PostgreSQL with PostGIS is a RDBMS…
• with support for a geometry type (point, line, polygon)
• able to index this geometry type data
• which has functions for the geometry type data
… and hence is able to answer GIS questions directly and on
large volumes of data.
The DBMS is aware of the spatial data.
