A Lesson Before Dying
4. The novel A Lesson Before Dying is centered on a man who has no faith or real religious belief. His lack of interest in God or church greatly
affects his aunt and the Reverend, but as the novel progresses the reader in turn finds that the main character, Grant, does indeed acquire some sense of
religion in his own way. As the novel reaches its climax and Grant builds a stronger relationship with Jefferson he allows himself to have a limited
religion. Its "limited" in the sense that Jefferson is the one who inspired him to believe in something, but he refuses to believe in the same God that
those who convicted Jefferson believe in. The personal growth of not only...show more content...
The Reverend was able to use religion as his defense mechanism when going into battle against the white man's "justice". This system was one that
did not base the verdict on the situation but instead on those involved in the situation and how they looked. The Reverend Ambrose resolved this
situation by using religion to his advantage. Instead of choosing to worship a different God or in a different manner, he chose to freely believe in
God and encourage others to do so as well. In doing so he proved not to be inferior to the white man and by standing up to them became an example
for others to follow. Faith has become a nonā€“violent weapon for Africanā€“Americans because it allows for the community to come together as a whole
and show how powerful of a people they are in unison. By expressing their faith they are showing that they are not inferior to the white people and
that social equality may not be acceptable in the eyes of a white man, but religious equality is something that can be gained as more people become
active believers. The more Africanā€“American people become faithful the more united they will become allowing for them to overcome the racism they
are faced with.

A Lesson Before Dying Literary Analysis
Power and control plays a big role in the lives many. When power is used as a form of control, it leads to depression and misery in the relationship.
This is proven through the themes and symbolism used in the stories Lesson before Dying, The fun they had, The strangers that came to town, and
Dolls house through the median of three major unsuccessful relationship: racial tension between the African Americans and the caucasians in the novel
Lesson before Dying, Doll's House demonstrates a controlling relationship can be detrimental for both individuals and The Stranger That Came To
Town along with The Fun They Had show that when an individual is suppressed by majority they become despondent.
For starters, in the novel A Lesson Before...show more content...
The chair symbolizes how the Caucasians do not have anything to fear as they are inā€“control of everything that represents power and control in a
community (eg. jail, education, politics, policing, etc). Also, Pichot's Kitchen is used by Gaines to symbolise how power and control leads to
depression and misery in the relationship. As Wiggins goes to visit Pichot's, the owner of the plantation (he is caucasian), he is degraded as the
whites do not attend the meeting at the time they had set however they take their time to enjoy and finish their dinner and Wiggins is forced to wait
for them in the kitchen as he is black. This shows how he lives in a world where blacks are compelled to live by the rules and schedules of the white
people as Wiggins outlines the occurrence as so; "The humiliation I had to go through, going into that man's kitchen. The hours I had to wait while
they ate and drank" (Gaines 79). This quotation further proves that power and control leads to depression and misery in the relationship as the blacks
are miserable because of the oppressive nature of the whites.
The symbols used by Gaines help show how authority in a relationship, even in an as big system as communities, leads to sadness and hurt for the
controlled group. Nevertheless, A Lesson Before Dying is not the only piece of literature that has symbols that display that power leads to misery in a
relationship.

Analysis Of A Lesson Before Dying
December 18, 1865, marked the end of Africanā€“American slavery in America, whereā€“by black people gained more freedom in the land. However, a
power imbalance between the black and white is still present. A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines gives readers insight to the immense abuse
and hatred towards black people in the 1940s of America and furthers the reader's knowledge of black segregation and how the black people never
gave up for their freedom and rights. The novel's main plot follows Grant Wiggins, a young black man who was given the responsibility to make
Jefferson, a black man who was unjustifiably accused of murder and sentenced to death by electrocution become truly a man and not a "hog" which
is what the lawyer labeled Jefferson as. Throughout the novel, readers can recognize the great bond created as Grant encourages and aids Jefferson in
becoming a man before his "judgment day". Nevertheless, the novel was not only about Jefferson's lesson before his death, but it was a lesson for
many other characters in the novel. The most important lesson to learn before dying is the lesson of never give up, which can be seen through the
actions of Jefferson, Miss Emma, and Grant.
Throughout the novel, Jefferson exhibited various examples of never giving up. Shortly after his trial, Jefferson let the label of characterizing a hog,
take over his life. A memorable but heartbreaking moment of the novel for the readers was when Grant went to visit Jefferson alone for the

A Lesson Before Dying
Year: 1993
Title: A Lesson Before Dying The title of this novel "A Lesson Before Dying" is what the book's plot revolves around. Dying refers to Jefferson's
death, while the lesson refers to the lessons learnt by Jefferson, the white community, and Grant.
Lesson 1: The article 'a' means that there is one, single lesson that is being taught before someone's death, which is what the title really refers to in the
shallowest sense. This lesson talks about Grant (teacher), the protagonist, teaching Jefferson (student) how to die with dignity by teaching him: How To
Be a Man. The author chose this title to make the reader ā€“in the beginning of the novelā€“ anticipate that the only lesson that will be given is the one
taught by Grant and learnt by Jefferson. We expect the end result to be just that.
Lesson 2: By the end of the novel, we come to find that the lesson learned before Jefferson's death goes deeper than only him learning how to be a
man: You Never Know the Value Of What You Have Until You Lose It; when an individual dies, others begin to realise the true value that his/her life
had/may have potentially had. As a result of inequality and corruption in the judicial system, Jefferson's (now playing the role of the teacher) life is
sacrificed in order for the white people in the community (students) to gain a better understanding of the value of the black members of society (lesson).

