2. Since her children were born, Debra Kasirer
has played an active role in their
education, and has participated in several
parents’ organizations and fundraising
activities for schools in Beverly Hills and Los
Angeles. Debra Kasirer continued her
involvement when they went to college,
and was especially influential in supporting
the Hillel organizations at the University of
Pennsylvania and the University of California
- Los Angeles.
3. Founded in 1923 at the University of Illinois,
Hillel, the Foundation for Jewish Campus Life,
has grown into the world’s largest campus
organization for Jewish students, helping them
to stay connected to their faith while in college
and setting a foundation for a lifetime of
faithful living. Hillel chapters regularly offer
Shabbat services and other activities, and
promote social activism. For example, the
UCLA Hillel chapter promotes the Alternative
Spring Break, focusing on short-term service
projects dealing with such issues as poverty
and hunger, disaster relief, and civic
engagement.
