Death Penalty or Life in Prison
Death Penalty I began my research by looking into the death penalty or also known as capital punishment. The death penalty is the action of executing
a person who has committed an illegal act equivalent to death. Crimes punishable by death vary depending on the state; some include murder, sexual
assault, treason, and other serious capital crimes ("Crimes Punishable", 2011). There are many different outlooks on the death penalty; some in favor
of the death penalty believe it is the ultimate balance between good and evil and they often use the phrase, "an eye, for an eye." By using death as
punishment they can assure society...show more content...
Life in Prison
I continue my research on the effects of life in prison opposed to the death penalty. Life imprisonment is any sentence for serious crimes that
insures the offender spends life equivalency in prison or at least until parole. In a lot of cases when an offender is sentenced to life in prison they
don't get the advantage of parole. No one ever sentenced to life without parole has ever been released, they spend the rest of their lives in prison
and they usually die of natural causes (Wilbur, 2012). The advantages of life imprisonment are few but worth looking over, for example it saves an
abundant amount of money. It costs tax payers $90,000 more per prisoner each year for inmates on death row then they pay for the general prison
population. Also it saves many innocent lives of those who were wrongly accused. "More than 200 innocent men and women have been freed from
prison in California after it was discovered that they were wrongfully convicted; three of them were sentenced to die for crimes they did not commit"
("The Truth," n.d.).
The disadvantages of spending life in prison are serious and dangerous. Prisons all over the country are becoming very overpopulated, causing less aid
for each inmate. Inmates sentenced to death in prison receive less access to programs and no special treatment unlike other prisoners ("The Truth,"
n.d.). Prison aren't pleasant, someone convicted

What Is Life In Prison
The Death Penalty Orlando Hall was a death row prisoner in Texas 2007 for abducting, raping, beating, and murdering a 16 year old girl. What would
the most reasonable consequence be? Life in prison or the death penalty? The death penalty might be the best outcome for the situation because it could
help deter crime, make the victim's family feel safe, and it is an eye for an eye method.
One reason the death penalty works is because it helps deter, or get rid of, crime. Most people think it does not help lower crime and that the state
should just keep them in jail for life. In the article "Capital Punishment Works" David Muhlhausen stated that "Based on data from all 50 states from
1978 to 1997, Federal Communication Commission economist Paul Zimmerman demonstrated that each state execution deters an average of 14
murderers annually". Therefore, for each execution it decreases the amount of murderers that could happen. In the article "10 reasons the death
penalty.." by David Anderson stated that "Yet more research...show more content...
On Thanksgiving day in Columbus, Ohio 2010, Caron E. Montgomery got the death penalty for killing his girlfriend, there 2 year old son, and 10
year old child. In the article "Death Penalty Brings Relief" by John Futty stated, "Some of the family said,'Let him suffer in prison the rest of his life.'
But I can't imagine what the death penalty would be for if not for this." If an individual was a victim of a murder how would you feel about it? Usually,
if they get the death penalty the family's of the victim will feel relieved, thinking that it could never happen again. In the same article John Futty stated,
"A threeā€“judge panel sentenced the killer to death,'Yes! Yes!" some of the spectators said. Just imagine the feeling they would get finding out the killer

Life In Russian Prison Essay
In order to understand what life is like in a Russian prison, one must first understand that there are different prisons with different sections. When you
are arrested, you are held in preā€“trial detention unless you are judged to be neither a flight risk nor a risk with respect to committing another crime. In
practice, this is uncommon. Some prisons are relatively modern, while others like Kresty ("Crosses") in St. Petersburg are centuries old ā€“ you get the
satisfaction of being imprisoned in a historical landmark at the expense of modern comforts. However, as a general rule, you will be in a cell with
seven or more other inmates, the ventilation will be terrible and overcrowding used to be so bad in the 90s that there were not enough cots...show more

The thing people are usually most curious about is Russian prison culture and it is often badly misunderstood. People who are convicted typically do
not serve time in prison. A sentence is characterised by its length and the 'regime of incarceration', which can be 'common', 'strict' or 'special'. If yours
is 'common', you will be sent to a colony referred to as a "zone" where you get to live in a barracksā€“style dormitory, move relatively freely, work and
participate in common activities with amateur dramatics being especially popular. This is by no means an easy life, but you get to see the sky and
breathe fresh air; as a consequence, people in preā€“trial detention confessing to crimes they didn't commit in order to speed up their trial and get out of
a prison and into a "zone" quickly is a serious problem. A "strict" sentence will land you in a high security zone or a "krytaya", meaning "covered", ie
a prison where you don't get to see the sky. These remand prisons are not pleasant places to be and convicts end up there when their crimes exhibit
particular brutality or for violent crimes they've committed

Essay on Life in Prison
If you walked into a room with 84 adults, chances are two of them have been in prison. One out of 42 adults in the United States has been
incarcerated. 2.3 million people serving time behind bars outnumber the residents of the fourth largest U.S. city. According to California Prison Focus,
"no other society in human history has imprisoned so many if its own citizens." The U.S. has locked up more people than any other country (Paleaz,
2013). Are prisons in the U.S. doing what they were intended to do? Out of the millions of lawbreakers confined, how many are getting reformed,
learning new trades, completing degrees or refining criminal behaviors? This would seem like a legitimate question, but the real question is, "Who is

According to Bettina Aptheker, there are no prisons in the United States. There is a Department of Corrections, and there are "correctional facilities"
equipped with "educational programs, ""vocational training" and the necessary "psychiatric therapy." Aptheker also maintains that the U.S. has inmates
and not prisoners. Political prisoners do not exist, just terrorists and those who perpetrate criminal violence.
The basic premise behind imprisonment is such that a prisoner is deprived of morals and that there could be no other logical explanation for
confinement. Aptheker also states that there is a slight suggestion that the system itself is at fault. At the time of Aptheker's writing she quoted an
assistant warden, who is also a clinical psychologist from San Quentin who said during an interview that prisoners suffer from "retarded emotional
growth." The warden also went on to say that, "the first goal of prison is to isolate people the community does not want at large. Safe confinement is the
goal. The second obligation is a focused on a good housekeeping job, the old humanitarian treatment concept." Which means that once the inmate is
restricted and isolated as dictated by the institutions standing operating procedures, he may start to receive treatment.

