3. Exact spelling need not be used in a search
• Use a truncation symbol (*) to represent any
number of characters following the root word
• Tip: most search engines require at least 3
characters in the root
• Example: electroly* (returns electrolysis,
electrolytic, etc)
• Use a wildcard symbol (?) to represent a single
undefined character
• Example: Sm?th? (returns Smythe, Smith, Smyth)
