visitors per year, the Auschwitz-Birkenau
Memorial Museum is located in Poland on
the site of the former Birkenau death camp.
Since its establishment in 1947 as a
memorial to the lives lost during the
Holocaust, many changes have occurred.
The museum received expansions in 1950,
and an additional exhibit opened in 1955.
Furthermore, plaques memorializing 4 million
Auschwitz deaths were replaced in 1990
with new ones representing the more
accurate figure of 1.5 million.
