main relevant, companies must keep up with
their customers’ ever-increasing expectations
while encouraging innovation. This means
embracing the disruptive technology and pro-
gressive trends that are transforming the way
they do business. Companies that can’t do so
may soon find themselves obsolete.
Top IT leaders recognize this and regard digi-
tal transformation as the most important way to
remain competitive. In IDG’s annual State of the
CIO survey, 45% of CIOs identified their role in
2016 as “transformational.” But transformation
isn’t easy. Or simple. While this definitely creates
new opportunities, it also creates challenges, es-
pecially for organizations that have not aligned
their business and IT strategies.
Some companies believe digital transforma-
tion is about cutting costs, but that motivation
cannot overshadow its more meaningful pur-
pose—enabling and delivering a wholly new
type of customer experience. Kevin Niblock,
Software AG North America President and
COO, explains: “We’re seeing IT executives
focusing too much on IT cost reduction rather
than business innovation.”
Niblock notes that CIOs are beginning to ap-
preciate the magnitude of interconnectivity, but
most IT executives are still caught up in a world
of silos. This has a lot to do with how technol-
ogy is sold to IT professionals. IT vendors have
different product lines or single-threaded solu-
tions. Most of these vendors are not looking at
their customers’ business holistically and how
all of the pieces work together to deliver a digital
customer experience. Most importantly, many
products end up enabling parity rather than dif-
ferentiated innovation.
Digital transformation is also about disen-
tangling historical and real-time data from
applications, suppliers, and—most impor-
tantly—customers. It’s about “event enabling”
the back office, putting that event information
in an in-memory data grid, correlating events in
real time, and acting on those events to unlock
customer and enterprise value. Niblock says,
“Event data needs to be a first-class citizen.” In
the State of the CIO survey, two of the top three
IT categories earmarked for budget increases
in 2016—BI Analytics (50%) and Predictive
Analytics (47%)—tie back to this need.
So what’s the solution? Companies must
think about technology differently. Digital
transformation is more than an IT upgrade
or add-on; it is the lifeblood of organizations
because it allows them to deliver new business
models, creating new revenue sources with in-
creased margins.
The silo problem can be avoided by working
with companies like Software AG that provide
the entire technology platform necessary for
digital transformation. The 45-year-old com-
pany helps combine existing on-premise and
cloud systems into a single platform to digitize
and optimize business operations. It does so by
combining process management, data integra-
tion, and real-time analytics modules into a
single Digital Business Platform—enabling an
enterprise to be more data-driven, customer-
obsessed, hyper-connected, and agile. As
Aristotle said, “The whole is greater than the
sum of its parts,” and Software AG’s Digital
Business Platform delivers more than the sum
of its parts. It provides the ability to not only
leverage the whole, but also leverage the parts
that you didn’t realize were important.
With the rapid disruption evidenced by
the evolving Fortune 500, an enterprise’s abil-
ity to remain competitive is always at stake.
But for an enterprise with an effective digital
platform and the right motivations, the trans-
forming frontier of digital business is a place
of opportunity and promise. ■

Chef Morimoto, born and raised in
Hiroshima, Japan, learned the art of
sushi and traditional kaiseki cuisine by
training under several of his country’s
esteemed master chefs. After being
the chef-owner of a restaurant in
japan for five years, Chef Morimoto
moved to New York city to explore
western cooking styles. Fifteen years
later, he has become well known
for his unsurpassed culinary talent.
Among chef Morimoto’s passions is
his collection of traditional Japanese
culinary tools. Recently, Ralph Lauren
designed his new chef wear.