Lesson Before Dying
The book that I have chosen out of the two books that I have read is The Road. I have read both A Lesson Before Dying and The Road had both
been interesting to read and are strong contenders to be in the top five for the list. I feel however, that A Lesson Before Dying doesn't have the
type of hook that could make young readers want to continue the book and finish it. The Road, however has an apocalyptic type of setting that
adds a sort of mystery and zombie feeling that young readers are usually interested in. The Road is also very easy to read and over a week or a few
days you can easily finish it and start on any other books or assignments. A Lesson Before Dying takes a while to get used to and although it can teach
you many things about...show more content...
There are parts in the book where the child shows how compassionate he is yet the man shows his resolve to survive in the cruel world that they
now live in. This is shown in this line "Can't we help him Papa? No. We can't help him. There's nothing to be done for him." This book also shows
the importance of having someone to care about due to the child keeping the man sane. A Lesson Before Dying has taught me about segregation in
the past and to not only become someone that I'm proud of, but someone that other people look up to. This was shown at this line from the book,
"I want you to show them the difference between what they think you are and what you can be." Both of the books had important messages and
really taught me a thing or two about life and how I should cherish it. This can lead me to recommending the book to my friends or family, just due
to the lessons that I have learned from them. The Road is both intriguing and easy to read, which can appeal to any age. A Lesson Before Dying
doesn't have the hook that I think that books need, however the lesson that I found from the book is very important and that other people should read
about it. I would also reccomend The Road to my friends that enjoy comics, due to the type of style that book is set in and how the story is similar to
many games that the young demographic

A Lesson Before Dying: An Analysis
Some things cannot happen in an instant. Some things take time to blossom and grow while others can happen in seconds. Changing personal beliefs
or the personality of a person themselves, is one of those that is a process of time. Time that is more detrimental than most of the characters may
realize. Throughout A Lesson Before Dying we see changes, whether they are in the form of structure, theme, or even characters, which is one of the
most prominent changes we see. Ernest J. Gaines created a story about Jefferson, a young "boy", who is sentenced to death for a crime he did not
commit. Who then can supposedly only become a "man" with the help of another "man". This "man" is Grant Wiggins, a teacher who is only trying to
help others but doesn't

A Fatalistic Predisposition before Settling In
In an 1973 interview conducted by Forrest Ingraham and Barbara Steinberg, Ernest J. Gaines states that although he is not devoutly religious, it is his
belief that "for you to survive, you must have something greater than what you are, whether it's religion or communism, or capitalism or something
else, but it must be something above what you are" (Gaines and Lowe 52). When applied to the narrator of his subsequent work, A Lesson Before Dying
, it would seem that this principle is reflected in the one thing Grant Wiggins initially holds above himself. I refer, of course, to Grant's anticipation of
the day that he will leave Bayonne in order to start a new life elsewhere, ideally in the company...show more content...
However, as Grant recounts the events of the trial in a degree of detail that suggests more than mere inference, this issue becomes more ambiguous.
From Grant's description of his aunt and Miss Emma's thoughts, perceptions and behavior in the courtroom, to his exacting portrayal of Jefferson's
story, including details as specific as the type of wine, "Apple White" (Gaines 4), which prompts the shooting, as recounted by Jefferson through Grant
in third person, to the roughly two pages of direct quotation that present the defense's closing arguments, we are left with such a complete account of
the trial that it is virtually impossible to believe Grant is not embellishing upon his own assumptions. Yet with the closing lines of this chapter, "Death
by electrocution. The governor would set the date" (Gaines 9), the credibility of Grant's implicit prediction is authenticated, leaving the reader with the
impression that since the conclusion implied at the beginning is valid, and since the premises seem plausible, that these premises must at least be
grounded in a degree of truth. From the outset, the marked tendency for Grant's prognostications to ultimately transpire

The Right to Be Free In the novel A Lesson Before Dying, although Grant is an educated black man in the era of a racist society he has struggles
greater than most men of his decent. I feel sorry for him because of his limitations, even though I view him as a coward. He cannot break free of his
background and family. The three main female characters in the novel, Tante Lou, Miss Emma, and Vivian, restrict and limitGrant's choices. Grant
realizes that freedom means leaving his small town and creating a new life, yet each woman holds a chain that keeps him from his destiny and the right
to be free. First, Tante Lou, his aunt holds Grant from his dreams by refusing to let him go his own way. Tante Lou wants Grant to stay

not looking at me, not looking at anything..just thinking. Like my Aunt she knew how much I hated all of this.(p.68) Miss Emma therefore forces
Grant to do matters that she wants, not what Grant thinks he is capable of doing. Thirdly, Vivian, the love of his life, is also limiting Grant's ability
to make decisions based strictly on his own intent. She understands Grant's need to leave and see new things, but has restrictions in her life that will
not allow her to help Grant begin a new existence. Vivian is in the middle of a drawn out divorce and needs to see it through so she can maintain
custody of her children. We see an example of this on page 93. Let's go somewhere and spend the night. Baton Rouge, New Orleansā€“ anywhere, Grant

are just a few. But, Grant is a complex character and can be depicted thoroughly. His education holds him

A Lesson Before Dying: A Short Story
No one ever told Adam his best friend was sent back into the brig. The cold, hard brig, where souls went to decay in agony. He only found out the
day afterwards. Lana was ordered to keep him occupied when it happened. He did not hear Murdoch's angry screams as he was forced into the pit of

