Assignment Week 7

Part I: Review the Skill Development Experience 1. Do the popular media approve of certain types of relationships and not others? The media
approves of many types of relationships. The media shows a close relationship with one another and other types as well. Interpersonal relationships are
important to everyone and it looks like it is the top motivation for social media communication. Para social relationships are when audience members
recognize themselves to have media personalities. Popular media approves of the six stages of relationships, which are: contact, involvement, intimacy,
repair, deterioration and dissolution. It also approves the types of relationship: friendship, love, family,...show more content...
Protective families are stress agreement, avoids problem with little communication. Pluralistic family is very supportive with each other and
encourages different attitudes and point of views. * 3. What do the media say about the rules for relationships? Rules for relationships helps identify
the successful from the destructive relationship behaviors. It also helps to identify if there is something wrong in the relationship and how it can be
worked out. The rules of relationship help to maintain and develop a good relationship. 4. How do the media deal with the dark side of interpersonal
relationships, such as relationship violence and spousal abuse? Media deals with the dark side of interpersonal relationship by offering help online or
on tv or anywhere. There is advertisement that gives out phone numbers and names of people that can help with their problems. There are media sites
that offer many things to help a relationship repair the problems going on. Part II: Conflicting Styles The best conflict style that describes me is the
accommodating style. The accommodating style is when 'I lose, you win' takes place. I feel that I think about others first than myself. I don't like to
argue so I rather keep the peace. I am more concern about others needs than what is happening to me. Instead of arguing with others, I rather agree with
them and keep them happy. But lately, I have realized that I

Effect of Media and Mass Communication Essay
The media is a powerful presence within the lives of others. It can be described as the main channel of mass communication. Media is often used to
deliver a message to a large audience who are diverse. It can be written, broadcast or spoken. Media is a significant force within modern culture.
Culture can be defined as the norms and values of a society. In our culture, the communications media hold an influential place in disseminating
information, forming attitudes, and motivating behaviour. Technological advances are increasing the role of the media and its capacity to shape public
opinion. Our society depends on the news media to provide information to help us form opinions and make voting decisions. It is clear the media has a

It was cheaper and made large scale distribution possible. These technology advances allowed the medium to enter popular culture and enhancing its
influence within society [McLuhan, 1962]. By the nineteen twenties, mass media became known not only for print media, but radio and television
also. Television provided both information and entertainment which became very popular. It was considered easier than actively reading. In recent
times, mass media has taken on a different form; the internet. It is now the most popular form of mass media. Not only has the internet become a
sensation but mobile phones, blogs and podcasts have all become the new forms of mass media within our modern culture. The media is easily
accessed and waiting for us at the touch of a button. As a result, our culture is enormously influenced by the media. In this essay I will be discussing
the media and deviance and the effects it has on our culture.
One theory that was formed during this investigation was the cumulative effects model [Elisabeth Noelle–Neumann, 1974]. This complex theory looks
at the potential affects media has on an individual with an active media consumption. This theory focuses on the agenda setting function in which the
media acts upon. The media cannot force an individual to think a certain way. However it does have the power to control what the individual thinks
about. If an issue is frequently in the media, the

Crime and the Media
The public depends on the news media for its understanding of crime. Reportedly three quarters (76%) of the public say, they form their opinions
about crime from what they see or read in the news (Dorfman & Schiraldi, 2001). After reviewing five hours of reality crime television shows,
one is left with a very dismal look on society and a prejudice towards minorities as they are largely depicted as the perpetrators of crime. This new
genre commonly referred to as reality television appears to be sweeping the nation by storm. Opinions vary, depending on whom you ask, to what
extent reality plays a role versus the selling of a product. Sensationalism, advertising, ratings hype, profiling and fear all comprise the mass...show more

The apprehension and subsequent arrest all dramatized for the cameras. The suspect, heard on camera being questioned about his past domestic
violence charges, his inability to pay child support and finally he is asked about the observed drug purchase.
Of the nineteen cases reviewed, drug related crimes were more prevalent. In cases involving African American suspects, the drug of choice was crack
cocaine. In suspects that were Caucasian, the drug of choice was methamphetamines. On the episode aired on May 5, 2005, COPS: Bad Girls, the
suspect, a Caucasian woman was selling drugs and prostituting (Langley, 2005). With the cameras rolling, the audience is able to overhear, that the
suspect is on welfare and has had her children taken away because of her drug habit. The suspect denies the charges, and the officer insists on making
the point that she is using her welfare money in order to purchase drugs.
In the cases reviewed, the program did not divulge the age. Upon observation, the average estimated age is twenty–five. Age did not appear to have any
particular correlation to the type of criminal activity. What appeared to be more in play was the socioeconomic scale of the suspects. The average age
and circumstances seem to strike a familiar vein with the cases reviewed. On average, the suspects were unemployed, residing with a family member, a
history of violence and drug use. This

Media Literacy in the Classroom

Media literacy is defined as "the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and communicate messages in a variety of forms" (Know TV). In more practical
terms, media literacy means questioning the media and interpreting its many messages accordingly. Students are exposed to mass quantities of media
on a daily basis. They watch television and movies, read books, newspapers, and magazines, listen to music, and in more recent years explore the
Internet. This extreme exposure to media outlets leads to the need for education about the media. Media literacy is one way to help educate students
about issues in which they are already actively engaged. Media literacy should be implemented into...show more content...
Too often, people do not question or challenge the views media presents to us and simply accept the views at face value. Politicians rely on this during
campaign elections. The popularity of negative advertisements depreciating opposition parties has grown tremendously over the years because they are
often successful. The public embraces the negative media messages, then votes accordingly. Oftentimes, people do not even know they have been
acted–upon by the media.
Media literate people do not have quite as much trouble interpreting similar messages, for they are aware of the pervasive nature of the media. Media
literacy courses allow people to hone their critical thinking skills and make informed decisions. These people are able to distinguish between fact and
fiction, or at least recognize the differentiation between the two. They are able to examine the messages supplied to them by the media and in turn
come to more knowledgeable decisions concerning politics and culture in society. They are able to see that the media simply represent the political
arena from one viewpoint and that there may be more to the story then first it seems.
The information learned through media literacy can also be applied to the second argument that focuses upon the influence media exercises on our
values and behaviors. Media is probably the most powerful influence on teen attitudes and beliefs in American society. The abundance of media
exposure contributes

