Unit four assignment sheet / english 102 / shearer
1. Unit Four:
Multi-Media Project
“I don't know where I'm going from here, but I promise it won't be boring.”
― David Bowie
1. PROJECT
In Unit Four, you will take your research on a problem of place, space, or environment
(from Units Two & Three) and translate it into a creative visual or written project.
This assignment should use the research you have already done and present in a new medium or
genre. The project is open to many interpretations, and can take on the form of any of the below:
- Podcast
- Cartoon strip
- Short video
- Photography series
- Art project (painting, illustration, etc.)
- Infographic
- Interview (video, audio, or print)
- Op-Ed
- Satirical article
- Letter to the Editor
- NOT a PowerPoint
- Any other ideas you might have (and run by me)
This means you will have a new audience to consider: one that you hope to inform, persuade, or
entertain (or all three). And you will have to also consider how the audience might access, view,
or interact with this project.
2. RHETORICAL ANALYSIS
With your project, you will submit a short 300-500 word rhetorical analysis that explains the
choices you have made. How are you framing your project appropriately for the intended
audience, purpose, medium, genre, modality, and circulation?
3. PRESENTATION
You will be also presenting your project to the class in short (~5 minute) sessions at the end of
the semester. During this presentation, you should describe the process of switching medium
and/or genre and the rhetorical decisions you have made along the way.
2. Requirements:
• A finished creative piece that considers the research you’ve done in Units 2 & 3 and
translates it into a new genre or medium.
• A rhetorical analysis of your project that describes the choices you have made around
genre, medium, audience, purpose, modality, and circulation.
• A presentation to the class showing your project and discussing your rhetorical decisions.
Audience:
• Your audience will depend on the conventions of the genre (which will be different for
everyone) and should be fully considered in your rhetorical analysis and presentation.
Format:
• Specific to your project
Grading:
• This project is clearly related to the topic of your Unit 2 & 3 project of place or space and
uses research pertinent to that topic.
• This project is creative and rhetorically effective, considering how you might inform,
persuade, or entertain the audience.
• The 300-500 word rhetorical analysis considers the conventions of the genre, the
audience you hope to reach, as well as how and where your project might be seen and
circulated.
• The presentation introduces your project in a well-prepared, professional manner and
expresses the rhetorical choices you have made.
