5. What is a big bang
theory?
• How was our Universe created?
• How did it come to be the seemingly
infinite place we know of today?
• And what will become of it, ages from
now?
6. Nobody alive was there
to see this.
• You are under no
obligation to believe this
theory. It is simply one
possible explanation
among many possible
explanations for the
origins of the universe.
7. If you look up at the sky at
night, the heavens appear
to be unchanging. In 1917
Einstein wrote down the
theory of General Relativity.
His equations indicated
that the universe was
expanding and
decelerating. He believed
that the universe was
unchanging so he put in
the cosmological constant
to fix his equations.
8. In 1929 Edwin Hubble found that
galaxies are flying away from us in
every direction. The farther they
are, the faster they are receding.
This is evidence for the expansion of
the universe.
9. The Big Bang
Scientists now believe that the universe
began in a tremendous release of
energy known as the Big Bang. The
universe has been expanding ever since.
Evidence for this:
•Observation of galaxies flying away
from us in all directions (Hubble’s
observations).
10. Big Bang Theory
• Main Premise:
the universe began with a gigantic
explosion 10-29 billion years ago
nothing existed before this NO
time, NO space
out of nothingness came everything in
the universe and it started to expand
11. Where is Theory found?
Authored and thought of by
several scientists based on
work of Hubble’s red shift
12. Timeline:
• What we see around us (according
to the Big Bang theory)
1. Dime sized densely packed piece
of matter (containing all the
matter in the universe) appeared
out of the nothingness and
exploded
13. Timeline:
2. Expansion of the universe
during the first few seconds
after the big bang, cooled the
created matter enough for
protons, neutrons, and
electrons to form as free
particles, but not to
become stable atoms
14. Timeline:
3. After ~1million years the
expansion and cooling allowed
hydrogen to form
- now hydrogen is the most
abundant element in the known
universe
18. Timeline:
7. The future of the universe
- still expanding but for how long?
- gravity from all existing objects pulls against this
expansion
- 3 possible outcomes
1. Universe expands forever
2. Expansion will gradually slow down until a size limit is
reached
3. Expansion will stop and the universe will begin to
contract and fall in on itself Big Crunch
** Depends on the amount of matter in the
universe (and the mass)
19. Evidence:
Cosmic background radiation is
evidence used in support of the
theory
- faint radiation left over from the
explosion itself
Red shift of wavelengths of light
from distant galaxies
Expansion implies smaller in past
20. Problems / Issues /
Flaws with theory:
There was nothing, then there
was something. From where did it
come?
All matter in the universe in a
dime sized package
Outcomes? Which will happen?
21. Activity
• 1. What omnipotent power
created the universe? Is it te
same power that created me?
• 2. The God who created the
universe is the same God who
created me
22. Remember this…
• The God who created the
universe is the same God who
created me.
• I am part of the universe that God
created.
• The universe just came to be, it
was not created purposefully at
all.
23. Cont. of Remember this
• God created the universe for
me , and me for the universe.
• How the universe behave is like
how my body systems
functions.
• I ca detach myself from the
universe because it serves no
clear function for me
24. Cont. of remember this..
• Th universe is an orderly and
organized cluster of celestial
bodies just as my body is
systematic and structured
• Since it is the same God who
created me and the universe, ad
since the universe was created for
the same purpose that I was, the
universe and I are one
25. Reflect
“In the beginning was the word, and the word
was with God, and the word was God. The
same was in the beginning with God . All things
were made by Him, and without him was not
anything made that was made . In him was life,
and the life was the light of men” -- John 1: 1-4
(King James Bible)
“God does not play dice with the universe”
--- Albert Einstein 1879- 1955
Editor's Notes
According to the Big bang Theory , the universe was born due to an explosion of an immense dense matter about ten to twenty billion years ago. It is claimed that the explosion was also the birth of time , space , matter and energy.
The theory further claims that “everything that was there at the beginning “since that “bang” , everything also started to diverge as it rotated while cooling as it traveled. And then, there emerged life… and form … ever becoming more complex as time went by.
Discoveries during the twentieth century lead to the conclusion that there are pieces of evidence that support the Big Bang Theory .Works of Albert Einstein , Edwin Hubble, and some others in the field of science points to proof of the theory . However, some modern cosmologist have not accepted it. They raise questions like what was there before the explosion? Why did it take place?