Essay on media and its influence on the public
The media is a huge form of communication and source of information in the United States; on one side of the dispute are the beliefs that the media is
too opinionated. On the other side are the beliefs that the media is just a simple informer that just reports the facts. The main issue for both of these
beliefs is: does the media affect opinions on the issues from opinionated reports, or does it just report the facts that public may already know? If one
could answer this question then they would know if the media was responsible or not for writing history.
The media is a form of communication used to reach the general public to form audiences for information, artistic expression, and other kinds of

The production of media continued on from the eighteenth century through the nineteenth century and now producing numerous forms of media that
are still used today. (MLA)
Confidence in the media especially the news media has been sinking. Recent polls held by the Pole Research Center shows that eight months after the
9/11 event public confidence plummeted below normal rating levels. The public is irritated by the media's unwillingness to admit its mistakes. And,
nearly sixty percent of those polled think that the media is biased. It is also known that a few months after the 9/11 event media is back to its old
habits such as analysis, opinion and speculation, and that are largely based on anonymous sources. Of course the public prefers information that is not
interpreted or hyped. For example the media's favorable treatment of Bill Clinton and his efforts to re–write the history of his administration has pushed
confidence levels to a low. By allowing and promoting Bill Clinton and his effort gives the media a hyped since of favoritism that is obvious to the
public view. The public's confidence levels have gone so low that the public believes almost nothing Bill Clinton has to say which disrupts the media
and its credibility.

Persuasive Essay On The Media
My previous experience with this topic of media always trying to persuade you, well I do have never really thought about it like that. I have read
the book, The Hunger Games, and seen the movie. I have never put any thought in how the media persuades them and controls their society. For
me, the book and movie were very entertaining. Action packed and attention grabbing, you never wanted to look away or put the book down
because you never knew what was going to happen next. For the next 2 hours, or however long it takes you to finish the book, you put yourself in
the shoes of someone else's life. The main point of this article is how the media is always trying to persuade you. Even when you think you are just
being informed, whoever is informing you has an opinion of that topic. That person's opinion of the subject has to do with feelings and "feelings
are often times much more powerful than fact" (Page 2). Knowing that feelings are more powerful than fact, the media tries to inject fear. The
reason behind injecting fear is to persuade you to think what they think. We might leave in a country full of freedom's, but "we still manage to be
molded by a medium that we have no control over" (Page 3). We learn about what is going on in the world by what we see in the mass media. We
are not over in Iran, we only know what is being told to us. We could have a different view from what the media tells us, if we saw it in person and
knew what they were going through. The media just gives us enough information to be persuaded to what they want us to think. I think the point is
worth making, have people start thinking more in depth about what they are being told. Have them thinking about what are they leaving out and why.
My reaction to this article is mind–blowing. I think she did a great job proving her point. Every time she made another point, it got me thinking and
seeing what she was saying. When she talked about how "it is just a movie... but it is also manipulation" really struck me and made me think. While
watching movies, sometimes we laugh or sometimes we cry, but have you ever really thought about it. The producer plays sad music to arouse a sad
feeling, the main point of that is to show that they can manipulate

Media Literacy
Media literacy helps us understand our own habits and deal with the constant media around us. To increase my own media literacy, I estimated how
much time I spent using media, and later tracked how much time was spent using media. This data opened my eyes to the amount of media I exposed
myself to daily and helped me determine whether media positively or negatively affects my everyday life. Tracking my media usage, taught me about
my own habits. For instance, my initial estimations underestimated my actual recorded times. To my surprise, I spend around one hour and forty
minutes a day on my laptop doing school work rather than the assumed one hour a day. Plus, I mistakenly believed that I did not use my computer for
any entertainment purposes. After tracking my time, I realize I spend at least an hour on Netflix a day. Also, I failed to include my non–digital media,
textbooks, on the estimation sheet. Rather than not putting anytime into books, I spend around two hours a day reading text. This data helped me
examine that media is not always digital, but is displayed through other mediums. The second largest section of my time was spent on social media at
an alarming time of one and a half hours daily. From these records, I concluded that media negatively effects my everyday life. Digital media is a
distraction for school work and studying since seeking a distraction online is convenient and readily available. Too, the amount of media I have

Media, Poor, And Media
It 's an interesting world we live in when comedians such as Jon Stewart are more trusted to give truthful, adequate information rather than news outlets
and the media. What seems like a curious predicament is really nothing more than the creation of a monetized media, the value of a persons ' interest in
a headline. In Media, poor ethics and sensationalism caused by greed have led to unfortunate effects such as misinformation, idolization of celebrities,
and reduced credibility of news outlets as a whole. First and foremost, the largest and most unfortunate result of this sensationalism is misinformation to
the general public. The need for viewership causes media to exaggerate their stories, trying to create the biggest, boldest headline for it, and in the
process often citing inflated or even outright incorrect information. The rampant question; who can make the biggest, boldest headline in the shortest
amount of time? The drive to captivate and take the attention of the public in order to turn a profit is what drives this cash cow. Ultimately, in their
eyes, you are nothing more than a view to them. A number on a computer screen, that will transform into money. This leads to misinformation of often
important stories, which can create unfortunate side effects such as racial tension and misdirected anger. As the internet grows in popularity, the need
for news has only increased, now booming in the way of internet articles who are just as guilty of sensationalism. Click