industries for a few dollars a day. Palaez

Essay Capital Punishment vs. Life Imprisonment
There are always two sides to every issue and capital punishment or life imprisonment is no different. This has been a very controversial issue for
decades and still is today. Capital Punishment also known as the death penalty is defined as being the penalty of death for a crime. Some feel that
capital punishment should be abolished because it is cruel; others believe life in prison is just as cruel. There are many reasons for the support of Capital
Punishment and for Life in Prison.
Capital punishment is the death penalty, or execution which is the sentence of death upon a person by judicial process as a punishment for a crime like
murdering another human and being found guilty by a group of jurors who have listen to a court hearing...show more content...
Life in prison is thought to be a more humane and less cruel sentence than the death penalty. Life in prison still offers a person a chance to enjoy
parts of their life, by still being able to keep it touch with their families. Someone who is placed in prison in their twenties has a chance to grow up
and see what they did was wrong. This is where the problem comes in for most people, because some people change.
The history of the death penalty is not new it's been around for hundreds of years. The death penalty was used in American by the start of the
American Revolution; the death penalty was used in all 13 colonies. Rhode Island was the only colony that did not have at least 10 crimes punishable
by death. (Reggio, 2009) It should come at no real shock that Rhode Island was the first state to outlaw the death penalty for all crimes. At one point in
our history public executions, such as hangings, where thought to be cruel so it was then changed to private exactions. Our Founding Fathers allowed
for death penalty when writing the constitution in 1787. At one point in our history public executions, such as hangings, where thought to be cruel so it
was then changed to private exactions. On August 6, 1890, New York State used an 'electric chair' to carry out the first execution by electrocution. As it
turned out, the process was hardly quick or painless. Despite the gruesome procedure, people still thought electrocution was more humane and efficient
than previous

Now Life In Prison
Now life in prison is argued to be cheaper, but the amount of money spent to keep someone in prison is more per year then executing someone in a
day. Life imprisonment is accumulatively higher given the expenses for food, health care, and other costs of sustaining the lives of incarcerated
individuals serving life (5 Arguments.2014.p3). Much of the cost, indeed, much of the disapproval of the death penalty, is attributed to 'decades of
appeals.' It is predictable that the loudest criticisms about death penalty delays come from death penalty opponents who have created them
and...Claimed 'cost studies,' often performed by or at the request of death penalty challengers, are frequently so incomplete as to be false and
misleading. For instance,

Life After Leaving Prison Essay
Reā€“entry into society after being incarcerated can be a very difficult task. After leaving prison, many individuals find it difficult to function in the real
world depending on how long they have been incarcerated. "Nearly six million Americans cannot vote because they have a felony on their record"
(Haney, 2001). Getting jobs or acceptance into certain colleges are difficult. These individuals are often judged and discriminated against, depending
on the communities in which they live. Many have no family to turn to or any place to live after they have been released. Stressors like these
contribute to some of these offenders going right back to the lifestyle that might have landed them in jail or prison. Social workers can provide these
individuals with shelter, job training/support, support groups, counseling or therapy, etc. Psychologists in the prison system are very important when it
comes down to diagnosis, treatment, therapy and counseling. Upon entering the prison system, each individual is required to take a quick mental
health screening. The screening "is designed to evaluate for major mental health disorders such as Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia and Major
Depressive Disorder" (Mauro, 2009). This will help to ensure that if they have a mental illness it can be treated while they are incarcerated....show more

Not all prisons are equipped to handle individuals with mental illnesses or emotional and psychological issues. Therefore, it is a positive thing to
have Social Workers and Psychologists along with other healthcare professionals in the prison system that are able to contribute to and assist those in
need. Incarceration has the ability to create new issues for a person and their families or even exacerbate a current one. It is favorable in many ways
to have professionals who are able to provide support these individuals and their families in whatever way

Persuasive Essay On Life In Prison
Life is the biggest gift a person can have ,and no one had the authority or power to take the life of anyone as a form of punishment. Since no one has
the right to take the life of another person in order to set " equilibrium "; another form of punishment should be given to this person. Life in prison is
the most humane form of punishment since it allows a person to conserve their life disregarding the magnitude of the actions they committed, offers a
second change to prisoners and death row can be a form of torture since it makes prisoners await for their own death and it can even cause
psychological problems. From all the types of punishment life in prison is the more humane because it is the punishment that shows mercy and
compassion unlike death which the solution for everything is to just kill. Since life in prison allows a person to conserve their life disregarding the
magnitude of their crime , it is the most humane punishment a person can be offered. Every person's life has equal value;therefore, no person can
determine when another person should die as a form of "justice". According to the Constitution of the United States it states that " all men are
created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with some unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.".
Basically, this means that every individual has the same rights as anybody else and there are 3 basic rights everyone has that were given by God
which are : life, liberty and the Pursuit of happiness. Because everyone is created equal, no one should be able to take these rights off anyone;
however, crimes need to be punished. The most humane punishment is life in prison since is taking only 2 of the 3 rights that are given to every
individual which are liberty and pursuit of happiness. In the other hand, the death would be taking away all of the 3 rights that are given to an
individual. From all the punishments there are; locking someone against their will is the most humane punishment since it allows this person to
conserve life itself . Every individual has committed a mistake at least once in their lifetime and with those mistakes second opportunities play an
important role in

Life in Prison
When an individual is introduced to the prison life, after violating rules and laws, he or she must come to terms about the journey he or she are about
to take behind bars in prison. No one can save them, or do their time for them, and a majority of their freedom has been stripped from them either
temporarily or permanently. Prison life deals with all walks of life and is not discriminative toward any race. In this paper I will discuss my
perspective on prison life, policies I would enforce an inmate's need for respect, changes on correctional policy, and why people commit crimes. I have
learned many things about prison life. I...show more content...
When incarcerated you have to learn the prison slang to survive. Understanding prison slang was mandatory to survive in prison; the inmates had to
learn this langue because it was vital to communicate efficiently with other inmates. Inmates knew if they used the word "Punk or Niggas" there would
be a fight if you weren't close with a black inmate.
Policies I would Enforce to Aid Inmate Adjustment Prisons have many policies set in place to help aid inmates' with adjusting to prison life. No
matter what policies are set in place to help aid inmates they will always have a hard time especially for first timers. According to Frank Schmalleger
and John Ortiz Smykla (2009) new inmates face major problems because of the loss of liberty, lack of material possessions, the depravation of
materials and services, the lack of heterosexual relationships, and feeling unsecured. I think that inmates can be helped with the adjustment process by
initiating and enforcing a program to deal with such issues. I think I would eliminate policies that are designed to make prison life unpleasant and
concentrate more on policies that help inmates progress in their educational and rehabilitation programs. One policy that is very important to inmates is
to feel safe in their prison environment. As a result there have been many debates on the rights of the inmates. I think the most important policy I would
enforce is educational programs that will

