2. Jama Masjid (literally Friday Mosque), also
known as Jami or Jumma Mosque, is the
most splendid mosque ofAhmedabad.
Lying in the old walled city, the mosque is
situated outside Bhadra Fort area, along the
south side of the road extending from Teen
Darwaza to Manek Chowk
The Jama Masjid of Ahmedabad was probably
the largest mosque in the Indian subcontinent
built in this period.
5. STRUCTURE
Built with yellow sandstone, the mosque
complex is centered on a large rectangular
courtyard 75 m long and 66 m wide.

6. It has three gateways on north, west and south
side (gates at the middle of each wall) .
The courtyard is lined with a colonnade on
three sides, the prayer hall occupies the fourth
(east) side.
. The wide open courtyard, floored with white
marble, is ringed by a colonnade painted with
giant Arabic calligraphy, and has a tank in the
center of the courtyard for ritual ablutions .
8. . While the two principal minarets flanking the main
arched entrance way collapsed in the 1819
earthquake, their lower portions still stand.
The main prayer hall 210' X 95' has over 260
columns supporting the roof, with its 15 domes,
making a walk through the hall a beautiful maze of
light and shadows.
Two smaller archways are placed on either side of
the central one.
9. The central compartment of the nave rises up to 3
storeys, the side aisles are 2 storeys and the rest of
the hall is single storeyed.
10. There are various engravings
that were inscribed on the
pillars of the mosque while the
construction of the mosque .
‘Jalis’ or perforated stone
curtains in the middle of the two
columns of the main central
gateways.
The columns are symmetrically
arranged to form 15 bays
across the long axis of the hall .
The boundary of the prayer hall
is known as “Qibla” and is richly
ornated .
