Making a Lung Model 9th Annual Day of the Teacher Conference March 26, 2011 CSUEB Concord Campus Charles Reynes Elementary Science Specialist Castro Valley, USD
Making a Lung Model Materials 1 cup with hole 1 balloon 1 large rubber band Sturdy tape such as electrical tape, Scotch tape will also work.
Making a Lung Model Cut a 6” x 6” square of plastic sheeting from a garbage bag. I fold the bag so that I can cut several squares at once. Fold each square in half. The next slide will show you how to attach the tape handle.
Making a Lung Model Attach a quarter of the tape to one side of the fold. Turn the plastic over and fold the tape back on itself, attaching the remaining one-fourth of the tape to the other side of the plastic fold.
Making a Lung Model Drill a hole in through the bottom of the cup. The hole needs to be slightly larger than the straw, but small enough to create a tight fit when the straw is inserted through the opening of the balloon. Insert the balloon through the hole. Any narrow, blunt object will make this task easier.
Making a Lung Model Cut about 3-4 inches off the end of a bendy straw. Insert the straw into the balloon. The balloon forms an air tight seal between the straw and the hole.
Making a Lung Model Center the diaphragm with the tape handle out. Secure the diaphragm with a rubber band.
Push up on the diaphragm and the balloon lung exhales. Making a Lung Model Pull down on the diaphragm and the balloon lung inhales.
