The minimal amount of text on the cover
doesn‟t tell us much about the contents of
this magazine.
The masthead stands out against the
black background, the colour orange can
be used to represent warmth, so it could
be used to entice the reader into wanting
to read it.
The black background could be used to
emphasise the name of the magazine
„Spotlight‟, which could also be why there
isn‟t much text other than the title.
The image on the cover has a boy in the
middle tinted orange (matching the
masthead) and either side of him he has
the angel and the devil, he looks torn
between them. This could hint towards
what‟s inside of the magazine. Also as it
was published in January it would‟ve
been around the time of the exams, so
this image could show the inner-battle of
a student.
3. Stoke Newington School
Not many colours used in the contents
page, which makes it a bit dull.
Standard font used, the page titles are in
bold but other than that no change in text
on the whole contents page. Except
underneath the contents there is a purple
box containing a letter from the
headteacher, the purple fill of the box and
the two pictures are the only source of
colour on the whole page.
A few of the page titles look interesting
and would appeal to students.
Overall the contents page is a bit dull, the
pictures give no insight to what
interesting things are in the magazine for
students to read.
4. King Edward VI Stourbridge.
This cover fits the codes and conventions of
a magazine cover than the previous
magazine does, there are puffs around the
image telling us about articles in the
magazine.
The colours are bright and enticing, and the
font is informal so students are more likely to
be interested.
The central image shows 5 smiling students
so the reader assumes that all the students
must be happy at the school which makes
the reputation of the school come off better,
also the colour yellow has connotation of
happiness.
In one of the puffs at the bottom “Life after
King Ed‟s”, the text is highlighted in red. Red
has connotations of danger or warning, so
the article is trying to say you need to read
the article because it‟s important. It stands
out against the other articles as the others
are all in white and yellow to match the
masthead.
The masthead is very bold and the yellow
font contrasts with the black box, and it

The contents page has a green colour
scheme, different to the yellow and white
scheme of the cover. The greens suggest
environment/nature, at the bottom of the
page it says “printed on material sourced
from fully sustainable forests.” So the
school is trying to enforce how
sustainable they‟re trying to be.
There are no pictures about the articles in
the contents, it‟s just plain text which
doesn‟t differ in size/colour/font
throughout the page.
This contents page is also dull but not as
much as Spotlight, the colour make it
brighter but there is nothing that could
catch the eye of a student reader.
However some of the topics look
interesting and there is a variety of
pages, so there would be something for
everyone.
6. Blackpool Sixth Form
The white colour of the masthead,
contrasts with the dark colour of the wall
so it stands out.
The green colour of the spray painted
leaf has connotations of nature and the
environment this is linked to one of the
stories at the bottom of the page, “Eco
Action”.
The colours are quite dull this could
enforce the fact that this magazine is
formal and should be taken seriously.
The articles would entice a wider range of
audiences, boys would be more
interested in the “Survival Guide” article,
whereas “Beauty on a Budget” would be
more interesting for girls.
7. Blackpool Sixth Form
The contents colour match the colour
scheme of the cover, excluding green.
There are pictures down the left, probably
related to the articles which I think is a
good idea, it‟s like giving a preview.
The article names are creative some of
them use alliteration, which appealing to
the reader because it‟s informal.
The layout is standard and very simple, it
also gives no additional information to the
topics in the contents so the student‟s
don‟t really know what to expect.
The colours are again dull so this
contradicts to the informal page titles.
