Target Audience
Name of Production: Upon Thames
Target Audience: 18-25 year olds, predominantly femalehoweverwillappealto both.
I think that my trailer will appeal to this domination of people as the codes and
conventions I am going to use will be ones, which are typical to the stereotypical
soap opera genre. By this I mean that due to the planning and research I have done,
I have noticed that soaps are watched by a higher percentage of females to male. To
‘repeat’ (Steve Neale) then I would use some of the repeated aspects I see in soaps.
I have looked into two soaps in particular; ‘Eastenders’and ‘Hollyoaks’. My reasons
for this are that the audience they appeal would be of the 7 subjectivities (Hartley) I
am aiming to appeal to;
The gender and class I am targeting is going to be lower to working class
young to middle age adults so the actors and actresses in my trailer will be made to
look and act like someone of this class by their costumes/dialectand mannerisms.
For example, the actors and actresses in the scene will be wearing blue collar work
attire, casual clothing or even football tops, clothing which you would see people
wearing in the outskirts of London, not tailored clothing but more so jeans, jackets,
trainers etc. Females will come across as ‘housewives’ and males will come across
as ‘working men’.
Ethnicity and race wise, I aim to target a more of a wide range of people. In
the sense that the societywe live in in Londoncan be very diverse and openand
respectfulof every type of personwhether it’s their skin colour to sexuality. So, the
people in the scenes will be of a mixture of differentraces and religions and ethnic
group. For example, a Muslim family or a group of white British friends in a scene.
Continuing on, the scenes in the trailer will also include a ‘female gaze’ (Diana Saco)
which will be a good looking male who will be there for the female audiences
pleasure but also something for the male audience to aim towards. For example the
‘Roscho Brothers’ in Hollyoaks are an attractive family who have had scenes in the
past topless or using a punch bag, which a majority of the time the female audience
want to see and will enjoy. There will also be a scene, which shows ‘misandry’ as
there will be a conflicting scene with a male and female showing how they have a
disliking to a male. Also, this will show strength in this woman as she is standing up
to herself. This ‘strong woman’ (RebeccaFeasey)is seen a lot in soaps as for
example there are strong women such as ‘Peggy’(Eastenders),‘Liz’ (Corrie) and
‘Marlena McQueen’ (Hollyoaks).
I hope that my trailer will create a ‘personal relationship’ for my female viewership in
the sense that they can relate to the actresses in the scene. For example,if in the
trailer I include a hardworking housewife they maybe able to relate to that and
2. understand the characters thoughts and feelings and also want the best for this
actress as to them they are alike. Also, similarly I want my audience to be ‘caregivers’
(Maslow) so when they see the actress they relate to feelpain or have an issue in
their life then they can feelempathy towards them and will want them to end with a
‘new equilibrium’ (Todorov).