Time for breakfast.
When the unfriendly staff unlocks the door, the beauty of temporary freedom puts a smile on my face. We walk in single file, with boys on one side
and girls on the other. After they?ve checked us up, we put our hands behind a backs and walk towards the dining hall to eat breakfast, which consists
of muesli and lukewarm water.
Breakfast ends and we head to the playground for free play. Free play is the time where the prisoners are allowed to do whatever they like and play
whichever sport pleases them. As a prisoner, all I can do is enjoy it to the best I can. The fresh air is soothing yet disturbing at the same time. As
usual, I just sit by myself and reminisce on old times and past events. However, when my imagination takes me back in time, my reality doesn?t
change. The harsh reality of being in prison.
Lunchtime.
We come to the Lunch Quarters and wait for our lunch to arrive. We change out of our trainers and back into our sandals and as a privilege, we are

Lunch is here. Today?s menu consists of a hard cheese sandwich and a desert of crackers, with butter as hard as a rock. We usually go through four
jugs of lukewarm water. Everybody here thinks that the lunch meal is by far the best meal of the day, but compared to the food in the outside world,

Quality Of Life In Prison
Life In Prison
What is it like to be one of nearly 2.5 million people inside the United States prisons.
The first step of being sentenced to prison. First of all you have to obviously get arrested, when being arrested the jails don't do an extreme search
on you like they do in prisons the reason is, because there are people in there who are there for being arrested for petty crimes nothing to serious
although every crime is a crime and is bad but there are some crimes much worse then a D.U.I. Now for the men an women who have committed a
more serious crime like man slaughter you are still to be placed in jail but that is just one stop. The second and final stop is prison.
There are many aspects of prison life that determine what exactly your quality of life in prison will be like. First, what exactly your crime was
plays a big part in what will come next for you. For example, a misdemeanor such as petty theft that requires jail time will not require the same
security as a violent criminal with assault charges. There are three security levels in the U.S. Prison system. The first level, minimum security, is
basically like a guarded community in a sense. It is similar to college dorms in housing and many prisoners are free to roam around the yard. These
types of prisons are often times program oriented for example, many of the prisoners participate in community service and or workā€“camps. These types
of prison are full of opportunity for the prisoners with many ways to

Over the centuries one of the most common forms of punishment is imprisonment. As times past by the prison has taken on various shapes and forms.
The quality and most conditions of prisons have changed in order to provide better living conditions for the inmates, but the main purpose of the prison
has never changed, the online article Welcome to Stop the Crime states that " aprison have four major purposes, these include retribution,
incapacitation, deterrence and rehabilitation" (stoptheaca.org). This shows that the prison is there to ensure that criminals pay back society for the
crimes they have committed; it also serves as an area to keep criminals from hurting innocent civilians and it is also there to transform prisoners to law

The appetite of inmates vary, the amount of food that may full one prisoner may only just scratch the surface of another prisoner. At prisons
everyone gets the equal amount of food, this is done with the attempt to save money and supplies so the satisfaction of the prisoners isn't in the
prisons best interest. The lack of enough food may cause a few things; it may cause inmates to steal from each other which may lead to a lot of
cafeteria fights, it may also cause the prisoners to secretly acquire more food from the cafeteria which may lead to a even more rapid decrease in
foodstuffs, and if they are caught lead to severe punishments, and finally it may cause them to develop a pyramid system where the main man decides
who eats when.
As expected the living conditions of prisons are very low quality. Most people have the idea of a prison cell or inmates rooms to be small and dark
with a few beds, and actually in some places this idea is not very far from the truth, the difference is that the rooms are sometimes lit and the size its
determined by the number of inmates who occupy it. According to Discovery, the typical prison cell is small, where the general cell for one inmate is
usually eight feet by six feet, the prison usually furnishes it with bed, bed tray, desk, toilet and sink, and the

Opening his eyes, all Jerry sees surrounding him is damp darkness. There are no shadows or people he can see. No windows but an eerie breeze
blows past him, sending chills running up his arms. He goes to grab his 3ftX3ft blanket that covers only a portion of his body. The only sense of
time he can tell 10am. That is when one of the security guard brings a tray of slop for breakfast. That's only if you consider oatmeal drowned in
6ā€“monthā€“old gravy food. With only feeling the sun on his skin for two hours every week, his body craves warmth. Jerry has been in this jail cell for
seventeen years for murdering sixteen different people. Jerry pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in prison. While some people side with the
opinion of sentencing prisoners to jail for life, others side with the punishment of the death penalty.
Sentencing prisoners to life in jail is a major sentence that destroys lives. The life of the prisoner and that family. Knowing deep inside that the
prisoners mother or father or siblings will never be able to see them outside of that jail is truly heart breaking. However, they will always know
where they are. Compared to the death penalty, many people believe that sentenced to life will show how serious the crime was and that it will not be
tolerated. Being in that jail cell for 20+ years is torture and shows that that punishment is all you need to understand and repay your crime. The death
penalty costs more, delivers less, and puts innocent lives at risk.