Dangers And Long-Term Effects Of Tanning
Media Analysis 'Media' is the plural of the word 'medium', which often refers to different ways of communicating with other people; if the target is
a large number of people, then it is called 'mass media'. There are many types of media, such as TV, radio, films, newspaper, Internet etc. The main
purpose of media is to entertain; however they can also be used to persuade, inform, explain and advice. Media can be very powerful; therefore
people are influenced and affected by them. The two articles we have looked at for analysis have a common theme – both talks about the dangers and
long–term effects of tanning. The first article is from The Big Issues and the second is from Derby Evening...show more content...
The two texts have been written with different intentions and they both have specific target audiences. The first text, 'Sun Vampires' from The Big
Issue, has been written to inform the readers of the dangers and long–term effects of tanning. Other purposes include: to ridicule the 'tanorexics', to
advice people about the proper method of tanning and to warn those who are beginning to go on the sunbeds. The main target audience of this article
is the younger generations of the society who are more likely to get addicted to tanning on sunbeds. Nevertheless to some extent, the authorial intent is
to entertain and titillate leisurely readers who are looking for something to amuse the mind. In order to achieve the purpose and communicate the ideas
to the readership, the writer uses vernacular language such as 'fork out', 'one hell of a habit' and 'let's face it', and modern names, e.g. Peter Andre and
Bros – these techniques appeal greatly to the young people and therefore convey the message more effectively. The writer also grabs the attention of
casual readers by using a light–hearted tone– as a result of this, the reader wouldn't be too shocked or frightened, thus willing to buy another copy of
the magazine in the future. The second text, 'Face the fact – the sun is a real danger', from Derby Evening Telegraph (DET), have similar purposes to

Media has such a strong effect on our lives that we do not even notice its presence sometimes. Media is the central force in shaping our culture and
democracy. Media reflects and sustains the values and traditions of our striving, but necessary democracy. We as a society can use mass media to our

In the United States, 54 percent of children have a television set in their bedrooms. About 87 percent of U.S. households have a VCR, and about $10
billion is spent annually on video rentals, double the amount spent at movie theaters (Mediascope 1996).
Even if away from a TV set, Americans are not often far from electronic broadcast influences. Radio, an old medium, is enjoying a new popularity and
use. Radio sounds accompany Americans on the jogging trail, on buses, trains, or planes, and while they sit in cars commuting or trapped in traffic
jams. Many stations that used to broadcast music now send out national or regional talk shows, broadcasting the opinions of the hosts or the audience.
Shows discuss everything: medical advice, social advice, car repair, legal matters, and, of course, viewpoints on politics. People seem to enjoy having
"a say." But there is seldom a check on the authenticity or accuracy of what is said. Talk radio shows tripled between 1989 and 1994, and some of
those shows are credited with contributing to a kind of populist negativism toward government and authority.
Although television is the most pervasive, all forms of electronic communication exert influence on the social–political–economic thinking of users and
are affecting behavior. The Internet has changed the speed and

The Role of Media in the Society Essay
The Role of Media in the Society
Media has always played a huge role in our society. For a long time media was one of the methods of controlling people and leisure. In ancient
times when there was no newspapers and television, people used literature as source of information, some books like "the Iliad", and different
stories about great kings, shows those people the information about them. Nowadays media is one of the main part of our lives and our society,
because we use word media, to combine all sources of information. Average man is spending 4 hours a day on watching TV and reading newspapers.

There are two types of newspapers – Broadsheets and Tabloids. Broadsheet newspapers are targeted at those who like more realistic approaches to
news. Their articles focus more on including political and foreign items. However their publication is less popular than the tabloids. Tabloid
newspapers are aimed at people who are just expecting amusement from newspaper. Although they do cover some news, they tend to contain more
gossip, personality issues, shorter articles and more pictures than text. Moreover they often refuse and neglect the idea of publishing political and
foreign news. Also the newspapers are mostly bias in their view on what happened. For example in our country 90 percent of newspapers are
belong to government or to some rich people who still depends on government, so most of them are writing those things that are good for
government. As for me I like broadsheets more because there are only useful facts and no silly stories and pictures. In such country like Kazakhstan
where, like I said before most of the media are controlling by the government, we need to spend our time and to read a lot of different newspapers so
we can get full information from different points of view, I like newspapers which are belong to opposition parties.

The Importance Of Media In The Media
Media is everywhere around the world, it surrounds us even when sometimes we don't even notice it. It can appear from newspapers to news, or as
well physically and throughout electronic devices such as cell phones. We consider it as a tool to make time fly ahead or to spectate what is going
on with other people's lives. However, we may encounter certain factors that may not appeal to us. We may see postings or news about tragic events
that happen around the world and surprisingly, sometimes we don't even bother to care, due to the fact that it wasn't us in that situation. There are a
great number of aspects to be resolved for this world to be free from issues, but a question that comes to mind is, "What if it never...show more content...
An example that can relate to this song is when 9/11 happened, due to terrorists. An unexpected tragic event that no one thought would happen that
took many lives from loved ones to close ones. In addition, Billie Joe Armstrong's pathos has an outstanding true meaning based from the lyrics,
"A new day dawning, comes without warning...". One can interpret based on this factor that every day is a new opportunity for something tragic
to happen. This here is the message that Billie Joe Armstrong is trying to convey to us all. He wants us to realize that all though we live happy at
times, there is always something dark waiting to approach at any time with unpredictable outcome. A second example based on this observation
can be the terror attack that happened recently on Friday when a bombing occurred in a London train underground that injured 30 passengers on
board. And furthermore, a second man was arrested a couple days later due to the fact that he too was also affiliated with the incident as well
according to officers. In addition to the topic, Billie Joe Armstrong states about love and peace and how it's impossible for such thing like that to
occur," What good is love and peace on earth? When it's exclusive?", as if he were trying to say that it would have to take a miracle for the world to
resolve from this. Many people have experienced moments when others are made fun of or times when people fight for various reasons such as an
argument.

Last Tuesday, I attempted to unplug myself from the world of media and see how it affected my everyday life. After trying to disconnect myself from
everything that involves media, I realized how much I rely on it to get me through each day. I was never this aware of its presence in today's society
until disconnecting myself. Without media to rely on, I found myself having to readjust my whole normal routine just to get through the day.