When he learned from the ship's whispers, he threw a fit. He stormed into Torch's private quarters and demanded she release him. She stood up and

club, Grant eats a meal and convinces the waiter to lend him ten dollars for the radio. After,Grant arrives at the department store where he is hassled
to Buy the sale model for the radio by a white sales clerk. Grant does not give in and convinces her to get him a brand new radio. Shortly after grant

for his eventual change away from the bitterness and doubts. Without Miss Emma or Tante Lou, it seems natural to conclude that Grant would have

A Lesson Before Dying Essay
In Ernest J. Gaines novel A Lesson Before Dying, a young Africanā€“American, Jefferson, is caught in the middle of a liquor shootout, and as the only
survivor is convicted of murder and sentenced to death. During Jefferson's trial, his attorney calls him a hog in an effort to persuade the jury that he
could not have possibly planned a crime like this. Having heard this, Jefferson's godmother, Miss Emma, calls on the local school teacher, Grant
Wiggins, to visit Jefferson in prison and help prove to the community, more importantly the white people, that Jefferson is indeed a man, not a hog.
Throughout the book, Grant often contemplates why he is helping Miss Emma; he debates within himself whether he should stay and help Miss Emma

Despite this, Grant unwillingly agrees to help and begins visiting Jefferson in prison. After several visits and no progress, one night Grant talks with
Vivian and expresses to her that he is wasting his time and that they should escape this town together. However, nearing the end of the book, upon
buying Jefferson a radio, Grant realizes that he has been too focused on what he wants, and decides that contrary to what he believes he can help
Jefferson, and the town he lives in (Gaines 180). Because Grant has two equally compelling desires, although not compelling in the same way, to
choose between, the choice he does make is magnified because of the conflict within himself. This conflict not only helps reflect on Grant's
development as a character, but even more stresses the books theme of assuming responsibility. Through Grant's actions it is easy to see he is not
comfortable with his life. He lives in a small, racially discriminated and prejudiced town, and is a college educated man treated like a man who hasn't
finished elementary school. Adding Jefferson's situation on top of all that, it is easy to see how Grant desires to simply give up and run away with the
love of his life, Vivian. But Grant realizes that the issues at hand are bigger than just him; the way Jefferson dies will have a lasting impact, much like
Christ's crucifixion, on the local community. He understands that the dignity Jefferson shows in

A Lesson Before Dying
I read a historical fiction novel about racism called A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines. Gaines was a was an African American man who
was born in 1933 and grew up on a plantation in Louisiana. He earned 50 cents a day picking potatoes at the age of nine. By the age of 15, he
moved to California with his aunt and that's when his passion for reading grew stronger. Disappointed to find that none of the books he read had
nothing to do with the world he knew, he decided to write some stories himself (Magnier). Therefore, the main themes of his works come from his
childhood. His first few famous novels were published around the 1970's: Of Love and Dust (1967) and The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman
(1971); Gaines received the U.S. National Book Award for A Lesson before Dying in 1994. The purpose of this book is to show people how it felt to be
put in the shoes of a black man in the southern states of America in the 1940's. This book was and is popular among mostly...show more content...
I thought it was a very good book and it taught me a lot about what people went through a long time ago. The characterization was excellent, I felt
like I knew the characters extremely well and could tell what they were all thinking. The characters also fit the story completely and made it
interesting, there were conflicts between characters and also conflicts between a character and himself. The plot was also very good because it not
only showed me what times were like back in the day, but it also taught me an important lesson (hence the title of this paper) that applies to today's
society. The plot was fluid and played out nicely throughout the entire book, even during the chapter dedicated to "Jefferson's diary". In its entirety,
the book made me realize how much our society has changed for the better and how progress does not always have a negative impact on the

God can only guide, but it us who decide what we are known by in society. "You do not need super powers to be a Superhero... Heroes are made not

can completely change their life. This idea is illustrated in "A Lesson Before Dying" by Ernest J. Gaines. Grant Wiggins, Jefferson, and Paul, three of
Gaines characters that profited, exemplified, and comprehended the most essential lesson before dying. Each of us has been made by God with
potential to be incredible, and to help other people achieve enormity.

Paul tries to befriend Grant after his visits with Jefferson and Jefferson's execution. Paul said to Grant "'Allow [us] to be friend[s], Grant Wiggins.
[Paul] don't ever want to forget this day. [Paul] don't ever want to forget him'" (Gaines 255). Paul was attempting to be sympathetic to Grant
preceding the execution because he realized the hardships blacks in South faced as a result of racial prejudice and injustice. Paul felt as though it
was his duty to stand up for the blacks of South as a white person, however he could not do it. As many other white people in the novel, Paul realized,
like the others, the most important lesson before dying which that everybody, black or white, has the potential to do great things. Jefferson was one of
those people who EDIT with what he said but showed his greatness by his actions. Jefferson walked up to that electric chair like a man with all the
strength in the world. Paul realized this is because he told Grant that "[Jefferson] was the strongest man in that crowded room ... Straight [Jefferson]
walked. [Paul is] a witness. Straight [Jefferson] walked'" (Gaines 253ā€“251). Consequently, Paul is another character that realized the most important