If the prisoner went through the death penalty process, it would cost more than $1.26 million. If you were too make the process of the death penalty

You can see it as if the person who performed the crime actually deserves to die. You can also see it like does the federal government's actually get to

will kill you. They arn't teaching a lesson. They are teaching that murdering someone is ok, as long as they murdered someone else. That makes
absolutely no sense. For those who witness the death and for the doctors who have to insert the injections, after the death they may feel sick, dizzy,

Lifetime imprisonment and the death penalty are both punishments used for serious criminals who can be considered "a threat to society". Life
imprisonment can come with the option of possibility of parole throughout serving their sentencing or a life sentence without parole. The life sentence
is a commonly used punishment between the two due to the fact in the United States of America only 31 of the 50 states still use the death penalty. The
remaining states are left with a death penalty ban. Between the two punishments, the life sentence is the most practical and provides the most justice
for the wronged compared to the death penalty that is very costly, inhumane but almost too easy and can and has put innocent lives at risk.
The cost of the death penalty compared to the life sentence is excessive. Sending someone to jail and letting them die of natural causes is way
cheaper than executing them. According to the Los Angeles Times (Williams, 2011) the death penalty cost Californians $184 million a year. Over 20
years, the state would save more than $2.34 billion if they actually sentenced everyone on death row to life in prison. It costs 20 times more for an
execution than a lifeā€“withoutā€“parole case with the cost of attorneys being $300,000 more to represent a person on death row than someone with a life
sentence charge. Along with jury selection of capital cases being 3ā€“4 weeks longer and costing $200,000 more and with the heightened security at
execution adding $100,663 with many other expenses. The least expensive death penalty trial costs $1.1 million more than the most expensive
lifeā€“withoutā€“parole case. Making lifetime imprisonment the more sensible option cost wise.
The death penalty is not only inhumane but too easy for these criminals that deserve it. The life sentence is swift, severe and certain punishment
according to The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU, 2015). Sentencing someone to die in jail is a pragmatic alternative to public safety along with
murder victims' families to still provide them with justice. The death penalty can be consider the easy way out. Being only about 20 minutes of terror.

Pros And Cons Of Life In Prison
Convicted criminals who commit capital offences have their future established for them. Depending on the state, the inmates will either be sentenced to
life in prison without the chance of parole or sentenced to death by execution. While both alternatives essentially serve the justice needed for the
crimes, upon further evaluation, life imprisonment is the better than the death penalty.
Life in prison without parole essentially serves the same justice as the death penalty: "Life without parole provides swift, severe, and certain
punishment" (ProCon 1). When it comes down to comparing the punishments of death by execution or serving life in prison without the chance of
parole, both options are not as different as it may seem. Both methods provide justice, severe punishment and peace to the victim's family. Although the
two have similar outcomes, life imprisonment turns out to be the better option for the fate of the inmates. The state should not grant these horrible
criminals the liberty of being executed and be done with. These criminals who have committed the worst crimes possible should be held responsible
and pay for their actions and not just simply be executed. Life in prison is a much more justifiable punishment for these people because they are going
to have to live with themselves and in horrible conditions for their sins.
Life in prison is a cheaper option compared to the legal expenses for the death penalty. Robert Kaste explains, "If you divide the overall cost by the
number of actual executions... the death penalty is very expensive" (npr 1). Life imprisonment is the better option than the death penalty is because of
the overall cost. The process of both situations will cost a lot of money to the state. Cases that do not go through the death penalty cost around
$740,000. Death penalty cases average around $1,200,000. Since the inmates on death row have capital cases, money from the government is used to
grant them their right to an attorney. Both methods have an obvious huge expense, it is reasonable to opt for the least expensive one, life imprisonment.
Contrary to what one would assume, the death penalty does not decrease crime rates: "Death Penalty Information Center show that murder rates

How Prison Life Really Works Essay
How prison life really works Prison life is much harsher than jail. In prison you stay inside until you are done with your sentence or until you die; jail
is nothing compared to prison. Each prisoner is locked out from the outside world. Each inmate is in there for different crimes they have committed
outside and inside the prison. It is very interesting to see how the inmates survive in prison and how they adapt to their new lives because in prison
they are blocked from the outside world. The inmates don't exist to the people on the outside anymore. Violence is a big part of the problem in prison
because everywhere in prison someone gets hurt. The weaker inmates get sexually harassed by the ones who have the power to control whatever...show

The violence between the inmates is brutal. Some inmates use violence to show others that they are the strongest and that they are in charge of the
whole prison and other inmates that are under their protection. They take control of everything that is going on inside the prison. In the article of
Enforcing the Convict Code: Violence and Prison Culture, it talks about how violence in prison differs between women and men, "For instance, while
both women and men used violence to control the behavior of others, men tended to use it more often while women tended to use rumors', gossip,
and avoidance to deal with bothersome inmates." The inmates use violence to gain control of the prison. Violence happens when inmates talk or say
terrible things about each other. To a large extent there is violence between the inmates because either they don't get along with each other, or they
can't trust one another. In the article of Enforcing the Convict Code: Violence and Prison Culture by Rebecca Trammell, "mates understand violence
as a social process" the inmates only understand that violence is a process that they have to live with, it is their life to survive this process and follow
it. Inmates only know how to use violence to control the environment in the prison and the behavior as well. In the article of Enforcing the Convict
Code: Violence and Prison Culture by Rebecca Trammell, she tells us that inmates use this to control others "try to control

Approximately 1.4 million people out of the U.S.'s 280 million people are in prison. (Thomas, 2) The only reason people know about prisons is
because of the media. The news, movies, and books all contribute to people's stereotypes about prisons. Prisoners receive three meals a day, workout
facilities, a library, as well as other things. People are also given the idea, through the mass media, that prisoners are free to walk around certain parts
of the prison. All of these ideas are cast upon prisons so that people will not be afraid of them. Society has been given the idea...show more content...
Prisoners have many things that they have to cope with while in prison. The most common thing is missing one's family or friends the next being
missing one's freedom. (Zamble, 91) These are only two examples of the numerous things that inmates have to cope with. They are moving into an
environment in which most of them have only heard about in movies or on television so they do not know what to expect. "The prison experience is
sufficiently powerful that it nullifies much of the variance among inmates, and they come to resemble each other much more than before
imprisonment." (Zamble, 92) Everything in prison is basically uniform and routine. When you create uniformity it takes away people's sense of self,
it causes them to act similarly over time. So, if you were to imprison a person over time he would lose his sense of self and would become more like
the people that surround him.
Most prisoners try to keep as busy as possible in order to keep their minds off of family. The more that they occupy their time the less they will
think about things that they miss. By keeping busy the prisoners are able to keep themselves in higher spirits. If they have nothing to do some
inmates turn to reading letters or writing letters. "Š’ā€˜When I feel down about [being lonely], I read a letter or write one. If I don't have a new letter I
read old ones, they're still a pickā€“meā€“up and I feel better until I get a new one.'"

