1. I am Deborah Bishop from Long Beach, Mississippi. I have been in the teaching profession for
28 years. I have a B.A. Degree in French, Spanish and English from the University of Southern
Mississippi. I attended Rice University for two summers (2009,2011) for AP Certification in
Spanish and English. In December of 2014, I received my second BA Degree from the
University of Southern Mississippi in English, History, and Fashion. I speak French and Spanish
fluently. I studied French at the Sorbonne in Paris. I have studied Spanish at the University of
Madrid and The University of Salamanca.
I taught for the Department of Defense Schools for two years (2001-2003). I was based in
Pusan, Korea- I taught at Pusan American School. I taught in a Unit School, K through 12, the
school was quite small 250 students. I taught Spanish I, II, III, IV, and the upper levels of
French III and IV, ninth grade English and English as a Second Language.
In 2013-2014, I taught Spanish and English in Daegu, South Korea for the Department of
Defense. I taught Spanish and English to Middle School. On a rotating basis, I was involved in
a FLES Program. (Teaching Foreign Language to Elementary School/Kindergarten-Second
Grade.) I made as many Korean friends as possible and I got involved with the Culture, the
people and learned as much as possible:
Estee Lauder: After school, three days a week, I worked for Estee Lauder as a Greeter,
and learned to do “makeovers” on Asian ladies. (Whenever I did a “makeover” it really caused a
“sensation”- all of the customers stopped to watch!)
Asian Games: (The Olympic Games for Asia) I worked in the International Business
Department on the brochures in English, to make sure they were grammatically correct.
Korean Foreign Language Fair: I started and organized this for all of the DOD Schools
in Korea. The DOD Schools in Japan had asked me to come to judge their Japanese Foreign
Language Fair in Tokyo. My principal in Korea was very insulted that the schools in Korea were
not invited- so he sent me to Japan to see how it was done- then it was up to me to organize one
when I returned- and I did- it was very successful!
Miss Korea Pageant: I was asked to judge the pageant by the mayor of the City of
Pusan. I met the mayor at a dinner party for the teachers. The young lady that was chosen
participated in the Miss Universe Pageant. I was the judge who asked the contestants the English
questions.
Student Council Advisor: The student council, three teachers and I made five thousand
chocolate chip cookies for the soldiers at the DMZ. This was a community service activity.
2. Aerobics: I took an aerobics class with Korean women every Tuesday and Thursday.
The instructors were Olympic Aerobic Champions! Their trophies were everywhere!
Traditional Korean Dance: I found an excellent teacher thanks to the mayor of Pusan.
She was one of his best friends. I danced in a recital at Dong-Na University in traditional
Korean dress. We received a standing ovation!
Fashion Show: I had the chance to model in a fashion show by one of the leading
Korean Designers, Andre Kim!
9/11: I was in Korea when 9/11 happened- the Student Council was in charge of the 9/11
memorial service. A banner was made and signed by all of the students, teachers and
administrators and sent to the President of the United States.
I have experience in Honors and Advanced Placement. I have a strong background in Socratic
Teaching and Close Reading Methodology and Higher Order Thinking in English classes,
Spanish classes and French classes. Heavy emphasis is placed on writing in all classes.
I have excellent communication skills, a willingness to mentor students, a vision for excellence
and a strong desire for students to be successful!
Sincerely
Deborah Bishop (Debbie)
