3. The Backdrop
• Improving safety by widening the carriageway provision and applying
motorway standards throughout.
• Construction commenced in 2014 and completion is scheduled in
2017 with a value of £ 380m on an ECI D & B model.
• 20km of new Motorway
• 18km of Local Access Road
• Approx. 70,000 vehicles per day
• 600,000 tonne of road surface ~ 1,500 jumbo jets
• 3 million cubic metres of earth moved ~ 1,100 Olympic
swimming pools
• 113km of drainage ~ Newcastle to Ripon
• Completed Scheme will help to save 20
lives and prevent more than 450
accidents over the next 60 years.