Death Penalty Or Life In Prison

  • 1. Death Penalty or Life in Prison Death Penalty or Life in Prison Sierra Brattain Southwestern Michigan College Death Penalty or Life in Prison Death Penalty I began my research by looking into the death penalty or also known as capital punishment. The death penalty is the action of executing a person who has committed an illegal act equivalent to death. Crimes punishable by death vary depending on the state; some include murder, sexual assault, treason, and other serious capital crimes ("Crimes Punishable", 2011). There are many different outlooks on the death penalty; some in favor of the death penalty believe it is the ultimate balance between good and evil and they often use the phrase, "an eye, for an eye." By using death as punishment they can assure society...show more content... Life in Prison I continue my research on the effects of life in prison opposed to the death penalty. Life imprisonment is any sentence for serious crimes that insures the offender spends life equivalency in prison or at least until parole. In a lot of cases when an offender is sentenced to life in prison they don't get the advantage of parole. No one ever sentenced to life without parole has ever been released, they spend the rest of their lives in prison and they usually die of natural causes (Wilbur, 2012). The advantages of life imprisonment are few but worth looking over, for example it saves an abundant amount of money. It costs tax payers $90,000 more per prisoner each year for inmates on death row then they pay for the general prison population. Also it saves many innocent lives of those who were wrongly accused. "More than 200 innocent men and women have been freed from prison in California after it was discovered that they were wrongfully convicted; three of them were sentenced to die for crimes they did not commit" ("The Truth," n.d.). The disadvantages of spending life in prison are serious and dangerous. Prisons all over the country are becoming very overpopulated, causing less aid for each inmate. Inmates sentenced to death in prison receive less access to programs and no special treatment unlike other prisoners ("The Truth," n.d.). Prison aren't pleasant, someone convicted Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. What Is Life In Prison The Death Penalty Orlando Hall was a death row prisoner in Texas 2007 for abducting, raping, beating, and murdering a 16 year old girl. What would the most reasonable consequence be? Life in prison or the death penalty? The death penalty might be the best outcome for the situation because it could help deter crime, make the victim's family feel safe, and it is an eye for an eye method. One reason the death penalty works is because it helps deter, or get rid of, crime. Most people think it does not help lower crime and that the state should just keep them in jail for life. In the article "Capital Punishment Works" David Muhlhausen stated that "Based on data from all 50 states from 1978 to 1997, Federal Communication Commission economist Paul Zimmerman demonstrated that each state execution deters an average of 14 murderers annually". Therefore, for each execution it decreases the amount of murderers that could happen. In the article "10 reasons the death penalty.." by David Anderson stated that "Yet more research...show more content... On Thanksgiving day in Columbus, Ohio 2010, Caron E. Montgomery got the death penalty for killing his girlfriend, there 2 year old son, and 10 year old child. In the article "Death Penalty Brings Relief" by John Futty stated, "Some of the family said,'Let him suffer in prison the rest of his life.' But I can't imagine what the death penalty would be for if not for this." If an individual was a victim of a murder how would you feel about it? Usually, if they get the death penalty the family's of the victim will feel relieved, thinking that it could never happen again. In the same article John Futty stated, "A threeā€“judge panel sentenced the killer to death,'Yes! Yes!" some of the spectators said. Just imagine the feeling they would get finding out the killer got sentenced to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Life In Russian Prison Essay In order to understand what life is like in a Russian prison, one must first understand that there are different prisons with different sections. When you are arrested, you are held in preā€“trial detention unless you are judged to be neither a flight risk nor a risk with respect to committing another crime. In practice, this is uncommon. Some prisons are relatively modern, while others like Kresty ("Crosses") in St. Petersburg are centuries old ā€“ you get the satisfaction of being imprisoned in a historical landmark at the expense of modern comforts. However, as a general rule, you will be in a cell with seven or more other inmates, the ventilation will be terrible and overcrowding used to be so bad in the 90s that there were not enough cots...show more content... The thing people are usually most curious about is Russian prison culture and it is often badly misunderstood. People who are convicted typically do not serve time in prison. A sentence is characterised by its length and the 'regime of incarceration', which can be 'common', 'strict' or 'special'. If yours is 'common', you will be sent to a colony referred to as a "zone" where you get to live in a barracksā€“style dormitory, move relatively freely, work and participate in common activities with amateur dramatics being especially popular. This is by no means an easy life, but you get to see the sky and breathe fresh air; as a consequence, people in preā€“trial detention confessing to crimes they didn't commit in order to speed up their trial and get out of a prison and into a "zone" quickly is a serious problem. A "strict" sentence will land you in a high security zone or a "krytaya", meaning "covered", ie a prison where you don't get to see the sky. These remand prisons are not pleasant places to be and convicts end up there when their crimes exhibit particular brutality or for violent crimes they've committed Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Essay on Life in Prison If you walked into a room with 84 adults, chances are two of them have been in prison. One out of 42 adults in the United States has been incarcerated. 2.3 million people serving time behind bars outnumber the residents of the fourth largest U.S. city. According to California Prison Focus, "no other society in human history has imprisoned so many if its own citizens." The U.S. has locked up more people than any other country (Paleaz, 2013). Are prisons in the U.S. doing what they were intended to do? Out of the millions of lawbreakers confined, how many are getting reformed, learning new trades, completing degrees or refining criminal behaviors? This would seem like a legitimate question, but the real question is, "Who is ...show more content... According to Bettina Aptheker, there are no prisons in the United States. There is a Department of Corrections, and there are "correctional facilities" equipped with "educational programs, ""vocational training" and the necessary "psychiatric therapy." Aptheker also maintains that the U.S. has inmates and not prisoners. Political prisoners do not exist, just terrorists and those who perpetrate criminal violence. The basic premise behind imprisonment is such that a prisoner is deprived of morals and that there could be no other logical explanation for confinement. Aptheker also states that there is a slight suggestion that the system itself is at fault. At the time of Aptheker's writing she quoted an assistant warden, who is also a clinical psychologist from San Quentin who said during an interview that prisoners suffer from "retarded emotional growth." The warden also went on to say that, "the first goal of prison is to isolate people the community does not want at large. Safe confinement is the goal. The second obligation is a focused on a good housekeeping job, the old humanitarian treatment concept." Which means that once the inmate is restricted and isolated as dictated by the institutions standing operating procedures, he may start to receive treatment. Prison: stimulating the economy or legalizing slavery The majority of the inmates are black or hispanic and as prisoners are forced to work for various industries for a few dollars a day. • 5. Essay Capital Punishment vs. Life Imprisonment There are always two sides to every issue and capital punishment or life imprisonment is no different. This has been a very controversial issue for decades and still is today. Capital Punishment also known as the death penalty is defined as being the penalty of death for a crime. Some feel that capital punishment should be abolished because it is cruel; others believe life in prison is just as cruel. There are many reasons for the