The ending of A Lesson Before Dying gives the reader a sense of despair and then portrays a sense of optimism. Gaines' writing is unique because the
reader feels this hope for the future and optimism without Gaines having to say it. Instead, he wrote about the execution and the hope was picked up
from the "little things." At the reader feels disappointed because Jefferson has died. The optimism comes into play throughGrant and the fact that he
has learned his lesson(s) from Jefferson. It is also uplifting because Jefferson has died with dignity on the day meant for him. I think that Gaines also
throws a curve in at the end through the character of Paul whose purpose seems to stress the hope for the future of Blacks in a white society....show

"It was a nice day. Blue sky. Not a cloud." (p.247). Grant was describing the setting for the day of the execution. A man, wronglyaccused and wrongly
sentenced, was going to die on the perfect day. This quote, though not significant to any other part of the novel, stood out to me because it showed
hope for the day. It created a sense of happiness and calmness on an otherwise horrific event.
Another thing also stood out to me, similar to the previous quote. "Yes I told myself. It is finally over. I stood up and stretched and looked across
the highway at the river, so tranquil, its water as blue as the sky. The willows near the edge of the water were just as still, and no breeze stirred the
Spanish moss that hung from the cypresses." Grant's reflection on the atmosphere after the death of Jefferson creates a sense of perfect harmony
within the little town that was in commotion just a few hours before. The river was perfect, and the willows did not move out of respect for the dead.
This quote is a perfect example of how a novel is not just about the main story, but also about the little things that make a big impression.
I think the previous two quotes also stand out for another reason. Not only is the setting tranquil on the day Jefferson dies, but it also seems to
counterpart the dignity Jefferson had accepting his death. It is as if the even the earth is walking with him because he has grown that

Lesson Before Dying
In the film A Lesson Before Dying the young African American Jefferson was accused of murdering three innocent men. During the court trial
Jefferson's attorney called him a "hog". In "If We Must Die" by Claude McKay's poem has a strong message about Racism, Pride, and the struggles
of being an african american in the United States. I believe that Jefferson is not a hog, should get treated fairly, and should not have suffered for
something he did not do. The Poem If We Must Die by McKay is similar to the film A Lesson Before Dying because I believe Jefferson is not a
hog. In the poem McKay states "If we must die, let us not be like hogs/ Hunted and penned in an inglorious spot,/ While round us bark the mad and
hungry dogs". This ties into the film by saying "If we must die, let us not be like hogs". When Jefferson was called a "hog", he started to come to
the conclusion that he was a hog, when Grant brought him candy from Miss Emma, he threw it on the ground, got down on his hands and knees and
starting acting like a hog. Jefferson gets up and says "That's what I am! That's what they say I am! So that's what I'll be, like a hog, they can drag me

Analysis of A Lesson Before Dying Essay
Grant Wiggins is the narrator of the novel. He was born in the plantation just outside of Bayonne, Louisiana. He lived there until he went away to
college, and when he went back home, he was detached from the people in the town because of his education and different religious beliefs. He is
easily angered and often very selfish. This is seen in the way that he acts towards Vivian. He consistently does not give her the attention or respect
that she deserves. He refers to her children as simply, "the babies," and only cares about the names of his and Vivian's future children. Grant goes from
shallow and selfish at the beginning of the story, to caring and loving at the end. Jefferson is an honest, young black man with belowā€“average...show

Although she wants Jefferson to die as a man, she does not seem to try to make him a man, as Grant does. Vivian is Grant's beautiful, passionate, and
smart girlfriend. She teaches at a black Catholic school in Bayonne. During the book she is married, but separated from her husband, so her
relationship with Grant is kept a secret. She has two small children with her husband. Vivian loves Grant but often distrusts him because of his lack of
loyalty to his people and hometown. Sheriff Sam Guidry is both a white supremacist and a decent man. At the beginning of the novel he is ignorant
and extremely racist towards Grant and Jefferson. He views black people as unintelligent, but when changes start to show in both Jefferson and Grant,
he learns otherwise. By the end of the novel, he is nice to Jefferson, and allows more visiting sessions for longer amounts of time. He starts to show
signs of respect and compassion to Jefferson.
Main Setting The book takes place in the 1940s in mostly the plantation outside of Bayonne, Louisiana, and parts of the book take place in Bayonne,
Louisiana. Bayonne is a larger town of about six thousand with all services and buildings for whites uptown, and all those for blacks in the back of
town. There were schools, movie theaters, and nightclubs in both the white and black sides of town, but the

A Lesson Before Dying Rhetorical Analysis
"A Lesson Before Dying" is a novel that depicts racism, inā€“justice and sacrifice all through the perspective of a black male. Gaines does a great job of
making the reader feel like they are watching all this unfold in real life. One of the reasons why Gaines was able to tell this story so well because of
his own personal experiences, similar to the ones in "A Lesson Before Dying" making the his story seem sincere. Gaines makes effective use of Ethos,
Pathos, and Logos, the three appeals of rhetoric. Gaines establishes his ethos by showing how unā€“just the verdict was on Jefferson. Grant argues that
Jefferson doesn't have the intelligence to pull off such a scheme "Gentlemen of the jury. Look at the shape of this skull, this face as flat as

