Design for change Project Title: “Brighten up your world and mine”
The week in which it was implemented: Sept.20th - 27th 2010
FEEL :The problem that we were trying to change was to make the school surroundings
a brighter one to share the laughter, fun and joy that we have in school with our regular
and rainbow friends. While playing one day,the ball hit the wall,we tried to catch it and
the paint peeled off. This made us very ashamed. We wanted to do something to make us
feel better and make others proud of us.
IMAGINE: There were many, many ideas that we had. These ideas included brightening
up the school by painting it and also painting all the areas of the school that had gone
bad; mending the softboards, cleaning the “dirty” areas of the school, planting saplings,
improving the herbal garden. There were bigger ideas like starting a school for poor
children; setting up a home and school for orphans and even hoping to become a
Principal of the school like Sister Cyril!
We finally decided on setting up the Bright, Clean and Green groups who would paint
clean and make the school greener respectively.
DO: Our final solution and did we actually change both ourselves and the situation?
This is a report of the Bright group.
We first went round the whole school and tried to find out where the paint had come off.
There were many, many places on the school walls, staircases, corridors. Our school has
3 floors so there was plenty to do! Some were tiny spots while others were bigger. We
brought a small broken cup, a rag, paintbrush nos.4, 6, and 8 from home. We lent our
paintbrushes to our friends who did not have one. The teacher and Art sir gave us green
enamel paint and later we were given turpentine oil to clean our hands and paintbrushes.
We worked in pairs and took turns cleaning and painting.
After a week of painting and painting for at least 2 periods each day and for an hour after
school, we were tired but happy!
Our other friends made posters with slogans like “Do not touch-wet paint”,
“Keep your hands off the walls”, “Smile and the world smiles too and many more.
When we entered school that bright Friday morning, what a difference there was! The
school walls, corridors, staircases looked bright and happy too! There were no scratches
or peeled off areas.Bright posters gave us important messages.
Sister, our teachers, parents, domestic staff praised us. Our other school friends and didis
wanted to join us and paint too.We enjoyed the work but did not think the result would be
so beautiful. Also, now when we go up and down the staircase, especially with our
schoolbags or when we play, we are very careful about the paint. It does not come off so
easily also either. We may get hurt while playing but the paint does not!