support of Capital Punishment and for Life in Prison. Capital punishment is the death penalty, or execution which is the sentence of death upon a person by judicial process as a punishment for a crime like murdering another human and being found guilty by a group of jurors who have listen to a court hearing...show more content... Life in prison is thought to be a more humane and less cruel sentence than the death penalty. Life in prison still offers a person a chance to enjoy parts of their life, by still being able to keep it touch with their families. Someone who is placed in prison in their twenties has a chance to grow up and see what they did was wrong. This is where the problem comes in for most people, because some people change. The history of the death penalty is not new it's been around for hundreds of years. The death penalty was used in American by the start of the American Revolution; the death penalty was used in all 13 colonies. Rhode Island was the only colony that did not have at least 10 crimes punishable by death. (Reggio, 2009) It should come at no real shock that Rhode Island was the first state to outlaw the death penalty for all crimes. At one point in our history public executions, such as hangings, where thought to be cruel so it was then changed to private exactions. Our Founding Fathers allowed for death penalty when writing the constitution in 1787. At one point in our history public executions, such as hangings, where thought to be cruel so it was then changed to private exactions. On August 6, 1890, New York State used an 'electric chair' to carry out the first execution by electrocution. As it turned out, the process was hardly quick or painless. Despite the gruesome procedure, people still thought electrocution was more humane and efficient than previous Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Now Life In Prison Now life in prison is argued to be cheaper, but the amount of money spent to keep someone in prison is more per year then executing someone in a day. Life imprisonment is accumulatively higher given the expenses for food, health care, and other costs of sustaining the lives of incarcerated individuals serving life (5 Arguments.2014.p3). Much of the cost, indeed, much of the disapproval of the death penalty, is attributed to 'decades of appeals.' It is predictable that the loudest criticisms about death penalty delays come from death penalty opponents who have created them and...Claimed 'cost studies,' often performed by or at the request of death penalty challengers, are frequently so incomplete as to be false and misleading. • 7. Life After Leaving Prison Essay Reā€“entry into society after being incarcerated can be a very difficult task. After leaving prison, many individuals find it difficult to function in the real world depending on how long they have been incarcerated. "Nearly six million Americans cannot vote because they have a felony on their record" (Haney, 2001). Getting jobs or acceptance into certain colleges are difficult. These individuals are often judged and discriminated against, depending on the communities in which they live. Many have no family to turn to or any place to live after they have been released. Stressors like these contribute to some of these offenders going right back to the lifestyle that might have landed them in jail or prison. Social workers can provide these individuals with shelter, job training/support, support groups, counseling or therapy, etc. Psychologists in the prison system are very important when it comes down to diagnosis, treatment, therapy and counseling. Upon entering the prison system, each individual is required to take a quick mental health screening. The screening "is designed to evaluate for major mental health disorders such as Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia and Major Depressive Disorder" (Mauro, 2009). This will help to ensure that if they have a mental illness it can be treated while they are incarcerated....show more content... Not all prisons are equipped to handle individuals with mental illnesses or emotional and psychological issues. Therefore, it is a positive thing to have Social Workers and Psychologists along with other healthcare professionals in the prison system that are able to contribute to and assist those in need. Incarceration has the ability to create new issues for a person and their families or even exacerbate a current one. It is favorable in many ways to have professionals who are able to provide support these individuals and their families in whatever way Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Persuasive Essay On Life In Prison Life is the biggest gift a person can have ,and no one had the authority or power to take the life of anyone as a form of punishment. Since no one has the right to take the life of another person in order to set " equilibrium "; another form of punishment should be given to this person. Life in prison is the most humane form of punishment since it allows a person to conserve their life disregarding the magnitude of the actions they committed, offers a second change to prisoners and death row can be a form of torture since it makes prisoners await for their own death and it can even cause psychological problems. From all the types of punishment life in prison is the more humane because it is the punishment that shows mercy and compassion unlike death which the solution for everything is to just kill. Since life in prison allows a person to conserve their life disregarding the magnitude of their crime , it is the most humane punishment a person can be offered. Every person's life has equal value;therefore, no person can determine when another person should die as a form of "justice". According to the Constitution of the United States it states that " all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with some unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.". Basically, this means that every individual has the same rights as anybody else and there are 3 basic rights everyone has that were given by God which are : life, liberty and the Pursuit of happiness. Because everyone is created equal, no one should be able to take these rights off anyone; however, crimes need to be punished. The most humane punishment is life in prison since is taking only 2 of the 3 rights that are given to every individual which are liberty and pursuit of happiness. In the other hand, the death would be taking away all of the 3 rights that are given to an individual. From all the punishments there are; locking someone against their will is the most humane punishment since it allows this person to conserve life itself . Every individual has committed a mistake at least once in their lifetime and with those mistakes second opportunities play an important role in Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Essay on Life in Prison Life in Prison Cody Cotten CJA/383 December 21, 2010 Chet Madison Jr. Life in Prison When an individual is introduced to the prison life, after violating rules and laws, he or she must come to terms about the journey he or she are about to take behind bars in prison. No one can save them, or do their time for them, and a majority of their freedom has been stripped from them either temporarily or permanently. Prison life deals with all walks of life and is not discriminative toward any race. In this paper I will discuss my perspective on prison life, policies I would enforce an inmate's need for respect, changes on correctional policy, and why people commit crimes. I have learned many things about prison life. I...show more content... When incarcerated you have to learn the prison slang to survive. Understanding prison slang was mandatory to survive in prison; the inmates had to learn this langue because it was vital to communicate efficiently with other inmates. Inmates knew if they used the word "Punk or Niggas" there would be a fight if you weren't close with a black inmate. Policies I would Enforce to Aid Inmate Adjustment Prisons have many policies set in place to help aid inmates' with adjusting to prison life. No matter what policies are set in place to help aid inmates they will always have a hard time especially for first timers. According to Frank Schmalleger and John Ortiz Smykla (2009) new inmates face major problems because of the loss of liberty, lack of material possessions, the depravation of materials and services, the lack of heterosexual relationships, and feeling unsecured. I think that inmates can be helped with the adjustment process by initiating and enforcing a program to deal with such issues. I think I would eliminate policies that are designed to make prison life unpleasant and concentrate more on policies that help inmates progress in their educational and rehabilitation programs. One policy that is very important to inmates is

