• Each personborn in this worldis completely a
separate component as well as source of divine
energy. The sparkle of this energy can be seen
when the person exposes himself to the natural
world. Like a shaffle of coal contains ashes
covering them require a feeble air blow to
expose the glow. Similarly, a person's qualities
require a simple rub to make them gliter. This is a
fact that human reveals himself by the help of
his behaviour and actions.
Preface:
• There are many sort of people who belong to
different criteria of life. Each with a separate
world and different acquisitions. The expression
he imparts on others are result of his
experiences that he had attained while going
through different situations. Same is here with
JohnMilton.
• John Milton (1608– 1674), who is famous for his
great epic poem Paradise Lost.We will discuss
the Central Character of Paradise Lost named
Satan. Our main focus is to discuss the
character of Satanentirely in a manner to show
that he is a Renaissance Character. For this
purpose we will need to get to know about
Renaissance Age and Puritan Age. These
ageshave imparted great effect on Milton’s
personality. That is why it will prove beneficial to
clearlyrecognize Satan.
Renaissance
• Renaissance means rebirth of an interest in
classical Greek literature. Renaissance means
rebirth and it revived man’s interest in the world
and gave him new eyes to look upon the beauty,
love, life, learning and liberty.
• Renaissance Age:
• The Renaissance Age in English Literature is
also called the Elizabethan Era. This age has its
emphasis on Humanity. Humanism standing for
Man’s concern with himself as an object of
contemplation. Passion for life which was
responsible for the exquisite lyrical poetry.
Under the impact of the Renaissance, the
peopleof England were infused with freshness
and vigour.
BASIC
CONCEPTS
puritanism
• begun in England in the 17th century
was a radical Protestant movement to
reform the Church of England.
• The Renaissance had it’s emphasis on
Humanism which means man’s concern
with himself as an object of
comtemplation.
Puritan Age:
• The seventeenth century was marked by
change in spirit and temperament which
may be called essentially modern. John
Milton was the noblest representative of
the Puritan spirit. Puritanswere profoundly
religious, they did not form a seperate
religious sect. They were the real
champions of liberty and tolerance.
Age of
Milton:
• Miltonic poems represent his age and it’s
characteristics asMilton acted as a
dominant poetic figure. Milton worked as a
dominant worker as he was a
Puritanhimself. He acted against the
government and the consequences led
him to jail. Here his sight went to it’s end.
Here his epic poem Paradise Lost was
written.Paradise Lost shows the act of
God upon humanity and angels.
Individualism
• It means the individual is important,
man is important. Man is the centre
of each and everything. Human
values, feelings, emotions, desires
are important. They should be
fullfilled.
Worldliness
• It means that the things of this world,
attractions of the world like beauty, revenge,
love, power, wealth and love.
Is Satan a Renaissance Man?
• Satan is not a human character, but a lot of
the things he says and does make him
resemble a Renaissance Man, such as his
emphasis on his own wisdom and his
achievements.
John Milton &
Paradise Lost
• John Milton wrote his famous epic poem
Paradise Lost at the end of Renaissance
Age. Published in 1667, consisting of 10
books. It is considered the most famous
writing of English Literature.
• Writing in English, Latin, Greek, and Italian,
John Milton achieved international renown
within his lifetime.
• His desire for freedom extended into his
style: he introduced new words (coined
from Latin) to the English language, and
was the first modern writer to employ non-
rhymed verse outside of the theatre or
translations.
• The poem concerns the biblical story of
the Fall of Man: the temptation of Adam
and Eve by the fallen angel Satan and
their expulsion from the Garden of Eden.
• Paradise Lost shows the art of God upon
humanity and angels. The spirit by which
Milton worked in the poem and what he
exerted by the characters was of
Renaissance and the spirit of Reformation.
Satan
• Satan, formerly called Lucifer, is the major
character. He was once the most beautiful
of all angels, and is a tragic figure who
famously declares: "Better to reign in Hell
than serve in Heaven." Satan is deeply
arrogant, albeit powerful and charismatic.
• According to William McCollom, one quality
of the classical tragic hero is that he is not
perfectly good and that his defeat is caused
by a tragic flaw, as Satan causes both the
downfall of man and the eternal damnation
of his fellow fallen angels despite his
dedication to his comrades. In addition,
Satan's Hellenic qualities, such as his
immense courage and, perhaps, lack of
completely defined morals compound his
tragic nature.
Comparison b/w the Characteristics
of Renaissance Age and Satan:
• Characteristics of Renaissance Age:
• The chief characteristic of the Renaissance was
it’s emphasis on Humanism.
• Glorify human elements in man opposed to
supernatural or divine power.
• To produce civilized men.
• Emphasise given to worth
of an individual.
• Dignity of man.
• Emphasise on reasoning and logical thinking.
• Focus on supernaturalism shifted to naturalism.
• Importance given to imagination i.e: Ideal image
of something.
• Curiosity and Objectivity.
• Individualism.
Characteristics of Satan:
• The main emphasis of Satan was on Angel’s
freedom.
• By opposing divinity.
• To create a non-inherited government.
• To prove they had separate power.
• Show dignity of angels.
• Emphasise on reasoning and logical thinking
against the Godaffairs.
• Stand forth the divine legacy.
• Create an ideal conception of divine
establishment.
• Curiosity and Objectivity.
Individualism:
• Focus on God’s favourite creation;
Human beings.
• To lead humanity against God’s will.
