This is an opinion essay I wrote about male chauvinism in Mexico. I think that this is a problem that we all should care about and also start doing something to stop it.

“MALE CHAUVINISM IN MEXICO”
If you live in Mexico, you’ve probably heard the phrase: “Behind every man there’s a great woman”
and women are supposed to take it as a compliment but it only makes them wonder: “Why not in
front of him or beside?” It is because is just a reminder for women that they’re not in the same
position as men; this is one of many examples that are undressing Mexico as the male chauvinist
society it is as a result of the construction of its gender roles.
Gender roles usually give women a position of inferiority that may lead to problems like fewer job
opportunities and less salary. This year’s statistics about employment in Mexico indicate that almost
70% of the jobs are occupied by men and only 30% by women and around 50% of these women
receive a salary equal to two minimum salaries while only 30% on men received a salary this low.
These two problems are the least of the worries if you realize that male chauvinism has blinded
society till the point where a problem like femicide is left on the back burner. Every day seven
femicides take place, resulting in 2555 women murdered per year and this statistic has been the same
in Mexico for the last 10 years, this means that as a result, twenty-five thousand women are missing
in this country but people don’t marche every year or blame the president because of it, but they do it
for the 43 missing students from Ayotzinapa, making me feel that 43 male students are more
important than twenty-five thousand women. Both situations are unfortunate but people don’t care
about it with the same magnitude and it’s all because of the male chauvinism.
To conclude I want to say that just like the problems I mentioned in this essay, there are a lot more
that won’t be solved unless we make something to eradicate male chauvinism from Mexican society.
