ELECTRICAL GENERATION
• The conversion of energy available in different forms in nature into
Electrical energy is known as ELECTRICAL GENERATION.
TYPES OF ELECTRICAL GENERATION PLANT
• THERMAL POWER PLANT.
• HYDRO POWER PLANT.
• NUCLEAR POWER PLANT.
• SOLAR POWER PLANT.
• WIND POWER PLANT.
• GAS POWER PLANT.
• TIDAL POWER PLANT.
• In India 65% of total power is generated by the Thermal Power
Stations.
• Thermal power plant converts the heat energy of coal in to
electrical energy.
• Coal is burnt in a boiler which convert water in to steam.
• The expansion of steam in turbine produces mechanical power
which drives the alternator coupled to the turbine.
• In thermal generating stations coal, oil, natural gas etc. are
employed as primary sources of energy.

 Now that pulverized coal is put in boiler furnace. Boiler is an
enclosed vessel in which water is heated and circulated until
the water is turned in to steam at the required pressure.

• The function of fuel handling
plant is automatic feeding of
coal to the boiler furnace.
• A 80MW plant may required
around 1000 tons of coal daily.

• Water is heated, turns into steam
and spins a steam turbine which
drives an electrical generator. After
it passes through the turbine, the
steam is condensed in a condenser

• Coal contain a considerable amount of ash.
• The function of Ash handling plant is
automatic handle of coal ash out from the
boiler furnace.
ELECTRICAL COMPONENT
• Alternator.
• Transformer.
i. Step up.
ii. Step down.
Alternator:
In thermal power plants ,several generating units are used to
increase the total capacity of the plant.
Transformer:
A generating station has different types of transformers which
are as follows.
{i} main step-up transformer which step-up the generation voltage
for transmission of power.
{ii} station transformers which are used for general service in the
power station.

  • 5. • In India 65% of total power is generated by the Thermal Power Stations. • Thermal power plant converts the heat energy of coal in to electrical energy. • Coal is burnt in a boiler which convert water in to steam. • The expansion of steam in turbine produces mechanical power which drives the alternator coupled to the turbine. • In thermal generating stations coal, oil, natural gas etc. are employed as primary sources of energy.   • 10. BOILER Fig. BOILER  Now that pulverized coal is put in boiler furnace. Boiler is an enclosed vessel in which water is heated and circulated until the water is turned in to steam at the required pressure.

  • 12. FUEL HANDLING PLANT Fig. FUEL HANDLING PLANT • The function of fuel handling plant is automatic feeding of coal to the boiler furnace. • A 80MW plant may required around 1000 tons of coal daily.

  • 16. Alternator: In thermal power plants ,several generating units are used to increase the total capacity of the plant. Transformer: A generating station has different types of transformers which are as follows. {i} main step-up transformer which step-up the generation voltage for transmission of power. {ii} station transformers which are used for general service in the power station.
