2. DANIEL GOLEMAN
It is only the human brain that was gifted with the
capacity to process on an intellectual level the emotions
being experienced, validating the reality of the danger,
controlling the emotions being experienced, and acting
accordingly given several options to choose from.
3. DANIEL GOLEMAN
Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter
More Than IQ (1995)
“all emotions are, in essence, impulses to
act, the instant plan for handling life that
evolution has instilled in us.”
4. DR. JOSEPH LEDOUX (1992)
Amygdala – center of action
• Emotional sentinel that can take control of our
actions even before the neocortex could assess what
to do
• Keeps a memory bank of previous experiences
related to emotions
Neocortex– thinking brain
8. PETER SALOVEY
A psychologist in Yale University
First introduced the concept of Emotional
Intelligence and showed how intelligence can be brought
to our emotions
Later on joined by John Mayer, another psychologist
from the University of Hampshire
9. EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE
Goleman: The ability to motivate oneself and
persist in the face of frustrations, to control impulse
and delay gratification, to regulate one’s moods and
keep distress from swamping the ability to think, to
empathize, and to hope
10. 5 DOMAINS OF EI
(SALOVEY & MAYER)
1. Knowing one’s emotions or self-awareness
2. Managing emotions
3. Motivating oneself
4. Recognizing emotions in others
5. Handling relationships
11. 5 DOMAINS OF EI
(SALOVEY & MAYER)
1. Knowing one’s emotions or self-awareness
• Self-awareness develops self-reflection
• A person recognizes an emotion being
felt and able to verbalize it by saying “I
am angry” at experience of rage
12. 5 DOMAINS OF EI
(SALOVEY & MAYER)
1. Knowing one’s emotions or self-awareness
• Mayer: “when one recognizes this
emotion, there is also desire to get rid
of it or get out of that situation.”
• This is a sign that neocortex is gaining
some control over the amygdala
13. 5 DOMAINS OF EI
(SALOVEY & MAYER)
2. Managing emotions
• Goleman: “we often have very little or no
control when an emotion occurs and what this
emotion ill be, but we can control on how long
an emotion will last.”
• It is important to recognize an emotion and
experience it, but dwelling on it, particularly if
it’s negative, is not healthy.
14. 5 DOMAINS OF EI
(SALOVEY & MAYER)
2. Managing emotions
• Anger – triggered by something that
endangers a person’s life or status, or even
one’s balance
- A symbolic threat to one’s dignity and
self-esteem
15. 5 DOMAINS OF EI
(SALOVEY & MAYER)
2. Managing emotions
• Anger
- Managing anger:
a. Stop for a split second to assess the situation and
manage one’s thoughts
b. Cool down by removing yourself from the
situation or doing something physical like walking,
taking a deep breath or punching a pillow
c. Avoid hurting yourself
16. 5 DOMAINS OF EI
(SALOVEY & MAYER)
3. Motivating oneself
• Hope – major indicator of emotional intelligence
- the element present when one is fighting some
overwhelming anxiety, a defeatist attitude, or
depression
• Optimism – a great motivator and helps people to
expect that things will turn out better or right,
when faced with adversity.
17. 5 DOMAINS OF EI
(SALOVEY & MAYER)
4. Recognizing emotions in others
• Empathy – capacity to recognize the emotions in
other people
- Goleman: “root cause of our capacity to
empathize is self-awareness
- Important in maintaining relationships as it taps
the caring capacity of people
18. 5 DOMAINS OF EI
(SALOVEY & MAYER)
4. Recognizing emotions in others
• Attunement – need for empathy is linked to the need for
others to recognize and receive their emotions and
respond to them
• Golden rule: “do unto others what you want others do
unto you” may be traced to empathy
• People who can empathize and read non-verbal messages
of emotions are more adjusted emotionally, more
popular, more outgoing, and more sensitive (Goleman, 1995).
19. 5 DOMAINS OF EI
(SALOVEY & MAYER)

23. WITH A SMILE
Verse I.
Lift your head, baby, don't be scared
Of the things that could go wrong along the way
You'll get by with a smile
You can't win at everything but you can try.
Bridge 1
Baby, you don't have to worry
'Coz there ain't no need to hurry
No one ever said that there's an easy way
When they're closing all their doors
And they don't want you anymore
This sounds funny but I'll say it anyway.
Verse 2. Girl I'll stay through the bad times
Even if I have to fetch you everyday
We'll get by with a smile
You can never be too happy in this life.
Bridge 2.
In a world where everybody
Hates a happy ending story
It's a wonder love can make the world go round
But don't let it bring you down
And turn your face into a frown
You'll get along with a little prayer and a song.
(Too doo doo...) Let me hear you sing it
Repeat Bridge 1
Verse 3.
Lift your head, baby, don't be scared
Of the things that could go wrong along the way
You'll get by with a smile
Now it's time to kiss away those tears goodbye
(Too doo doo...) Let me hear you sing it