Firstly, I noticed how much media speeds up our everyday lives. Essentially everyone is multitasking; it is a way of life in our society. I noticed
multitasking at its finest when I went to the library later that day. People are researching online, writing papers, Facebook stalking, instant messaging

Media Standard
Today's society is centered on media rather it be broadcasting media, print media, mass media, or social media. Media is the center of it all. The
media is our way of staying up to date on the latest news, passing and receiving information, basically keeping our lives in motion. The media has the
ability to create social norms. One social norm that rubbed writer/director of the documentary "Miss Representation" Jennifer Seibel Newsom the
wrong way was the misrepresentation of women in the media. The main claim or argument behind "Miss Representation" is that woman now days are
being judged only on their appearance rather then their knowledge, achievement, and or power.

Meaning ten hours a day the media is influencing teenagers. The media has created its own standard of beauty, so when teenage girls spend ten hours
a day focusing on media they see that a vast majority of them don't live up to media's standard of beauty.
Newsom points this out because in the documentary you see three different clips of three half naked, beautiful women lying down, washing a
window and serving a male food at the breakfast table.(INSERT CITATION) Newsome suggest those clips right there leads to girls being very
insecure about their looks and bodies which leads to losing confidence in their ability because they believe their value is solely based on their looks.
To capture the attention of the younger audience, Newsom interviewed teenage girls. One girl talks about the fact that when she was in fifth grade
she was worried about her weight. Now in ninth grade she says she is still worried about her weight.(INSERT CITATION) Here, Newsom suggested
she being concerned about her weight at such a young age is the influence of media. Another girl says "it's all about the body, not about the brain

The documentaries argument then targets the medias effect on women in power, specifically women in politics. One example of how media has
affected women in power is shown in a clip with former governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin. The clips is Palin being interviewed live on fox news, Palin is
asked, "Breast implants, did you have

Media's Role in the Globalization Process
Essay: "The role of media in globalization process"
If we talk about the role of media in globalization process we should firstly say that what the media is. The media is media technologies that are
intended to reach a large audience by mass communication. Today the media play a key role in enhancing globalization. And the media also play
important role in facilitating culture exchange flows of information between countries. The media spreads through international news broadcasts, new
technologies, television programming, film and music. There are a lot of broadcasts of media. Foe example: We can say aboutinternet, TV, radio,
newspapers, books, billboards and etc. The media connects the world to a network of information easily accessible for all of us. In this discussion
arises a question: Which role has media in globalization process? I think the role of media in globalization process is very important. And my point of
view is that the media is a part of the globalization process, it is like "pen" of the globalization process, because media shares everything that the
globalization process dictates. The important role in globalization process has Internet, which connects all the countries around the world. Internet is
called "world wide web". So if we say about the globalization process we should remind that the developed countries globalize enough. However, there
are some countries which do not globalize enough. For example, states of 3rd world, hungry states and others.

Media, Television, And Media
The world we live in today is continually changing and has changed tremendously through out the years. Not only since the public relations began to
be used, but the past fifteen years there has been a huge change and increase with the use of technology and media. Media is defined as "the means of
communication as radio and television, newspapers, and magazines, that reach or influence people widely" (Media, n.d.). Not only is media used in
public relations, but it is used in the daily lives of a majority of the world's population. There are two types of media , traditional media and new
media. Traditional media involves "television, newspaper, radio and magazine ads" (Christian, 2014) New media is recognized mainly with the use
of social media. "Ultimately, new media refers to content that is easily accessible via many different forms of digital media" (Christian, 2014). Social
media is one aspect of media that is becoming more and more popular, especially with younger generations that have grown up around Internet and
high–tech technology. According to a study done by the Pew Research Center, as of 2015, 84% of adults in America use the Internet; while in 2000
this number was only 52% (Perrin & Duggan, 2015). Of this number the highest age range of internet users is 18–29 year olds at 96% and the lowest
percentage age group is 65 and older at 58% which has increased about 4 times a much as the numbers from the 2000 survey (Perrin & Duggan, 2015).

An average reader loves a good scandal, especially something to do with anyone in the public eye regularly, for instance: royalty, popstars,
footballers and film stars. What society wants to read about is their private life and just how they live, and this puts pressure on the media to travel
further to gather stories. An increase in the "paparazzi" has led to a great deal of pressure being put on the rich and famous, with every detail of
their private life being examined, all for the sake of a story that will satisfy society. On the other hand, it cannot be doubted that media influences
people's attitudes and outlooks by conveying a variety of information which is acquired from newspapers, books, television, films, recorded music,
magazines, showing how wide and dense the structure of today's media is. 'Recreational' media such as newspapers and television have great bearing
on society. Not because the media control popular opinion, but because this media is the source of information on which the public feel qualified to
pass moral judgement and decisions. Television is a big business, with incredible influence. It is probably the single most important device in the last

The 'media' as a whole plays a major part in one's life. Media messages can be presented in many ways from reading newspapers to watching news

There are various issues that can be looked at to conclude whether or not there is such thing as free, unbiased media, to define this topic it is too

Taking this into consideration the media industries must release products for their customers to buy in order for them to make a profit. This is known
as commercial bias for the reason that the customers of the news media are advertisers. The meaning of 'good' to media sources is observed as the
number of readers and viewers attention they can draw.
The sources of bias can be from editors, journalists, speakers and corporation groups. When journalists or any other news source decide to publish a
particular story it needs to be taken into account whether or not they will benefit from the story or will it be a failure to them. Ajournalist will attempt to
be neutral by taking two points into thought, the first being: fairness to those individuals involved within the news / story being released and the
second is a professional process of collecting data / information that obtains fairness, completeness and accurateness.
When detecting bias in a press release or story a number of issues can be raised from the reader's point of view resulting in questions relating to the
authors socio–political position and which group they belong to, does the speaker have something or another to gain personally for actually releasing

considered injurious and appalling, whereas other times it normal. The messages that are taken from the media are based off of one's own faith and
knowledge, in accordance to the reinforcement theory (Jetter, 2017). The reinforcement theory argues that you can change someone's perspective or
behavior by using reinforcement, punishment and extinction. Punishments are used to avoid the behavior you do, rewards are used to support the
behavior you want and lastly extinction represents stopping an individual from acting upon a learned behavior.
Although terrorism cannot be defined in one specific definition, it can be depicted as the use of violence against innocent individuals to bring political
change through the means of fear . Majority of the time, terrorist attacks are often not directly intended for an exact individual, rather, are done to
convey a memorandum (Altheide, 2007). This can potentially signify that the media paying a large amount of attention to terrorist organizations, may
further encourage them to continue their violence. The correlation between terrorist and the media is symbiotic as terrorist organizations terrorize in
order to seek publicity for the sole

