civil servant for the
commonwealth of England under
Oliver Cromwell.
He best known for his epic poem
Paradise lost (1667), written in
blank verse.

in the puritan age.
Milton’s poetry and prose reflect
deep personal convictions,a passion
for freedom and self –
determination. He combine both
the spirit of Renaissance and
Reformation
3. Paradise Lost
Paradise Lost best epic poem of 17th
century ,published in 1667, ten
books ,republished in twelve books
1674.
The story of creation and fall of
human. Basically recreates the
biblical story of the ‘ fall of man ‘
mostly taken from the ‘ Book of
Genesis’.
We find conflict between good and
evil ,character like God, satan ,Adam
and Eve creation of God.theme as
disobedience ,revenge ,hierarchy
and fall of man.
4. Theme of disobedience leads to a breakdown of
hierarchical or social order with disastrous
consequences.
The proper way of the world was for inferiors to obey
superiors because superiors were well superiors. A
king was king not because he was chosen but
because he was superior to his subjects.
God as a superior to every other thing in the universe
and should always be obeyed.
In paradise lost God denied Adam and Eve not to
eat fruit from the tree of knowledge , but not
obeying the rule Adam and Eve bring calamity into
their lives and of all mankind.
5. Eve argues with adam about whether they should
work together or apart, Eve disobey the Adam.
Eve tempted and eat the fruit and also for
equality and love adam also disobey the God;
as a result they lost paradise with punishment
of God.
6. The layout of the universe –with heaven above, hell
below and the earth in the middle. This spatial
hierarchy leads to a social hierarchy of
angels,humans,animals and devils.
Satan can make their own hierarchy in hell, but they
are neverthless subject to God’s overall hierarchy In
which they are ranked the lowest.
Eve created to served both God and Adam. When
she persuades Adam to let her work alone , She
challenges her superior , Adam yields to her as his
inferior.
7. 3) The Fall as a
partly Fortune
Adam refers to his own sin as a’ happy
fault’ suggesting that fall of
humankind.
Adam and Eve’s disobedience allows
God to show his mercy and
temperance in their punishment and
eternal providence towards
humankinds.
Humankind now experience pain and
death. Good will come of sin and
death .
This fortune justifies God’s reasoning
and his ultimate plan for humankind
8. God’s nature to turn everything from bad to
good .God has created earth and human to
replace bad angels ,and sent Jesus to redeem
the fallen human.
God gave free will to them and allowed them
to fall. The free will of man causes his own
downfall.
The fall of man ,turns evil into good that fact
shows the justice of god’s action.
10. We can say its about creation of Adam and Eve by God
,their temptation by satan for revenge against God.
Free will of man and punishment for all mankind.
