The Battle River Coal-Fired Generating Station is located
approximately 200 kilometres southeast of Edmonton on the
banks of the Battle River and is a major employer of people
living in the farming communities surrounding it.
Water for the Battle River Generating Station is supplied by a
reservoir created in 1954 by a 12 metre high dam located on the
Battle River.
Environmental Highlights
Battle River works with mining company Westmoreland Coal
Company to ensure that the mined land is returned to levels of
productivity that are either equivalent to, or better than what
existed prior to mining.
Battle River has received its registration with the International
Organization for Standardization (ISO) model for environmental
managements systems under ISO 14001.

COAL-FIRED THERMAL
GENERATING PLANTS
Electricity is produced by burning coal in
large boilers, then transferring the heat
energy released to the boiler tubes. The
heat transferred to the tubes creates
high pressure, super-heated steam from
water inside the tubes. This steam
is then directed through piping to the
steam turbine where it is converted to
mechanical energy by expanding across
the turbine blades causing the turbine
to spin. A shaft connects the steam
turbine to the generator, causing the
generator to spin. The generators use
an electromagnetic field to convert this
mechanical energy into electrical energy.
After expanding through the steam
turbine, the steam is then condensed
back to water and pumped back to the
boiler where the cycle starts all over.
BENEFITS
• Efficiency levels are higher than
traditional thermal power generation or
open-cycle gas turbine power generation
• Emissions are minimized through low
NOx burners in the gas turbines