  • 1. Media Assignment Week 7 DeVry University Part I: Review the Skill Development Experience 1. Do the popular media approve of certain types of relationships and not others? The media approves of many types of relationships. The media shows a close relationship with one another and other types as well. Interpersonal relationships are important to everyone and it looks like it is the top motivation for social media communication. Para social relationships are when audience members recognize themselves to have media personalities. Popular media approves of the six stages of relationships, which are: contact, involvement, intimacy, repair, deterioration and dissolution. It also approves the types of relationship: friendship, love, family,...show more content... Protective families are stress agreement, avoids problem with little communication. Pluralistic family is very supportive with each other and encourages different attitudes and point of views. * 3. What do the media say about the rules for relationships? Rules for relationships helps identify the successful from the destructive relationship behaviors. It also helps to identify if there is something wrong in the relationship and how it can be worked out. The rules of relationship help to maintain and develop a good relationship. 4. How do the media deal with the dark side of interpersonal relationships, such as relationship violence and spousal abuse? Media deals with the dark side of interpersonal relationship by offering help online or on tv or anywhere. There is advertisement that gives out phone numbers and names of people that can help with their problems. There are media sites that offer many things to help a relationship repair the problems going on. Part II: Conflicting Styles The best conflict style that describes me is the accommodating style. The accommodating style is when 'I lose, you win' takes place. I feel that I think about others first than myself. I don't like to argue so I rather keep the peace. I am more concern about others needs than what is happening to me. Instead of arguing with others, I rather agree with them and keep them happy. But lately, I have realized that I Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Effect of Media and Mass Communication Essay The media is a powerful presence within the lives of others. It can be described as the main channel of mass communication. Media is often used to deliver a message to a large audience who are diverse. It can be written, broadcast or spoken. Media is a significant force within modern culture. Culture can be defined as the norms and values of a society. In our culture, the communications media hold an influential place in disseminating information, forming attitudes, and motivating behaviour. Technological advances are increasing the role of the media and its capacity to shape public opinion. Our society depends on the news media to provide information to help us form opinions and make voting decisions. It is clear the media has a huge...show more content... It was cheaper and made large scale distribution possible. These technology advances allowed the medium to enter popular culture and enhancing its influence within society [McLuhan, 1962]. By the nineteen twenties, mass media became known not only for print media, but radio and television also. Television provided both information and entertainment which became very popular. It was considered easier than actively reading. In recent times, mass media has taken on a different form; the internet. It is now the most popular form of mass media. Not only has the internet become a sensation but mobile phones, blogs and podcasts have all become the new forms of mass media within our modern culture. The media is easily accessed and waiting for us at the touch of a button. As a result, our culture is enormously influenced by the media. In this essay I will be discussing the media and deviance and the effects it has on our culture. One theory that was formed during this investigation was the cumulative effects model [Elisabeth Noelle–Neumann, 1974]. This complex theory looks at the potential affects media has on an individual with an active media consumption. This theory focuses on the agenda setting function in which the media acts upon. The media cannot force an individual to think a certain way. However it does have the power to control what the individual thinks about. If an issue is frequently in the media, the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Essay on Crime and the Media Crime and the Media The public depends on the news media for its understanding of crime. Reportedly three quarters (76%) of the public say, they form their opinions about crime from what they see or read in the news (Dorfman & Schiraldi, 2001). After reviewing five hours of reality crime television shows, one is left with a very dismal look on society and a prejudice towards minorities as they are largely depicted as the perpetrators of crime. This new genre commonly referred to as reality television appears to be sweeping the nation by storm. Opinions vary, depending on whom you ask, to what extent reality plays a role versus the selling of a product. Sensationalism, advertising, ratings hype, profiling and fear all comprise the mass...show more content... The apprehension and subsequent arrest all dramatized for the cameras. The suspect, heard on camera being questioned about his past domestic violence charges, his inability to pay child support and finally he is asked about the observed drug purchase. Of the nineteen cases reviewed, drug related crimes were more prevalent. In cases involving African American suspects, the drug of choice was crack cocaine. In suspects that were Caucasian, the drug of choice was methamphetamines. On the episode aired on May 5, 2005, COPS: Bad Girls, the suspect, a Caucasian woman was selling drugs and prostituting (Langley, 2005). With the cameras rolling, the audience is able to overhear, that the suspect is on welfare and has had her children taken away because of her drug habit. The suspect denies the charges, and the officer insists on making the point that she is using her welfare money in order to purchase drugs. In the cases reviewed, the program did not divulge the age. Upon observation, the average estimated age is twenty–five. Age did not appear to have any particular correlation to the type of criminal activity. What appeared to be more in play was the socioeconomic scale of the suspects. The average age and circumstances seem to strike a familiar vein with the cases reviewed. On average, the suspects were unemployed, residing with a family member, a history of violence and drug use. This Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Media Literacy in the Classroom Essay Media Literacy in the Classroom Works Cited Missing Media literacy is defined as "the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and communicate messages in a variety of forms" (Know TV). In more practical terms, media literacy means questioning the media and interpreting its many messages accordingly. Students are exposed to mass quantities of media on a daily basis. They watch television and movies, read books, newspapers, and magazines, listen to music, and in more recent years explore the Internet. This extreme exposure to media outlets leads to the need for education about the media. Media literacy is one way to help educate students about issues in which they are already actively engaged. Media literacy should be implemented into...show more content... Too often, people do not question or challenge the views media presents to us and simply accept the views at face value. Politicians rely on this during campaign elections. The popularity of negative advertisements depreciating opposition parties has grown tremendously over the years because they are often successful. The public embraces the negative media messages, then votes accordingly. Oftentimes, people do not even know they have been acted–upon by the media. Media literate people do not have quite as much trouble interpreting