1. ‘Nirmal Jal Swasth Kal’
Our story of change from Oakridge International School, Hyderabad.
Mentor Teachers : Mrs.Mohseena Hussain and Mr.Samuel Osmond
STEP 1: FEEL
One of the biggest challenges facing India today is providing basic amenities to people especially those living below the poverty line.
We observed that the residents of our neighbouring village Khajaguda did not have a proper source of drinking water and most of them especially the children were victims of water borne diseases.
We conducted a survey in the village and with the help of the village sarpanch identified 100 families who were falling in the low income category group.
We had discussions with our mentor teachers and our Principal to raise funds for this good cause of providing safe drinking water.
STEP 2: IMAGINE
We decided on holding a bake sale in our school premises during our ‘treasure Fest’ programme. We organized stalls and sold cookies and snacks.
STEP 3: DO
We raised funds to the tune of 70,000/- thanks to the support of our management and our fellow students.
With the help of the school staff we procured water filters from a wholesale shop.
We organized a programme and invited all those beneficiaries whom we intended to distribute water filters. The smiles on their faces were testimony to the fact that we could actually do something to bring about a positive change in their lives. We intend to sustain this endeavor by providing maintenance of the filters for a period of two years.
STEP 4 : SHARE
It was a good learning experience for us and it taught us compassion and humility. We came to understand the importance of the many privileges that we enjoy and the joy of sharing some of them with the lesser privileged.