I opened my eyes and a yellow light on the ceiling greeted me with a bright stare. I rolled myself out of the bed with a slight groan and my back started complaining by cracking in different places like firecrackers. I can see the sun shining outside my cell but no warmth is being given in. The only warmth I get is from my 2cm sheet of "blanket". We walk in single file, with boys on one side and girls on the other. After they?ve checked us up, we put our hands behind a backs and walk towards the dining hall to eat breakfast, which consists of muesli and lukewarm water. Breakfast ends and we head to the playground for free play. Free play is the time where the prisoners are allowed to do whatever they like and play whichever sport pleases them. As a prisoner, all I can do is enjoy it to the best I can. The fresh air is soothing yet disturbing at the same time. As usual, I just sit by myself and reminisce on old times and past events. However, when my imagination takes me back in time, my reality doesn?t change. The harsh reality of being in prison. Lunchtime. We come to the Lunch Quarters and wait for our lunch to arrive. • 13. Quality Of Life In Prison Life In Prison What is it like to be one of nearly 2.5 million people inside the United States prisons. The first step of being sentenced to prison. First of all you have to obviously get arrested, when being arrested the jails don't do an extreme search on you like they do in prisons the reason is, because there are people in there who are there for being arrested for petty crimes nothing to serious although every crime is a crime and is bad but there are some crimes much worse then a D.U.I. Now for the men an women who have committed a more serious crime like man slaughter you are still to be placed in jail but that is just one stop. The second and final stop is prison. There are many aspects of prison life that determine what exactly your quality of life in prison will be like. First, what exactly your crime was plays a big part in what will come next for you. For example, a misdemeanor such as petty theft that requires jail time will not require the same security as a violent criminal with assault charges. There are three security levels in the U.S. Prison system. The first level, minimum security, is basically like a guarded community in a sense. It is similar to college dorms in housing and many prisoners are free to roam around the yard. These types of prisons are often times program oriented for example, many of the prisoners participate in community service and or workā€“camps. These types of prison are full of opportunity for the prisoners with many ways to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Life in Prison Over the centuries one of the most common forms of punishment is imprisonment. As times past by the prison has taken on various shapes and forms. The quality and most conditions of prisons have changed in order to provide better living conditions for the inmates, but the main purpose of the prison has never changed, the online article Welcome to Stop the Crime states that " aprison have four major purposes, these include retribution, incapacitation, deterrence and rehabilitation" (stoptheaca.org). This shows that the prison is there to ensure that criminals pay back society for the crimes they have committed; it also serves as an area to keep criminals from hurting innocent civilians and it is also there to transform prisoners to law ...show more content... The appetite of inmates vary, the amount of food that may full one prisoner may only just scratch the surface of another prisoner. At prisons everyone gets the equal amount of food, this is done with the attempt to save money and supplies so the satisfaction of the prisoners isn't in the prisons best interest. The lack of enough food may cause a few things; it may cause inmates to steal from each other which may lead to a lot of cafeteria fights, it may also cause the prisoners to secretly acquire more food from the cafeteria which may lead to a even more rapid decrease in foodstuffs, and if they are caught lead to severe punishments, and finally it may cause them to develop a pyramid system where the main man decides who eats when. As expected the living conditions of prisons are very low quality. Most people have the idea of a prison cell or inmates rooms to be small and dark with a few beds, and actually in some places this idea is not very far from the truth, the difference is that the rooms are sometimes lit and the size its determined by the number of inmates who occupy it. According to Discovery, the typical prison cell is small, where the general cell for one inmate is usually eight feet by six feet, the prison usually furnishes it with bed, bed tray, desk, toilet and sink, and the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Prison Life In Prison Essay Opening his eyes, all Jerry sees surrounding him is damp darkness. There are no shadows or people he can see. No windows but an eerie breeze blows past him, sending chills running up his arms. He goes to grab his 3ftX3ft blanket that covers only a portion of his body. The only sense of time he can tell 10am. That is when one of the security guard brings a tray of slop for breakfast. That's only if you consider oatmeal drowned in 6ā€“monthā€“old gravy food. With only feeling the sun on his skin for two hours every week, his body craves warmth. Jerry has been in this jail cell for seventeen years for murdering sixteen different people. Jerry pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in prison. While some people side with the opinion of sentencing prisoners to jail for life, others side with the punishment of the death penalty. Sentencing prisoners to life in jail is a major sentence that destroys lives. The life of the prisoner and that family. Knowing deep inside that the prisoners mother or father or siblings will never be able to see them outside of that jail is truly heart breaking. However, they will always know where they are. Compared to the death penalty, many people believe that sentenced to life will show how serious the crime was and that it will not be tolerated. Being in that jail cell for 20+ years is torture and shows that that punishment is all you need to understand and repay your crime. The death penalty costs more, delivers less, and puts innocent lives at risk. Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Although having the death row may bring the victims closer, The cost of death vs. life in prison is irradical. Prisoners who do not go through the death penalty process only costs $740,000. If the prisoner went through the death penalty process, it would cost more than $1.26 million. They are teaching that murdering someone is ok, as long as they murdered someone else. That makes absolutely no sense. For those who witness the death and for the doctors who have to insert the injections, after the death they may feel sick, dizzy, dazed, numb and empty. • 17. Lifetime imprisonment and the death penalty are both punishments used for serious criminals who can be considered "a threat to society". Life imprisonment can come with the option of possibility of parole throughout serving their sentencing or a life sentence without parole. The life sentence is a commonly used punishment between the two due to the fact in the United States of America only 31 of the 50 states still use the death penalty. The remaining states are left with a death penalty ban. Between the two punishments, the life sentence is the most practical and provides the most justice for the wronged compared to the death penalty that is very costly, inhumane but almost too easy and can and has put innocent lives at risk. The cost of the death penalty compared to the life sentence is excessive. Sending someone to jail and letting them die of natural causes is way cheaper than executing them. According to the Los Angeles Times (Williams, 2011) the death penalty cost Californians $184 million a year. Over 20 years, the state would save more than $2.34 billion if they actually sentenced everyone on death row to life in prison. It costs 20 times more for an execution than a lifeā€“withoutā€“parole case with the cost of attorneys being $300,000 more to represent a person on death row than someone with a life sentence charge. Along with jury selection of capital cases being 3ā€“4 weeks longer and costing $200,000 more and with the heightened security at execution adding $100,663 with many other