similar messages, for they are aware of the pervasive nature of the media. Media literacy courses allow people to hone their critical thinking skills and make informed decisions. These people are able to distinguish between fact and fiction, or at least recognize the differentiation between the two. They are able to examine the messages supplied to them by the media and in turn come to more knowledgeable decisions concerning politics and culture in society. They are able to see that the media simply represent the political arena from one viewpoint and that there may be more to the story then first it seems. The information learned through media literacy can also be applied to the second argument that focuses upon the influence media exercises on our values and behaviors. Media is probably the most powerful influence on teen attitudes and beliefs in American society. The abundance of media exposure contributes Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Essay on media and its influence on the public The media is a huge form of communication and source of information in the United States; on one side of the dispute are the beliefs that the media is too opinionated. On the other side are the beliefs that the media is just a simple informer that just reports the facts. The main issue for both of these beliefs is: does the media affect opinions on the issues from opinionated reports, or does it just report the facts that public may already know? If one could answer this question then they would know if the media was responsible or not for writing history. The media is a form of communication used to reach the general public to form audiences for information, artistic expression, and other kinds of messages...show more content... The production of media continued on from the eighteenth century through the nineteenth century and now producing numerous forms of media that are still used today. (MLA) Confidence in the media especially the news media has been sinking. Recent polls held by the Pole Research Center shows that eight months after the 9/11 event public confidence plummeted below normal rating levels. The public is irritated by the media's unwillingness to admit its mistakes. And, nearly sixty percent of those polled think that the media is biased. It is also known that a few months after the 9/11 event media is back to its old habits such as analysis, opinion and speculation, and that are largely based on anonymous sources. Of course the public prefers information that is not interpreted or hyped. For example the media's favorable treatment of Bill Clinton and his efforts to re–write the history of his administration has pushed confidence levels to a low. By allowing and promoting Bill Clinton and his effort gives the media a hyped since of favoritism that is obvious to the public view. The public's confidence levels have gone so low that the public believes almost nothing Bill Clinton has to say which disrupts the media and its credibility. The military often manipulates mainstream media because it recognizes the values of media and information control very well. It is known Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Persuasive Essay On The Media My previous experience with this topic of media always trying to persuade you, well I do have never really thought about it like that. I have read the book, The Hunger Games, and seen the movie. I have never put any thought in how the media persuades them and controls their society. For me, the book and movie were very entertaining. Action packed and attention grabbing, you never wanted to look away or put the book down because you never knew what was going to happen next. For the next 2 hours, or however long it takes you to finish the book, you put yourself in the shoes of someone else's life. The main point of this article is how the media is always trying to persuade you. Even when you think you are just being informed, whoever is informing you has an opinion of that topic. That person's opinion of the subject has to do with feelings and "feelings are often times much more powerful than fact" (Page 2). Knowing that feelings are more powerful than fact, the media tries to inject fear. The reason behind injecting fear is to persuade you to think what they think. We might leave in a country full of freedom's, but "we still manage to be molded by a medium that we have no control over" (Page 3). We learn about what is going on in the world by what we see in the mass media. We are not over in Iran, we only know what is being told to us. We could have a different view from what the media tells us, if we saw it in person and knew what they were going through. The media just gives us enough information to be persuaded to what they want us to think. I think the point is worth making, have people start thinking more in depth about what they are being told. Have them thinking about what are they leaving out and why. My reaction to this article is mind–blowing. I think she did a great job proving her point. Every time she made another point, it got me thinking and seeing what she was saying. When she talked about how "it is just a movie... but it is also manipulation" really struck me and made me think. While watching movies, sometimes we laugh or sometimes we cry, but have you ever really thought about it. The producer plays sad music to arouse a sad feeling, the main point of that is to show that they can manipulate Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Media Literacy Media literacy helps us understand our own habits and deal with the constant media around us. To increase my own media literacy, I estimated how much time I spent using media, and later tracked how much time was spent using media. This data opened my eyes to the amount of media I exposed myself to daily and helped me determine whether media positively or negatively affects my everyday life. Tracking my media usage, taught me about my own habits. For instance, my initial estimations underestimated my actual recorded times. To my surprise, I spend around one hour and forty minutes a day on my laptop doing school work rather than the assumed one hour a day. Plus, I mistakenly believed that I did not use my computer for any entertainment purposes. After tracking my time, I realize I spend at least an hour on Netflix a day. Also, I failed to include my non–digital media, textbooks, on the estimation sheet. Rather than not putting anytime into books, I spend around two hours a day reading text. This data helped me examine that media is not always digital, but is displayed through other mediums. The second largest section of my time was spent on social media at an alarming time of one and a half hours daily. From these records, I concluded that media negatively effects my everyday life. Digital media is a distraction for school work and studying since seeking a distraction online is convenient and readily available. Too, the amount of media I have consumed challenges my...show more content... Through interpreting and understanding my own media habits, I have reached the critical appreciation stage of media literacy. • 8. Media, Poor, And Media It 's an interesting world we live in when comedians such as Jon Stewart are more trusted to give truthful, adequate information rather than news outlets and the media. What seems like a curious predicament is really nothing more than the creation of a monetized media, the value of a persons ' interest in a headline. In Media, poor ethics and sensationalism caused by greed have led to unfortunate effects such as misinformation, idolization of celebrities, and reduced credibility of news outlets as a whole. First and foremost, the largest and most unfortunate result of this sensationalism is misinformation to the general public. The need for viewership causes media to exaggerate their stories, trying to create the biggest, boldest headline for it, and in the process often citing inflated or even outright incorrect information. The rampant question; who can make the biggest, boldest headline in the shortest amount of