Foley artist job description
A Foley artist is someone who creates or adds sound effects for TV, film or radio
shows that the microphone doesn't quite pick up.
Foley artists usually rerecord common sounds like footsteps, fights, and fist banging
on a door, or pouring wine, shards of glass falling from a broken window. The sounds
that they recreate give the scene some realism. Foley artists don't usually start their
work until postproduction at the end of picture editing. The artist rerecords these
sounds in a Foley studio using different objects. They also have to do it in time with
the clip. For example if someone stabs an animal the Foley artist recreates that sound
using objected and do it in time with the actor in the clip.
Key skills that a Foley artist should have are to:
Have a good awareness of audibility
Good experience of sound recording
Good listening and visual skills
To be able to work under pressure
Good communication skills
To be able to organized
Work to a deadline
Be aware of health and safety laws and precautions
If you want to become a Foley artist you usually start as a runner in a sound studio or
audio postproduction house. This is a good way to create connections and understand
more about how the process works in a real working environment. Foley artists will
need a degree in Arts, Music, Electronics, Math’s, or Sound Technology. It would
also be more beneficial if you also have a post-graduate qualification in Sound.
Most cast and crew for s film, TV or radio show are self employed typical Foley artist
gets paid £50000 per project.
