1. Course Introduction
This course introduces the students to the sound systems of the English language with
the expectation of raising awareness among the potential teachers about how the
English sounds are used in the utterances. The course begins with the discussion of the
basic concepts of English phonetics and phonology followed by the production of the
English vowels and consonants.
2. Objectives
General objectives of this course are to:
a) introduce students to the basic concepts of English phonetics and phonology
b) make them familiar with the production of speech sounds
c) enable them to produce English consonants and vowels appropriately
d) make them aware of the changes of sounds in connected speech
e) enable them to analyze the words in terms of syllable division
f) help them use the appropriate intonation patterns of English
g) give them practice in the English sounds in context

The internal examination will be conducted based on the following criteria:
a) Attendance
b) Class participation
c) Class presentation: 2 presentations on topics assigned by the teacher
d) Project/Assignment I: 2 essays on the topics chosen by students and approved by
the teacher.
e) Project/Assignment II: 2 oral interviews based on the practice book.
f) Mid-term exam

Far-western University – English Phonetics and Phonology 1 Far-western University Faculty of Education B.Ed. in English Education Course Title: English Phonetics and Phonology Semester: Second Course No. : Eng.Ed.121 Full marks: 100 Credit Hour: 3 (45 hours) Pass marks: 45 1. Course Introduction This course introduces the students to the sound systems of the English language with the expectation of raising awareness among the potential teachers about how the English sounds are used in the utterances. The course begins with the discussion of the basic concepts of English phonetics and phonology followed by the production of the English vowels and consonants. 2. Objectives General objectives of this course are to: a) introduce students to the basic concepts of English phonetics and phonology b) make them familiar with the production of speech sounds c) enable them to produce English consonants and vowels appropriately d) make them aware of the changes of sounds in connected speech e) enable them to analyze the words in terms of syllable division f) help them use the appropriate intonation patterns of English g) give them practice in the English sounds in context 3. Contents in detail with Specific Objectives Specific Objectives Contents in Detail  explain the phonemes and other aspects of pronunciation  be familiar with the English accents  describe phonemes and other symbols Unit One: Introduction to English Phonetics and Phonology 1.1. Phonemes and other aspects of pronunciation 1.2. Accents and dialects 1.3. Phonemes and symbols 1.3.1. The phoneme 1.3.2. Symbols and transcription 1.3.3. Phonology  draw the organs of speech  produce the sounds correctly  distinguish long vowels, dipthongs and tripthongs Unit Two: The Production of Speech Sounds 2.1. Articulators above the larynx 2.2. Vowels and consonants 2.3. English short vowels 2.4. Long vowels, dipthongs and tripthongs  identify voicing in the sounds  produce the plossives  distinguish fortis from lenis Unit Three: Voicing and Consonants 3.1. The larynx 3.2. Far-western University – English Phonetics and Phonology 3 The internal examination will be conducted based on the following criteria: a) Attendance b) Class participation c) Class presentation: 2 presentations on topics assigned by the teacher d) Project/Assignment I: 2 essays on the topics chosen by students and approved by the teacher. e) Project/Assignment II: 2 oral interviews based on the practice book. f) Mid-term exam 7.
