Descriptive essay
1. Descriptive essay. The most frightening experience,
Parachuting.
As I look back now, I can never understand how I was persuaded to takeup
parachuting by my best friend, Joe. Despite weeks of training, I was not prepared for
the actual jump. Spending hours jumping off a platform onto a mattress did not give
meany idea of what theactual jump would belike.
As the day of the jump was around thecorner, I began to wish that I had not
allowed Joe to persuadedoing something so terrifying. I constantly thoughtof
backing out but was too egoistic to do so. My instructor’s reminder that no matter
how often I jumped I would always feel frightened did not help much.
My feelings of fear increased excessively when I was on plane waiting for my
turn to makemy first jump. All ninepeopleaboard theplane appeared distant and
thoughtful, each chewing gum and musing on their own privatethoughtsof fear.
The plane circled over the landing area. The door through which wewere to
jump was opened. My stomach churned in fearful anticipation as themen beforeme
jumped out, each taking his turn with great effort and a moment hesitation. When
my turn came, I clutched thesides of thedoorway, closed my eyes and waited for
my dispatcher’s order. As soon as heshouted, “Go”, I jumped, screaming into theair.
My heart was I my mouth as I tried desperately to calm my nerves. It was a few
seconds beforeI began to realizethat a mighty wind blowing at least 300 kilometres
an hour was striking onesideof my body. I had never felt so helpless in the power of
blind physical forces. I was being rolled and knocked about by such strong waves of
air.
Suddenly, therewas a hard tug at my shoulders. Theparachutehad opened. I
heaved a heavy sigh of relief and said a silent prayer of gratitude. The most
frightening moment of my lifewas over. I was descending fast and my fear was
slowly being replaced by a great senseof achievement. There was hardly any timeto
feel morethan surprise, and then theearth which had appeared at first to bemiles
away, suddenly seemed to rush up to me, giving meno time to even think about the
landing drill that I had previously mastered. As I landed with a bump, I knew that
having completed themost frightening feat in my life, I had just overcomemy fear.