expenses. The least expensive death penalty trial costs $1.1 million more than the most expensive lifeā€“withoutā€“parole case. Making lifetime imprisonment the more sensible option cost wise. The death penalty is not only inhumane but too easy for these criminals that deserve it. The life sentence is swift, severe and certain punishment according to The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU, 2015). Sentencing someone to die in jail is a pragmatic alternative to public safety along with murder victims' families to still provide them with justice. The death penalty can be consider the easy way out. Being only about 20 minutes of terror. It is a concoction of very well explained reasoning. Of course I would select the side which I trust that is precise. The one I truly do concur with would be Garinger. I concur with this individual inasmuch as, she is accurate with the resolution she came up with. We as human beings, ponder that everything we do is perfectly exquisite. So, other individuals think that they can push these people around because they "deserve" it. This is very unfair because they may never know if the person is struggling or has a mental illness that needs to be handled well. It is unbelievable that people can be cruel to each other. It makes me think that they have no respectful manners. Negative people are going to end up in a place where they can get help. Most prisoners will not see it as good place to be in. I think it is because it is a place where they can actually be sober if they are using any type of drug that makes them go crazy. Therefore, I strongly do believe that the "outsiders" shall not act one way to people who are in aprison . It is not fair that these kids mindset did not fully develop not knowing the consequences they would go through. Maybe there were told once that it was forced. • 19. Pros And Cons Of Life In Prison Convicted criminals who commit capital offences have their future established for them. Depending on the state, the inmates will either be sentenced to life in prison without the chance of parole or sentenced to death by execution. While both alternatives essentially serve the justice needed for the crimes, upon further evaluation, life imprisonment is the better than the death penalty. Life in prison without parole essentially serves the same justice as the death penalty: "Life without parole provides swift, severe, and certain punishment" (ProCon 1). When it comes down to comparing the punishments of death by execution or serving life in prison without the chance of parole, both options are not as different as it may seem. Both methods provide justice, severe punishment and peace to the victim's family. Although the two have similar outcomes, life imprisonment turns out to be the better option for the fate of the inmates. The state should not grant these horrible criminals the liberty of being executed and be done with. These criminals who have committed the worst crimes possible should be held responsible and pay for their actions and not just simply be executed. Life in prison is a much more justifiable punishment for these people because they are going to have to live with themselves and in horrible conditions for their sins. Life in prison is a cheaper option compared to the legal expenses for the death penalty. Robert Kaste explains, "If you divide the overall cost by the number of actual executions... the death penalty is very expensive" (npr 1). Life imprisonment is the better option than the death penalty is because of the overall cost. The process of both situations will cost a lot of money to the state. Cases that do not go through the death penalty cost around $740,000. Death penalty cases average around $1,200,000. Since the inmates on death row have capital cases, money from the government is used to grant them their right to an attorney. Both methods have an obvious huge expense, it is reasonable to opt for the least expensive one, life imprisonment. Contrary to what one would assume, the death penalty does not decrease crime rates: "Death Penalty Information Center show that murder rates Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 20. How Prison Life Really Works Essay How prison life really works Prison life is much harsher than jail. In prison you stay inside until you are done with your sentence or until you die; jail is nothing compared to prison. Each prisoner is locked out from the outside world. Each inmate is in there for different crimes they have committed outside and inside the prison. It is very interesting to see how the inmates survive in prison and how they adapt to their new lives because in prison they are blocked from the outside world. The inmates don't exist to the people on the outside anymore. Violence is a big part of the problem in prison because everywhere in prison someone gets hurt. The weaker inmates get sexually harassed by the ones who have the power to control whatever...show more content... The violence between the inmates is brutal. Some inmates use violence to show others that they are the strongest and that they are in charge of the whole prison and other inmates that are under their protection. They take control of everything that is going on inside the prison. In the article of Enforcing the Convict Code: Violence and Prison Culture, it talks about how violence in prison differs between women and men, "For instance, while both women and men used violence to control the behavior of others, men tended to use it more often while women tended to use rumors', gossip, and avoidance to deal with bothersome inmates." The inmates use violence to gain control of the prison. Violence happens when inmates talk or say terrible things about each other. To a large extent there is violence between the inmates because either they don't get along with each other, or they can't trust one another. In the article of Enforcing the Convict Code: Violence and Prison Culture by Rebecca Trammell, "mates understand violence as a social process" the inmates only understand that violence is a process that they have to live with, it is their life to survive this process and follow it. Inmates only know how to use violence to control the environment in the prison and the behavior as well. In the article of Enforcing the Convict Code: Violence and Prison Culture by Rebecca Trammell, she tells us that inmates use this to control others "try to control Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 21. Prison Life Essays Prison Life Most people have no idea what it feels like to be in prison, statistically only one out of every five people will know what its like to be in prison. Approximately 1.4 million people out of the U.S.'s 280 million people are in prison. (Thomas, 2) The only reason people know about prisons is because of the media. The news, movies, and books all contribute to people's stereotypes about prisons. Prisoners receive three meals a day, workout facilities, a library, as well as other things. People are also given the idea, through the mass media, that prisoners are free to walk around certain parts of the prison. All of these ideas are cast upon prisons so that people will not be afraid of them. Society has been given the idea...show more content... Prisoners have many things that they have to cope with while in prison. The most common thing is missing one's family or friends the next being missing one's freedom. (Zamble, 91) These are only two examples of the numerous things that inmates have to cope with. They are moving into an environment in which most of them have only heard about in movies or on television so they do not know what to expect. "The prison experience is sufficiently powerful that it nullifies much of the variance among inmates, and they come to resemble each other much more than before imprisonment." (Zamble, 92) Everything in prison is basically uniform and routine. When you create uniformity it takes away people's sense of self, it causes them to act similarly over time. So, if you were to imprison a person over time he would lose his sense of self and would become more like the people that surround him. Most prisoners try to keep as busy as possible in order to keep their minds off of family. The more that they occupy their time the less they will think about things that they miss. By keeping busy the prisoners are able to keep themselves in higher spirits. If they have nothing to do some inmates turn to reading letters or writing letters.
