by
2. Introduction
Bergey’s manual of systematic bacteriology is a manual referring to the taxonomy of
prokaryotic bacteria. It was prepared by the American bacteriologist,David Hendricks
Bergey in 1923.It is a manual that deals with the identification of bacteria. It has been
published in 9 edition.
Purpose
It provide detailed information on bacterial classification and detailed characteristics of
taxa and species.
3. Characteristics used for classification in edition 1
• General shape and morphology
• Gram staining properties
• Oxygen relationship
• Motility
• Presence of endospores
• Mode of energy production
The second edition of the bergey’s manual has the following volumes where it does not group
all the clinically important prokaryotes together as the 1st edition does , here the pathogenic
bacteria are placed phylogenetically, and so are distributed throughout in all volumes.
5. Gram (-) bacteria
• Includes medicinally important bacteria
• Thin peptidoglycan layer
• Outer membrane containing lipopolysaccharide
• Phototropic,chemolithotropic or chemoorgantotropic
Gram+ bacteria
• Thick peptidoglycan layer
• Chemoorganoheterotrophic
• Primarily exotoxins are produced
• Some can form endospores
• Peptidoglycan molecules are cross linked by pentaglycine chains
Archea
• They are extremophiles like methanotrophs, halophiles
• Cell wall is made of pseudomurein
• Asexual reproduction in binaryfission
• Ether bond in membrane lipids
Actinobacteria
• Anaerobes or microaerophilic
• No production of endospore
• Produce filamentous hyphae
• Important for humus formation