Essay On A Lesson Before Dying

  • 1. Essay on A Lesson Before Dying Erika Seda AP English 2 February 2012 A Lesson Before Dying 4. The novel A Lesson Before Dying is centered on a man who has no faith or real religious belief. His lack of interest in God or church greatly affects his aunt and the Reverend, but as the novel progresses the reader in turn finds that the main character, Grant, does indeed acquire some sense of religion in his own way. As the novel reaches its climax and Grant builds a stronger relationship with Jefferson he allows himself to have a limited religion. Its "limited" in the sense that Jefferson is the one who inspired him to believe in something, but he refuses to believe in the same God that those who convicted Jefferson believe in. The personal growth of not only...show more content... The Reverend was able to use religion as his defense mechanism when going into battle against the white man's "justice". This system was one that did not base the verdict on the situation but instead on those involved in the situation and how they looked. The Reverend Ambrose resolved this situation by using religion to his advantage. Instead of choosing to worship a different God or in a different manner, he chose to freely believe in God and encourage others to do so as well. In doing so he proved not to be inferior to the white man and by standing up to them became an example for others to follow. Faith has become a nonā€“violent weapon for Africanā€“Americans because it allows for the community to come together as a whole and show how powerful of a people they are in unison. By expressing their faith they are showing that they are not inferior to the white people and that social equality may not be acceptable in the eyes of a white man, but religious equality is something that can be gained as more people become active believers. The more Africanā€“American people become faithful the more united they will become allowing for them to overcome the racism they are faced with. 8. A Lesson Before Dying follows the life of a man who is at first obligated by his aunt to frequently visit a man facing execution. This obligation starts off as a nuisance and turns into a Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. A Lesson Before Dying Literary Analysis Power and control plays a big role in the lives many. When power is used as a form of control, it leads to depression and misery in the relationship. This is proven through the themes and symbolism used in the stories Lesson before Dying, The fun they had, The strangers that came to town, and Dolls house through the median of three major unsuccessful relationship: racial tension between the African Americans and the caucasians in the novel Lesson before Dying, Doll's House demonstrates a controlling relationship can be detrimental for both individuals and The Stranger That Came To Town along with The Fun They Had show that when an individual is suppressed by majority they become despondent. For starters, in the novel A Lesson Before...show more content... The chair symbolizes how the Caucasians do not have anything to fear as they are inā€“control of everything that represents power and control in a community (eg. jail, education, politics, policing, etc). Also, Pichot's Kitchen is used by Gaines to symbolise how power and control leads to depression and misery in the relationship. As Wiggins goes to visit Pichot's, the owner of the plantation (he is caucasian), he is degraded as the whites do not attend the meeting at the time they had set however they take their time to enjoy and finish their dinner and Wiggins is forced to wait for them in the kitchen as he is black. This shows how he lives in a world where blacks are compelled to live by the rules and schedules of the white people as Wiggins outlines the occurrence as so; "The humiliation I had to go through, going into that man's kitchen. The hours I had to wait while they ate and drank" (Gaines 79). This quotation further proves that power and control leads to depression and misery in the relationship as the blacks are miserable because of the oppressive nature of the whites. The symbols used by Gaines help show how authority in a relationship, even in an as big system as communities, leads to sadness and hurt for the controlled group. Nevertheless, A Lesson Before Dying is not the only piece of literature that has symbols that display that power leads to misery in a relationship. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Analysis Of A Lesson Before Dying December 18, 1865, marked the end of Africanā€“American slavery in America, whereā€“by black people gained more freedom in the land. However, a power imbalance between the black and white is still present. A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines gives readers insight to the immense abuse and hatred towards black people in the 1940s of America and furthers the reader's knowledge of black segregation and how the black people never gave up for their freedom and rights. The novel's main plot follows Grant Wiggins, a young black man who was given the responsibility to make Jefferson, a black man who was unjustifiably accused of murder and sentenced to death by electrocution become truly a man and not a "hog" which is what the lawyer labeled Jefferson as. Throughout the novel, readers can recognize the great bond created as Grant encourages and aids Jefferson in becoming a man before his "judgment day". Nevertheless, the novel was not only about Jefferson's lesson before his death, but it was a lesson for many other characters in the novel. The most important lesson to learn before dying is the lesson of never give up, which can be seen through the actions of Jefferson, Miss Emma, and Grant. Throughout the novel, Jefferson exhibited various examples of never giving up. Shortly after his trial, Jefferson let the label of characterizing a hog, take over his life. A memorable but heartbreaking moment of the novel for the readers was when Grant went to visit Jefferson alone for the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Summary Of ' A Lesson Before Dying ' Alia F. AlKhairiŠ²Š‚ŠNolan AP English Lit. Š²Š‚Š4 September, 2015 A Lesson Before Dying Year: 1993 Title: A Lesson Before Dying The title of this novel "A Lesson Before Dying" is what the book's plot revolves around. Dying refers to Jefferson's death, while the lesson refers to the lessons learnt by Jefferson, the white community, and Grant. Lesson 1: The article 'a' means that there is one, single lesson that is being taught before someone's death, which is what the title really refers to in the shallowest sense. This lesson talks about Grant (teacher), the protagonist, teaching Jefferson (student) how to die with dignity by teaching him: How To Be a Man. The author chose this title to make the reader ā€“in the beginning of the novelā€“ anticipate that the only lesson that will be given is the one taught by Grant and learnt by Jefferson. We expect the end result to be just that. Lesson 2: By the end of the novel, we come to find that the lesson learned before Jefferson's death goes deeper than only him learning how to be a man: You Never Know the Value Of What You Have Until You Lose It; when an individual dies, others begin to realise the true value that his/her life had/may have potentially had. As a result of inequality and corruption in the judicial system, Jefferson's (now playing the role of the