time? The drive to captivate and take the attention of the public in order to turn a profit is what drives this cash cow. Ultimately, in their eyes, you are nothing more than a view to them. A number on a computer screen, that will transform into money. This leads to misinformation of often important stories, which can create unfortunate side effects such as racial tension and misdirected anger. As the internet grows in popularity, the need for news has only increased, now booming in the way of internet articles who are just as guilty of sensationalism. • 9. Dangers And Long-Term Effects Of Tanning Media Analysis 'Media' is the plural of the word 'medium', which often refers to different ways of communicating with other people; if the target is a large number of people, then it is called 'mass media'. There are many types of media, such as TV, radio, films, newspaper, Internet etc. The main purpose of media is to entertain; however they can also be used to persuade, inform, explain and advice. Media can be very powerful; therefore people are influenced and affected by them. The two articles we have looked at for analysis have a common theme – both talks about the dangers and long–term effects of tanning. The first article is from The Big Issues and the second is from Derby Evening...show more content... The two texts have been written with different intentions and they both have specific target audiences. The first text, 'Sun Vampires' from The Big Issue, has been written to inform the readers of the dangers and long–term effects of tanning. Other purposes include: to ridicule the 'tanorexics', to advice people about the proper method of tanning and to warn those who are beginning to go on the sunbeds. The main target audience of this article is the younger generations of the society who are more likely to get addicted to tanning on sunbeds. Nevertheless to some extent, the authorial intent is to entertain and titillate leisurely readers who are looking for something to amuse the mind. In order to achieve the purpose and communicate the ideas to the readership, the writer uses vernacular language such as 'fork out', 'one hell of a habit' and 'let's face it', and modern names, e.g. Peter Andre and Bros – these techniques appeal greatly to the young people and therefore convey the message more effectively. The writer also grabs the attention of casual readers by using a light–hearted tone– as a result of this, the reader wouldn't be too shocked or frightened, thus willing to buy another copy of the magazine in the future. The second text, 'Face the fact – the sun is a real danger', from Derby Evening Telegraph (DET), have similar purposes to the 'Sun Vampires': to Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Media has such a strong effect on our lives that we do not even notice its presence sometimes. Media is the central force in shaping our culture and democracy. Media reflects and sustains the values and traditions of our striving, but necessary democracy. We as a society can use mass media to our advantage if we watch over the impact it has over us (Media and Culture 35) Let me first give some insight on how media bombards our life everyday. In our society, television is the main source of news and...show more content... In the United States, 54 percent of children have a television set in their bedrooms. About 87 percent of U.S. households have a VCR, and about $10 billion is spent annually on video rentals, double the amount spent at movie theaters (Mediascope 1996). Even if away from a TV set, Americans are not often far from electronic broadcast influences. Radio, an old medium, is enjoying a new popularity and use. Radio sounds accompany Americans on the jogging trail, on buses, trains, or planes, and while they sit in cars commuting or trapped in traffic jams. Many stations that used to broadcast music now send out national or regional talk shows, broadcasting the opinions of the hosts or the audience. Shows discuss everything: medical advice, social advice, car repair, legal matters, and, of course, viewpoints on politics. People seem to enjoy having "a say." But there is seldom a check on the authenticity or accuracy of what is said. Talk radio shows tripled between 1989 and 1994, and some of those shows are credited with contributing to a kind of populist negativism toward government and authority. Although television is the most pervasive, all forms of electronic communication exert influence on the social–political–economic thinking of users and are affecting behavior. • 11. The Role of Media in the Society Essay The Role of Media in the Society Media has always played a huge role in our society. For a long time media was one of the methods of controlling people and leisure. In ancient times when there was no newspapers and television, people used literature as source of information, some books like "the Iliad", and different stories about great kings, shows those people the information about them. Nowadays media is one of the main part of our lives and our society, because we use word media, to combine all sources of information. Broadsheet newspapers are targeted at those who like more realistic approaches to news. Their articles focus more on including political and foreign items. However their publication is less popular than the tabloids. Tabloid newspapers are aimed at people who are just expecting amusement from newspaper. Although they do cover some news, they tend to contain more gossip, personality issues, shorter articles and more pictures than text. Moreover they often refuse and neglect the idea of publishing political and foreign news. Also the newspapers are mostly bias in their view on what happened. For example in our country 90 percent of newspapers are belong to government or to some rich people who still depends on government, so most of them are writing those things that are good for government. As for me I like broadsheets more because there are only useful facts and no silly stories and pictures. In such country like Kazakhstan where, like I said before most of the media are controlling by the government, we need to spend our time and to read a lot of different newspapers so we can get full information from different points of view, I like newspapers which are belong to opposition parties. It can appear from newspapers to news, or as well physically and throughout electronic devices such as cell phones. We consider it as a tool to make time fly ahead or to spectate what is going on with other people's lives. However, we may encounter certain factors that may not appeal to us. We may see postings or news about tragic events that happen around the world and surprisingly, sometimes we don't even bother to care, due to the fact that it wasn't us in that situation. In addition, Billie Joe Armstrong's pathos has an outstanding true meaning based from the lyrics, "A new day dawning, comes without warning...". One can interpret based on this factor that every day is a new opportunity for something tragic to happen. This here is the message that Billie Joe Armstrong is trying to convey to us all. He wants us to realize that all though we live happy at times, there is always something dark waiting to approach at any time with unpredictable outcome. A second example based on this observation can be the terror attack that happened recently on Friday when a bombing occurred in a London train underground that injured 30 passengers on board. And furthermore, a second man was arrested a couple days later due to the fact that he too was also affiliated with the incident as well according to officers. In addition to the topic, Billie Joe Armstrong states about love and peace and how it's impossible for such thing like that to occur," What good is love and peace on earth? When it's exclusive?", as if he were trying to say that it would have to take a miracle for the world to resolve from this. Many people have experienced moments when others are made fun of or times when people fight for various reasons such as an argument. Get more content on HelpWriting.net

