2. First French Colonial Empire
• France’s Empire began in 1605 when they settled in Canada.
• In 1608 France formed the city Quebec which is now the
capital of Canada.
• While in Canada France was very big into the fur trading
company and sent furs over to Europe to sell.
• The French gained an alliance with the Indians in Canada for
trading and such unlike the Spanish who used them as slaves
and England who took their land.
3. • France lost one of their major lands of Canada, Acadia to the
British in 1713 when Britain moved north.
• In 1699 France traveled south and claimed Louisiana which
had the Great Lakes they used for traveling.
• In 1664 France took over Haiti which grew to be the richest
sugar colony in the Caribbean.
• Also in 1664 France began expanding and forming colonies in
West Africa and India.
