Collecting the Digital: From a Photographic Perspective, January 2016
1. A three (or more!) year project,
started in May 2015
Kajsa Hartig, Nordiska museet, Elisabeth Boogh, Stockholms
länsmuseum, Bente Jensen, Aalborg Stadsarkiv, Anni Wallenius,
The Finnish Museum of Photography
LFF Vinterkursus 21. januar i Odense
7. 1. memory,
narrative and
identity
2. creating and
maintaining
relationships
3. self-
representation
4. self-expression.
Personal photography today is primarily pursued for four
overlapping reasons:
8. ” Snapchat isn’t about
capturing the traditional
Kodak moment. It’s about
communicating with the full
range of human emotion –
not just what appears to be
pretty or perfect.”

11. Photography isn’t anymore about a single image or
photographic object. It is part of a chain of
registered data.
The digital photography of our time is momentary,
and therefore there is a high risk it never gets to
museum and archives collections.
Another risk is lack of metadata. Few
photographers, whether professional or amateur,
supply their imagefiles with searchable keywords.
14. To describe and map the
role of the photograph
collections, current
methods and workflows in
museums and archives
today,
15. To describe and map the role
of social media and social
digital photographs in society
– how it affects collecting
and disseminating of
digitally born photographs.
16. To describe and map and the
role of the collecting
heritage organisations (as
compared to other
organisations/companies
collecting and disseminating
photographs) and how users
perceive archives/museums.
17. Trough research and pilot
projects define evolving
methods for collecting and
disseminating
contemporary social digital
photographs, in museums
and archives.
18.
19. Nordiska museet
• Drygt 6 000 000 fotografier
i samlingarna
• Under nästan 20 år värd för
Fotosekretariatet
• Nationella fotograf-
registret
• Regelbundna foto-
utställningar
23. Strategies for collection:
• Collect in realtime
• Cooperate with photographers
• Use up to date technology
• Collect in quantity as well as quality
• Explore new motifs and way’s of using
photography
• Give advice to the photographers
• Cooperate with researchers

24. The main differences between analogue and digital photo:
• Why people photograph.
• How it’s used and…
• …how it is disseminated.
25.
26.
27. The Finnish Museum of Photography is
national special museum for photography,
its task being to promote and foster Finnish
photographic art and culture.
28. Collections policy: ”to collect good,
representative examples of all
photographic cultures” → instead
of thematic or regional focus, our
interest in photography lies in
collecting and exhibiting different
genres of photography, different
uses of photography and
phenomena related to
photography
29.
30. ”The Internet has fundamentally
changed photography. Never in
history have people created so many
photographs to such vast and
immediate audiences as today.
Never before has the individual
snapshot taken by ordinary men and
women had such global political
impacts. Photographs have become
integral in all forms of our
communication. Today, sharing
pictures is as important as creating
them.”

31. ”Although technological changes,
such as digitalization, the Internet,
smart phones, and metadata have
changed the concept of
photography, the needs and desires
behind taking photos have
remained surprisingly similar. We
still use photographs to enhance our
memories, to construct our
identities, to find love, and to stay in
touch with those close to us.”
