2. Our experience working with the
communications industry has taught us
the value of not only listening closely to
clients, but also thoroughly understanding
their product and market before
attempting to communicate a message to
their customers. We very much believe in a
collaborative process of working together
to ensure our clients are involved from the
initial brief to the finished product, as we
know how much you value your brand.
For us, collaboration is key to the success
of any campaign and this ethos has formed
the backbone of our success to date. It’s
an approach that forms the basis of all our
relationships and as such is a major part of
our methodology and thinking.
Human have been in business for
over 10 years with over 30 years
combined experience of working in

If only everything in life was as black & white
Edwards & Pearce candidates add to
profitability, productivity and efficiency. For most
organisations, their staff are either their most
important or, at the very least, a major asset.
Edwards & Pearce recognise this and see their
role as maximising the benefit that can be
achieved from employing the best possible
staff in every position through an organisation’s
hierarchy.
Value added factor
Edwards & Pearce’s experience has shown that a
candidate’s worth is best measured by a Valued
Added Factor. This is the amount by which a
good candidate can:
• Increase sales
• Improve efficiency
• Increase profitability
• Decrease overheads
• Improve productivity
• Reduce wastage
A good candidate does this through the following
combination of attributes:
• Skills
• Personality
• Experience
• Attitude
It is Edwards & Pearce’s objective to ensure, for
every position we handle, we put forward the
candidates with the best of all of the above
attributes. We recognise that the most skilled
candidate with a poor attitude may not have the
same impact as a less skilled person with a better
attitude. It is equally important to recognise the
impact a poorer candidate can have on an
organisation:
• Reduced sales
• Inefficiency
• Decreased profitability
• Increased overheads
• Poorer productivity
Most managers will be able to relate to a
member of staff they may have managed in the
past who may have had one of the above
undesired effects on their company.
It is these type of candidates that employers try
and avoid, but this is not easy without expert
help; Edwards & Pearce will minimise the risk of
selecting a “value decreasing” candidate whilst
maximising the chance of employing the best
possible candidate who will add the most value
to the organisation.

“Pre-Treatment” of Non-Hazardous Waste –
Your Quick And Easy Guide
The Definition of
“Pre-Treatment”
“physical, thermal, chemical or
biological processes (including sorting)
that change the characteristics of the
waste in order to reduce its volume, or
hazardous nature, facilitate its handling
or enhance its recovery”. For most
people:
“Pre-treatment” =
Sorting and Recycling
A Word About
Landfill Tax
The doubling of disposal charges
predicted for October 2007 are in
addition to Landfill Tax. Landfill Tax has
already risen to £24 per tonne and will
rise to £32 per tonne in April 2008 and
by £8 per tonne per year until 2010-11.
Pre-treatment regulations will increase
disposal costs further. You can reduce
the impact of these costs – see inset
below.
Financial
100% disposal
cost increase
Disposal costs (in
addition to Landfill Tax)
are predicted to increase
by 100% - doubling from around £50 per
tonne to over £100 per tonne.
By separating out your
recyclable waste you will reduce
the amount picked up by the
waste contractor, reducing your
waste collection costs.
If 50% of your waste can be
recycled that’s up to 50%
reduction in the disposal
element of your waste collection
costs.
Operational
Returned and uncollected
waste
Landfill Operators are empowered to conduct
visual inspections, check paperwork and
satisfy themselves that the waste has been
pre-treated. They have a duty to REJECT
waste which contains material that could have
been recycled.
To recycle you will need
equipment to handle and present
the waste for a recycler. If volumes
are high enough you can receive
an income from your waste. Some
operational practices will need to
change but they will help to keep
your costs down and are better
than having uncollected waste.
Legal
Possible
fines
Landfill operators
will need written
evidence that the
waste has been
pre-treated. If
waste producers
are found to be accepting untreated waste
then they will find themselves in trouble with
the Environment Agency who can resort to
the courts and impose heavy fines.
Timely consideration of the need
to pre-treat your waste will
eliminate the legal consequences,
leaving you free to concentrate on
your core business.
Plan Now To Avoid Headaches And Extra Cost
Your Recycling Equipment Options overleaf…
On 30th October 2007, new regulations for non-hazardous waste
come into force. They affect every business or organisation
generating non-hazardous waste – that means you. If you don’t
prepare for it the consequences will be much higher waste
disposal costs or the inconvenience of uncollected waste on
your premises.
Bergmann Direct have put together this simplified guide to help
you understand what you need to do to comply.
What Does “Pre-Treatment” Mean?
The official definition of ‘pre-treatment’ is:
“physical, thermal, chemical or biological processes
(including sorting) that change the characteristics of the
waste in order to reduce its volume, or hazardous nature,
facilitate its handling or enhance its recovery”. For most
people:
“Pre-treatment” = Sorting and Recycling
The easiest way to comply is to separate recyclables
such as cardboard, plastic, paper and only landfilling
what’s left. This will have changed the nature of the
waste and you will have enhanced its recovery.
What Happens If You Don’t
“Pre-Treat” Waste?
From 30th October 2007, the landfill operator will no
longer accept non-hazardous waste that hasn’t been
“pre-treated”. He will ask the waste contractor (who
collects the waste from you) for evidence that it has been
“pre-treated”.
What’s more, the landfill
operator will do spot-checks and has a duty to refuse
waste which looks as though it could have been pre-
treated but wasn’t. In turn, your waste contractor could
stop collecting waste from you unless you pre-treat (sort
and separate) the waste and provide a document to
prove it. If Bergmann Direct already manage your
collections we will provide the correct form for you.
The Costs Of Not Pre-Treating
Waste
From October 30th 2007, recycling will no longer be
‘optional’. What’s more, unless you can demonstrate that
you have pre-treated your waste, the financial costs
could be very high.
No fines or penalty charges are being imposed as yet.
But since pre-treatment will involve additional handling,
waste disposal charges are predicted to double from
October. And this is in addition to Landfill Tax, which will
go up again by £8 a tonne in April 2008. You can save
yourself thousands of pounds by being prepared.