teacher) life is sacrificed in order for the white people in the community (students) to gain a better understanding of the value of the black members of society (lesson). • 5. Lesson Before Dying The book that I have chosen out of the two books that I have read is The Road. I have read both A Lesson Before Dying and The Road had both been interesting to read and are strong contenders to be in the top five for the list. I feel however, that A Lesson Before Dying doesn't have the type of hook that could make young readers want to continue the book and finish it. The Road, however has an apocalyptic type of setting that adds a sort of mystery and zombie feeling that young readers are usually interested in. The Road is also very easy to read and over a week or a few days you can easily finish it and start on any other books or assignments. A Lesson Before Dying takes a while to get used to and although it can teach you many things about...show more content... There are parts in the book where the child shows how compassionate he is yet the man shows his resolve to survive in the cruel world that they now live in. This is shown in this line "Can't we help him Papa? No. We can't help him. There's nothing to be done for him." This book also shows the importance of having someone to care about due to the child keeping the man sane. A Lesson Before Dying has taught me about segregation in the past and to not only become someone that I'm proud of, but someone that other people look up to. This was shown at this line from the book, "I want you to show them the difference between what they think you are and what you can be." Both of the books had important messages and really taught me a thing or two about life and how I should cherish it. This can lead me to recommending the book to my friends or family, just due to the lessons that I have learned from them. The Road is both intriguing and easy to read, which can appeal to any age. A Lesson Before Dying doesn't have the hook that I think that books need, however the lesson that I found from the book is very important and that other people should read about it. I would also reccomend The Road to my friends that enjoy comics, due to the type of style that book is set in and how the story is similar to many games that the young demographic Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. A Lesson Before Dying: An Analysis Some things cannot happen in an instant. Some things take time to blossom and grow while others can happen in seconds. Changing personal beliefs or the personality of a person themselves, is one of those that is a process of time. Time that is more detrimental than most of the characters may realize. Throughout A Lesson Before Dying we see changes, whether they are in the form of structure, theme, or even characters, which is one of the most prominent changes we see. Ernest J. Gaines created a story about Jefferson, a young "boy", who is sentenced to death for a crime he did not commit. Who then can supposedly only become a "man" with the help of another "man". This "man" is Grant Wiggins, a teacher who is only trying to help others but doesn't Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. A Fatalistic Predisposition before Settling In In an 1973 interview conducted by Forrest Ingraham and Barbara Steinberg, Ernest J. Gaines states that although he is not devoutly religious, it is his belief that "for you to survive, you must have something greater than what you are, whether it's religion or communism, or capitalism or something else, but it must be something above what you are" (Gaines and Lowe 52). When applied to the narrator of his subsequent work, A Lesson Before Dying , it would seem that this principle is reflected in the one thing Grant Wiggins initially holds above himself. I refer, of course, to Grant's anticipation of the day that he will leave Bayonne in order to start a new life elsewhere, ideally in the company...show more content... However, as Grant recounts the events of the trial in a degree of detail that suggests more than mere inference, this issue becomes more ambiguous. From Grant's description of his aunt and Miss Emma's thoughts, perceptions and behavior in the courtroom, to his exacting portrayal of Jefferson's story, including details as specific as the type of wine, "Apple White" (Gaines 4), which prompts the shooting, as recounted by Jefferson through Grant in third person, to the roughly two pages of direct quotation that present the defense's closing arguments, we are left with such a complete account of the trial that it is virtually impossible to believe Grant is not embellishing upon his own assumptions. Yet with the closing lines of this chapter, "Death by electrocution. The governor would set the date" (Gaines 9), the credibility of Grant's implicit prediction is authenticated, leaving the reader with the impression that since the conclusion implied at the beginning is valid, and since the premises seem plausible, that these premises must at least be grounded in a degree of truth. From the outset, the marked tendency for Grant's prognostications to ultimately transpire Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Essay about a lesson before dying Lesson Before Dying The Right to Be Free In the novel A Lesson Before Dying, although Grant is an educated black man in the era of a racist society he has struggles greater than most men of his decent. I feel sorry for him because of his limitations, even though I view him as a coward. He cannot break free of his background and family. The three main female characters in the novel, Tante Lou, Miss Emma, and Vivian, restrict and limitGrant's choices. Grant realizes that freedom means leaving his small town and creating a new life, yet each woman holds a chain that keeps him from his destiny and the right to be free. First, Tante Lou, his aunt holds Grant from his dreams by refusing to let him go his own way. Tante Lou wants Grant to stay ...show more content... Leaning on her ability to persuade, and using her power as an extensive friend to Tante Lou she can basically tell Grant what to do and gets away with it. She knew Grant did not want to go and teach Jefferson, but still went ahead with it. Driving along the St. Charles River I could feel Emma not looking at me, not looking at anything..just thinking. Like my Aunt she knew how much I hated all of this.(p.68) Miss Emma therefore forces Grant to do matters that she wants, not what Grant thinks he is capable of doing. Thirdly, Vivian, the love of his life, is also limiting Grant's ability to make decisions based strictly on his own intent. She understands Grant's need to leave and see new things, but has restrictions in her life that will not allow her to help Grant begin a new existence. Vivian is in the middle of a drawn out divorce and needs to see it through so she can maintain custody of her children. We see an example of this on page 93. Let's go somewhere and spend the night. Baton Rouge, New Orleansā€“ anywhere, Grant asks. I can't, My Babies. This sentence alone describes the turmoil she is going through with her own threatening aspects and how it effects Grant's choices. I think the book is an intriguing novel and surfaced important issues dealt with in society. Religion, racism, and many other articles of today are just a few. But, Grant is a complex character and can be depicted thoroughly. His education holds him Get more content on HelpWriting.net