After trying to disconnect myself from everything that involves media, I realized how much I rely on it to get me through each day. I was never this aware of its presence in today's society until disconnecting myself. Without media to rely on, I found myself having to readjust my whole normal routine just to get through the day. At the start of the day I found myself stressed, unorganized and uneasy. I use my cell phone as an alarm and by turning it off the night before I found myself waking up every few hours for fear of over sleeping. Therefore, I had to rely on my friend/teammate, Emily to tell me updates and important information. At one point I could tell she was getting annoyed with me, having to update me regularly. She even told me she subconsciously sent me a text message because she was used to the constant communication throughout the day. Disconnecting myself completely from media provided me with a new opinion and outlook on its powerful role in my own life and in the world. Firstly, I noticed how much media speeds up our everyday lives. Essentially everyone is multitasking; it is a way of life in our society. I noticed multitasking at its finest when I went to the library later that day. People are researching online, writing papers, Facebook stalking, instant messaging and listening to their iPods all instantaneously. The instant access to everything has formed our culture. I find myself running on autopilot when it comes to using media. It took the full 24 hour fast for me to realize how dependent I really am on media to make it though the day. The stress I was feeling without the security of my phone or ability to communicate whenever I wanted to left me feeling helpless. The media is our way of staying up to date on the latest news, passing and receiving information, basically keeping our lives in motion. The media has the ability to create social norms. One social norm that rubbed writer/director of the documentary "Miss Representation" Jennifer Seibel Newsom the wrong way was the misrepresentation of women in the media. The media has created its own standard of beauty, so when teenage girls spend ten hours a day focusing on media they see that a vast majority of them don't live up to media's standard of beauty. Newsom points this out because in the documentary you see three different clips of three half naked, beautiful women lying down, washing a window and serving a male food at the breakfast table.(INSERT CITATION) Newsome suggest those clips right there leads to girls being very insecure about their looks and bodies which leads to losing confidence in their ability because they believe their value is solely based on their looks. To capture the attention of the younger audience, Newsom interviewed teenage girls. One girl talks about the fact that when she was in fifth grade she was worried about her weight. Now in ninth grade she says she is still worried about her weight.(INSERT CITATION) Here, Newsom suggested she being concerned about her weight at such a young age is the influence of media. The media is media technologies that are intended to reach a large audience by mass communication. Today the media play a key role in enhancing globalization. And the media also play important role in facilitating culture exchange flows of information between countries. The media spreads through international news broadcasts, new technologies, television programming, film and music. There are a lot of broadcasts of media. And my point of view is that the media is a part of the globalization process, it is like "pen" of the globalization process, because media shares everything that the globalization process dictates. The important role in globalization process has Internet, which connects all the countries around the world. Internet is called "world wide web". • 16. Media, Television, And Media The world we live in today is continually changing and has changed tremendously through out the years. Not only since the public relations began to be used, but the past fifteen years there has been a huge change and increase with the use of technology and media. Media is defined as "the means of communication as radio and television, newspapers, and magazines, that reach or influence people widely" (Media, n.d.). Not only is media used in public relations, but it is used in the daily lives of a majority of the world's population. There are two types of media , traditional media and new media. Traditional media involves "television, newspaper, radio and magazine ads" (Christian, 2014) New media is recognized mainly with the use of social media. "Ultimately, new media refers to content that is easily accessible via many different forms of digital media" (Christian, 2014). Social media is one aspect of media that is becoming more and more popular, especially with younger generations that have grown up around Internet and high–tech technology. According to a study done by the Pew Research Center, as of 2015, 84% of adults in America use the Internet; while in 2000 this number was only 52% (Perrin & Duggan, 2015). Of this number the highest age range of internet users is 18–29 year olds at 96% and the lowest percentage age group is 65 and older at 58% which has increased about 4 times a much as the numbers from the 2000 survey (Perrin & Duggan, 2015). In a modern world, dependent on continuous communication this is a very important question. If the world were not dependent on communication over large distances, schooling on a mass basis would not be possible or necessary. Most knowledge in traditional cultures was local knowledge, (Geertz 1983) traditions that were passed on through a local community, a very slow and long drawn out process. An average reader loves a good scandal, especially something to do with anyone in the public eye regularly, for instance: royalty, popstars, footballers and film stars. What society wants to read about is their private life and just how they live, and this puts pressure on the media to travel further to gather stories. An increase in the "paparazzi" has led to a great deal of pressure being put on the rich and famous, with every detail of their private life being examined, all for the sake of a story that will satisfy society. On the other hand, it cannot be doubted that media influences people's attitudes and outlooks by conveying a variety of information which is acquired from newspapers, books, television, films, recorded music, magazines, showing how wide and dense the structure of today's media is. 'Recreational' media such as newspapers and television have great bearing on society. Not because the media control popular opinion, but because this media is the source of information on which the public feel qualified to pass moral judgement and decisions. Television is a big business, with incredible influence. It is probably the single most important device in the last thirty years of media. Media messages can be presented in many ways from reading newspapers to watching news on television from the comfort of your own home. However, the most important factors are how the news is retrieved and portrayed by an individual or a group of individuals as each individual has the right to accept what they believe not what they are manipulated to believe or to accept. There are various issues that can be looked at to conclude whether or not there is such thing as free, unbiased media, to define this topic it is too broad to study itself so it will be broken down and researched in small parts. When journalists or any other news source decide to publish a particular story it needs to be taken into account whether or not they will benefit from the story or will it be a failure to them. • 19. Media And Media The mass media is an important factor when it comes to getting a message across to the public. No specific community can do without media as it is a crucial element to society. The media helps provide individuals things that they need the most, that being information. Sometimes this information is considered injurious and appalling, whereas other times it normal. The messages that are taken from the media are based off of one's own faith and knowledge, in accordance to the reinforcement theory (Jetter, 2017). The reinforcement theory argues that you can change someone's perspective or behavior by using reinforcement, punishment and extinction. Punishments are used to avoid the behavior you do, rewards are used to support the behavior you want and lastly extinction represents stopping an individual from acting upon a learned behavior. Although terrorism cannot be defined in one specific definition, it can be depicted as the use of violence against innocent individuals to bring political change through the means of fear . Majority of the time, terrorist attacks are often not directly intended for an exact individual, rather, are done to convey a memorandum (Altheide, 2007). This can potentially signify that the media paying a large amount of attention to terrorist organizations, may further encourage them to continue their violence.
