1. Performance
a performance video will have the artist or band
performing the song, i.e on a stage etc, or the
artist could be dancing in the video. The
performance could be just one section of the
video or the whole duration of the video like
Jay-Z and Kanye West’s video 2 “In Paris” where
it is clips of them performing on stage at their
concerts. Examples of another performance
video would be a lot of Beyonce’s videos where
she is dancing but not on a stage in a location
relevant to the song. Performance videos don’t
just have to be performing as a set up like in a
concert. Sometimes videos will have a hybrid of
music genres, a narrative and a performance
where is jumps from the two throughout the
video.
Concept
Concept music videos are based on an idea or
concept. It is often unrealistic or futuristic like the
Kanye West video on the left, were in the
background there are unusual abstract images. A
concept video is an idea that is unique idea and
hasn’t been done before.
2. Narrative
Narrativevideos tell a story through a sequence of clips. It
normally tries to tell the story of the song, through a
sequence of clips that normally accompany the lyrics with
a visual of what it is saying. However, many narrative
music videos do not follow a story that has a literal
meaning to the lyrics.
An example of a narrative video is J.Cole’s “Power Trip”, it
tells the story of a journey, because of love.