He did not hear Murdoch's angry screams as he was forced into the pit of the ship with all other unfortunate souls sentenced to the dark, wet Hell. The prison guard Paul searches grant uneasily knowing that he is friendly and safe. Paul has to search grant anyways because of fear of being caught for doing the wrong thing. Progress continues as Grant continues to visit Jefferson more and more. The two men become friendlier to each other and begin to have small talk about various subjects. The thing they discuss the most is Ice cream, Jefferson says how he wants his last meal to be a gallon of vanilla ice cream. Jefferson also accepts Grants offer to buy him a small radio for his cell. After the visit with Jefferson, Grant drives to TheRainbow Club. At the club, Grant eats a meal and convinces the waiter to lend him ten dollars for the radio. After,Grant arrives at the department store where he is hassled to Buy the sale model for the radio by a white sales clerk. Grant does not give in and convinces her to get him a brand new radio. Without Miss Emma or Tante Lou, it seems natural to conclude that Grant would have stagnated in his despair and spent his life feeling angry and irritable. However, since Emma and Tante Lou force Grant to go visit Jefferson and keep him motivated to stick with the task they've assigned him, they can be said to be the real force in the novelā€“rather than Grant. • 12. A Lesson Before Dying Essay In Ernest J. Gaines novel A Lesson Before Dying, a young Africanā€“American, Jefferson, is caught in the middle of a liquor shootout, and as the only survivor is convicted of murder and sentenced to death. During Jefferson's trial, his attorney calls him a hog in an effort to persuade the jury that he could not have possibly planned a crime like this. Having heard this, Jefferson's godmother, Miss Emma, calls on the local school teacher, Grant Wiggins, to visit Jefferson in prison and help prove to the community, more importantly the white people, that Jefferson is indeed a man, not a hog. Throughout the book, Grant often contemplates why he is helping Miss Emma; he debates within himself whether he should stay and help Miss Emma and...show more content... Despite this, Grant unwillingly agrees to help and begins visiting Jefferson in prison. After several visits and no progress, one night Grant talks with Vivian and expresses to her that he is wasting his time and that they should escape this town together. However, nearing the end of the book, upon buying Jefferson a radio, Grant realizes that he has been too focused on what he wants, and decides that contrary to what he believes he can help Jefferson, and the town he lives in (Gaines 180). Because Grant has two equally compelling desires, although not compelling in the same way, to choose between, the choice he does make is magnified because of the conflict within himself. This conflict not only helps reflect on Grant's development as a character, but even more stresses the books theme of assuming responsibility. Through Grant's actions it is easy to see he is not comfortable with his life. He lives in a small, racially discriminated and prejudiced town, and is a college educated man treated like a man who hasn't finished elementary school. Adding Jefferson's situation on top of all that, it is easy to see how Grant desires to simply give up and run away with the love of his life, Vivian. But Grant realizes that the issues at hand are bigger than just him; the way Jefferson dies will have a lasting impact, much like Christ's crucifixion, on the local community. He understands that the dignity Jefferson shows in Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. A Lesson Before Dying I read a historical fiction novel about racism called A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines. Gaines was a was an African American man who was born in 1933 and grew up on a plantation in Louisiana. He earned 50 cents a day picking potatoes at the age of nine. By the age of 15, he moved to California with his aunt and that's when his passion for reading grew stronger. Disappointed to find that none of the books he read had nothing to do with the world he knew, he decided to write some stories himself (Magnier). Therefore, the main themes of his works come from his childhood. His first few famous novels were published around the 1970's: Of Love and Dust (1967) and The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman (1971); Gaines received the U.S. National Book Award for A Lesson before Dying in 1994. The purpose of this book is to show people how it felt to be put in the shoes of a black man in the southern states of America in the 1940's. This book was and is popular among mostly...show more content... I thought it was a very good book and it taught me a lot about what people went through a long time ago. The characterization was excellent, I felt like I knew the characters extremely well and could tell what they were all thinking. The characters also fit the story completely and made it interesting, there were conflicts between characters and also conflicts between a character and himself. The plot was also very good because it not only showed me what times were like back in the day, but it also taught me an important lesson (hence the title of this paper) that applies to today's society. The plot was fluid and played out nicely throughout the entire book, even during the chapter dedicated to "Jefferson's diary". In its entirety, the book made me realize how much our society has changed for the better and how progress does not always have a negative impact on the Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Paul was attempting to be sympathetic to Grant preceding the execution because he realized the hardships blacks in South faced as a result of racial prejudice and injustice. Paul felt as though it was his duty to stand up for the blacks of South as a white person, however he could not do it. As many other white people in the novel, Paul realized, like the others, the most important lesson before dying which that everybody, black or white, has the potential to do great things. Jefferson was one of those people who EDIT with what he said but showed his greatness by his actions. Jefferson walked up to that electric chair like a man with all the strength in the world. Paul realized this is because he told Grant that "[Jefferson] was the strongest man in that crowded room ... Straight [Jefferson] walked. [Paul is] a witness. Straight [Jefferson] walked'" (Gaines 253ā€“251). Consequently, Paul is another character that realized the most important lesson before Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Lesson Before Dying Essay The ending of A Lesson Before Dying gives the reader a sense of despair and then portrays a sense of optimism. Gaines' writing is unique because the reader feels this hope for the future and optimism without Gaines having to say it. Instead, he wrote about the execution and the hope was picked up from the "little things." At the reader feels disappointed because Jefferson has died. The optimism comes into play throughGrant and the fact that he has learned his lesson(s) from Jefferson. It is also uplifting because Jefferson has died with dignity on the day meant for him. I think that Gaines also throws a curve in at the end through the character of Paul whose purpose seems to stress the hope for the future of Blacks in a white society....show more content... "It was a nice day. Blue sky. Not a cloud." (p.247). Grant was describing the setting for the day of the execution. A man, wronglyaccused and wrongly sentenced, was going to die on the perfect day. This quote, though not significant to any other part of the novel, stood out to me because it showed hope for the day. It created a sense of happiness and calmness on an otherwise horrific event. Another thing also stood out to me, similar to the previous quote. "Yes I told myself. It is finally over. I stood up and stretched and looked across the highway at the river, so tranquil, its water as blue as the sky. The willows near the edge of the water were just as still, and no breeze stirred the Spanish moss that hung from the cypresses." Grant's reflection on the atmosphere after the death of Jefferson creates a sense of perfect harmony within the little town that was in commotion just a few hours before. The river was perfect, and the willows did not move out of respect for the dead. This quote is a perfect example of how a novel is not just about the main story, but also about the little things that make a big impression. I think the previous two quotes also stand out for another reason. Not only is the setting tranquil on the day Jefferson dies, but it also seems to counterpart the dignity Jefferson had accepting his death. It is as if the even the earth is walking with him because he has grown that Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. Lesson Before Dying In the film A Lesson Before Dying the young African American Jefferson was accused of murdering three innocent men. During the court trial Jefferson's attorney called him a "hog". In "If We Must Die" by Claude McKay's poem has a strong message about Racism, Pride, and the struggles of being an african american in the United States. I believe that Jefferson is not a hog, should get treated fairly, and should not have suffered for something he did not do. The Poem If We Must Die by McKay is similar to the film A Lesson Before Dying because I believe Jefferson is not a hog. In the poem McKay states "If we must die, let us not be like hogs/ Hunted and penned in an inglorious spot,/ While round us bark the mad and hungry dogs". This ties into the film by saying "If we must die, let us not be like hogs". When Jefferson was called a "hog", he started to come to the conclusion that he was a hog, when Grant brought him candy from Miss Emma, he threw it on the ground, got down on his hands and knees and starting acting like a hog. Jefferson gets up and says "That's what I am! That's what they say I am! So that's what I'll be, like a hog, they can drag me to that chair! I ain't walking!"...show more content... • 17. Analysis of A Lesson Before Dying Essay Grant Wiggins is the narrator of the novel. He was born in the plantation just outside of Bayonne, Louisiana. He lived there until he went away to college, and when he went back home, he was detached from the people in the town because of his education and different religious beliefs. He is easily angered and often very selfish. This is seen in the way that he acts towards Vivian. He consistently does not give her the attention or respect that she deserves. He refers to her children as simply, "the babies," and only cares about the names of his and Vivian's future children. Grant goes from shallow and selfish at the beginning of the story, to caring and loving at the end. Jefferson is an honest, young black man with belowā€“average...show more content... Although she wants Jefferson to die as a man, she does not seem to try to make him a man, as Grant does. Vivian is Grant's beautiful, passionate, and smart girlfriend. She teaches at a black Catholic school in Bayonne. During the book she is married, but separated from her husband, so her relationship with Grant is kept a secret. She has two small children with her husband. Vivian loves Grant but often distrusts him because of his lack of loyalty to his people and hometown. Sheriff Sam Guidry is both a white supremacist and a decent man. At the beginning of the novel he is ignorant and extremely racist towards Grant and Jefferson. He views black people as unintelligent, but when changes start to show in both Jefferson and Grant, he learns otherwise. By the end of the novel, he is nice to Jefferson, and allows more visiting sessions for longer amounts of time. He starts to show signs of respect and compassion to Jefferson. Main Setting The book takes place in the 1940s in mostly the plantation outside of Bayonne, Louisiana, and parts of the book take place in Bayonne, Louisiana. Bayonne is a larger town of about six thousand with all services and buildings for whites uptown, and all those for blacks in the back of town. There were schools, movie theaters, and nightclubs in both the white and black sides of town, but the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. A Lesson Before Dying Rhetorical Analysis "A Lesson Before Dying" is a novel that depicts racism, inā€“justice and sacrifice all through the perspective of a black male. Gaines does a great job of making the reader feel like they are watching all this unfold in real life. One of the reasons why Gaines was able to tell this story so well because of his own personal experiences, similar to the ones in "A Lesson Before Dying" making the his story seem sincere. Gaines makes effective use of Ethos, Pathos, and Logos, the three appeals of rhetoric. Gaines establishes his ethos by showing how unā€“just the verdict was on Jefferson. Grant argues that Jefferson doesn't have the intelligence to pull off such a scheme "Gentlemen of the jury. Look at the shape of this skull, this face as flat as Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Lessons Before Dying Lesson Some of the similarities between a Lesson Before Dying and Making a Murderer are that Jefferson and Steven Avery were both accused of the same crime, both were in the wrong place at the wrong time, and they were both innocent. First, in a lesson Before Dying Jefferson was accused of murdering Bear, Brother and Mr.Grope. In Making a Murderer Steven Avery was accused of murdering Teresa Halbach. Secondly,In a Lesson Before Dying jefferson was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
